A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION YOU CAN KEEP

You can actually keep any New Year’s resolution you make. You really can! The proviso is that it has to be inspired by God. Something you know that God wants you to do, here and now. If he wants you to do it, by that fact you know that it will be possible. “For nothing will be impossible for God” (Luke 1:37). God will never ask you to do something which you cannot do. He will never ask you to fly to the moon or to swim across the ocean. He will not ask you to feed all the hungry of the world or to end the scourge of war. There are things that God will ask – some big, some small, some difficult, some easier – and he will ask with confidence, because he knows that with his help you can do it. Years ago, I would have told you that I could never become Catholic. But then one day I found my-self saying, while sitting in my car outside of the office where I worked, “I have to become Catholic.” This was a big step for a WASP* like me, with strong evangelical leanings. But once I knew that it was God ask-ing me to do it, I never looked back. By my own willful choice I could never have made such a change, but God gave me the conviction and the grace to carry through. The same was true of the call to the priesthood, which came to me even before I was received into the Church. They were two big decisions that required great changes in my life that I could never have handled by myself. God may not be asking you to make a dramatic change such as he did of me thirty-one years ago, but my point is that, whatever change he asks for, be it radical or not, YOU CAN DO IT! God is not like an MLB manager asking you to pitch nine innings of perfect baseball, or an executive mandating an impossible sales quota, or a parent demanding straight-As, or an opera director expecting you to sing like Pavarotti. People can provide advice and encouragement, but they cannot grace you with the power to do what they want you to do. God, however, can and does. This is why it is important to find out what God might want you to do. Is there a New Year’s resolu-tion he wants you to make? The making of this resolution should be of his inspiration if there is to be any hope of keeping it. If you are like most people, there are a lot of things which you would like to improve or change about yourself. But if you want success, the immediate question to ask is, what is the one thing now that God wants me to change? He knows I am human and therefore does not expect me to take on ten is-sues at once. But there may be one thing he wants me to tackle. Discovering this one thing will lead to suc-cess, for the Finger of God, the Holy Spirit, is touching this spot. In this place he is offering actual grace.

It takes courage to recognize where God is asking for change. It also takes patience, for we are weak, and most likely there will be some failures or missteps. Perseverance and even repentance are sometimes required. Maybe a needed change in strategy or an adjustment in approach. A spiritual director or confessor can be helpful in this. But a person who knows what God has called him or her to take on will not lose confidence, since they know that with his call comes grace. “God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength” (1 Corinthians 10:13). “For I am confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

So how do I know what resolution, if any, that God wants me to make? Spiritual discernment begins by commending oneself to God and then searching one’s heart. Where is God touching it? Where is it weighed down? What does it need to experience more freedom? What inspires it? Does my heart feel a holy excitement when I think of doing this or that? “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the de-sires of your heart” (Psalm 37). *WASP = White Anglo-Saxon Protestant

The Baptism of the Lord - Sunday, January 10, 2021

ORDER of WORSHIP

GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

FIRST READING IS 55:1-11 Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread, your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David. As I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of nations, so shall you summon a nation you knew not, and nations that knew you not shall run to you, because of the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified you. Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked man his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts. For just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.

GOSPEL MK 1:7-11

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

SECOND READING 1 Jn 5:1-9

Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one who testifies, and the Spirit is truth. So there are three that testify, the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son.

Prayer to Saint Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Parish Appeal Update

The 2021 Parish Appeal is off to a good start thanks to you. In the first ten weeks of the campaign we have commitments from two hundred twenty-one families for more than $84,661 with $58,528 received. The first $125,000 will go toward parish expenses; the remainder will go toward the emergency fund for unbudgeted, ma-jor expenses for the church; e.g., the ulti-mate replacement of the church roof.

Ways to Donate to Offertory and Parish Appeal

The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity to the par-ish. There are multiple ways to donate to the Offertory and Parish Appeal:

Place your Offertory and/or Parish Ap-peal envelope in the collection basket

Mail the Offertory and/or Parish Appeal envelope to the Parish Office

Text 610-810-5080 from your smart phone or click on this link: https://membership.faithdirect.net/PA832.

For the 2021 fiscal year our budgeted Offertory income goal is $740,000. This is less than what we need to balance the overall parish budget. We plan to make up that deficit from the Annual Parish Appeal. This week about seventy-seven percent of our regular weekly donors contributed. As a result, our Offertory income through January 3 was $191 more than the budgeted Offertory income. Please keep up your good work until all our weekly donors return to Mass.

Rest in Peace

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the

faithful departed rest in peace.

Sunday: The Baptism of the Lord Wednesday: St. Hilary, Bishop and Doctor of the Church Next Sunday: 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

We carry a greater depth of self-confidence and chance of succeeding when we have affirmation, a sense of direction and clear purpose in life. Each of these serve to provide our lives with meaning, allowing us to clearly establish priorities and goals. They also are necessary for integrity, which is the conviction and single mindedness that keeps us grounded in the truth of who we are. “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Jesus’ baptism provides him with exactly what he needs to get about the business of his mission as the Son of God. He is given what he needs to be successful in fulfilling the purpose for which he was sent. Our baptisms give us these same gifts. We re-ceive the affirmation we need from God, knowing that we are one of his beloved daughters and sons. We are gifted with the direction and clear purpose we need in order to be productive stewards and faithful Christians. Are we ready and willing to answer the call?
