MESSIAH MESSENGER - AUGUST 2016 PAGE 1
Dear Friends of the risen, living Messiah,
GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT MLC in August! Here is a sampling:

SUNDAY AUGUST 7: The Baptisms of three children at the 8:30 service, Sunday School Rally Day for children to meet teachers and classmates beginning at 9:45 in the Sanctuary, Reception of New Members at the 11:00 service, The Great Hot Dog Festival at Noon to celebrate the New Members and Sunday School Rally Day.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 14: Baptism at 11:00 service and Germany Trip presentation by Sr. Youth at 9:45 and 12:15 in the Parish Hall. The Sr. Youth will serve a typical German breakfast including lunch meat at the 9:45 presentation and a full German Lunch at the 12:15 presentation (these are not fundrais-ers; no cost. Just come and enjoy!). The Sr. Youth wish to express their thanks for the support of MLC and friends which enabled their “odyssey.” They will be sharing pictures and stories of their experiences in Germany. Please come to hear and to encourage our Youth.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 21: Blessing and Sending of LWR Kits and Quilts at 8:30 and 11:00 services. Did you know that, of the 161 congregations in the ELCA SE Synod, MLC sends the most pounds of gifts to Lutheran World Relief? That is something to celebrate! A Town Hall Meeting will take place in the Parish Hall at 9:45. Everyone is invited to this open forum with the Church Council. The Council will briefly share recent Council actions and plans. Most of the time will be open for members and friends to share thoughts and ask questions. And…
PEEKING AHEAD to SEPTEMBER:
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11: An all-congregation big event with the theme The Greatest Story Ever Told - and you are in it! One aspect of observing September 11 is honoring service. How is MLC serving by reaching out and caring for each other in our community and beyond? Come and see! A Celebration of Ministries and Missions presentation will follow each service of worship in the Parish Hall. After late service, this will include an every member Congregation Dinner.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18: Warning! Those brave enough to attend worship will suffer through The Annual Fishing Sermon. Yet, despite this last notice…
GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT MLC! "O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him!" The Psalmist invites us to come together to receive the gifts of our Lord. Then we get to go out to share God's gifts with the lives we touch.
Thanks be to God!
Pastor Scott Peterson
O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.
The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned. -from Psalm 34

A child’s concerns should be about having fun and learning, not worrying about where his or her next meal will come from.
Unfortunately, too many children at our local schools are hungry, and their families have no way to feed them. Schools have lunch programs that provide needy children a lunch every school day, but the child receives nothing during the weekend or for other meals. This is why one of Messiah’s lo-cal mission is the Weekend Food Program.
This program provides a bag of nonperishable food to needy school children every Friday to ensure they have something to eat during the weekend. Some of the food items included in the bags are drinks, oatmeal, a small box of cereal, a granola bar, a cup of soup, a can of ravioli, peanut butter crack-ers, cheese crackers, mandarin oranges, applesauce, mixed fruit, a dessert, popcorn, animal crackers, and mac and cheese.
Each month, groups at MLC sign up to pack the purchased food items into the sacks, which are then placed into plastic bins filled and delivered to the participating schools. Each Friday, registered stu-dents visit their counselor to receive their food bag. Messiah currently sponsors 15 students at Liberty Middle School and may possibly expand to feed children at another school.
For everyone interested in helping continue this program, a meeting will be held on Saturday, August 13, from 10-11 a.m. in classrooms 11 and 12. During the meeting, a list of food and personal care items needed will be compiled, packing dates will be scheduled, and volunteers will be assigned to shop and pack. At the meeting, participants will also discuss the possibility of expanding to reach a second school. If you are interested in volunteering, please attend the August 13 meeting to learn more and get involved.

Celebration of Ministry and Mission
THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD - and you are in it! September 11 …… mark your calendars.
Messiah’s Dinner Theater is Sept. 17th
Once again, member Terry Frakes is direct-
ing a new cast of thespians in a melodra-
matic presentation of “Money in the Bank…
or It’s All Your Vault” by M.K. O’Roark.
The play is the sad tale of a missing bank
owner, J. P. Moneylender, of the Last Terri-
torial Bank and Telegraph Company. He is
presumed dead. His sweet, young daughter
Marion and her step-mother Hilregard
Moneylender have taken over the running
of the bank, despite collection notices from
rival banker, dastardly Smedley Chetum and
his gal Selina Eyeful.
Tickets will go on sale early August with
details to follow on www.mlutheran.org

HYMN OF THE
MONTH:
The God of Abraham
Praise
“The God of Abraham
Praise” is perhaps the
most Jewish of all Chris-
tian hymns. Thomas
Olivers converted the
hymn from a Yigdal, a
doxology of thirteen
stanzas still sung in
Jewish synagogues
today. Its beginnings
go back to the 12th cen-
tury. In 1770, Olivers
heard an opera vocalist
sing the Yigdal,l. He
acquired the music and
began his work, includ-
ing all 13 stanzas in the
hymn and annotating it
with footnotes citing
Scripture references for
almost every line.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL RECAP
We had a great time during our Barnyard Roundup Vacation Bible
School! We had around 12 participants in our week-long VBS pro-
gram. The students rotated through stations and learned about God
being Our Shepherd in hands-on, farm-based activities. They shucked
corn, made arts and crafts, and learned all about life on a farm. This
program was fun and successful thanks to the hard work of many
volunteers. Thank you to Kay Spence, Claire Strand, Janell Zesing-
er, Reburta Spinas, Julia Naefe and Dorothy Seitz!
Messiah Mom’s Book Club is now …

Everyone is welcome to join us for a Hot Dog Buffet after the late service on August 7. How many different styles of dogs can you eat?

The Council met on July 14th with Council VP Mary Ann Stasiak presiding. If you wish to attend, Council meetings are open to all and you are welcome!
Highlights from the meeting include:
A huge thanks to Gabino and Janice Aldaco for their work in painting stripes in the park-ing lot! Thank you Aldacos!
For the past several months, the council has been looking into potential Word and Sacra-ment Missions to present to the congrega-tion. To this end, Pastor Scott met with Pas-tor Esther Ngomuo from the Kiswahili mission church in Nashville. They discussed how our congregations might develop a relationship . We are hopeful that Pastor Esther will be able to visit MLC in the near future (perhaps a Wednes-day Night Dinner) to share information about her mission church.
The Church Council is hosting a town hall meeting on Sunday August 21st between ser-vices. The council will provide a brief over-view of council activities followed by a time for questions, concerns, and ideas. We’d love to see you there!
The next council meeting is Thursday August 11th, 7:00
