MEDIA MINISTRY 7
Pastor’s Prattling
This month, Matthew 25:34-40 was on my mind as the Parish proved themselves righteous in so many ways. Lord, when did we do all this for you? This past month, the Parish and members of the Parish helped clothe, feed, and shelter those in need through offering of their resources. This amazing church gave money for rent, utili-ties, food, diapers, household items and more. People of the Parish stepped up and offered our church build-ing for two separate funeral meals to those who did not have local church homes. We also took up a collection for someone who lost a loved one and had to get a loan to cover funeral expenses. Further, we have new ministries starting that em-brace loving the “least of these” as we venture out in the Backpack Buddies Ministry and SET FREE. New faces joined us in the congregation and my heart warmed as I witnessed the congregation encircled them with love! As I talked in the kitchen with someone who thanked our church profusely for all we’d done, I said “That’s the good part of the church; they have the re-sources and are able to do so.” Then I continued, “But more importantly, they willingly give out of their love to those in need.” PRAISE GOD for who you are Jacksboro Parish and all you do for the church, one another, “the least of these” and the community. You are a blessing! It is my honor to be your pastor and I am humbled as I watch you live out your life in Christ! My love and devotion, Pastor Ana

Mission and Stewardship Focus on
Juliette Fowler Homes
For the month of September the Mission and Stewardship Committee has chosen to focus on
Juliette Fowler Homes in Dallas. It’s an amazing place with a 120-year history that has evolved
over time and is nestled in the heart of Dallas in the Lakewood area. It has always been affili-
ated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Juliette Fowler Homes has long been a place of respite for children, youth, and the elderly. Ju-
liette Peak Fowler had a dream that children and widows would have a home where they
would be cared for and nurtured for as long as needed, whether they could cover the cost of
their care or not. The services have changed as the needs of society have changed. In the
past 30-40 years the population needing retirement and nursing programs has greatly in-
creased, while the need for group homes for children has diminished.
The progression in care for children and youth has changed several times during these years.
To meet the changing needs of the young, JFH moved from having a children’s home to a resi-
dential treatment facility to today’s service to children and youth who need short or long-
term foster care. Cherish the Child is the foster care program of JFH and Presbyterian
Children’s Homes and Services. It serves the needs of children in north Texas who need
short or long-term placement and works with families who are interest in becoming foster
parents. All children placed live with a loving family. For more information on this program,
please go to http://www.fowlerhomes.org.
Fowler operates three residential programs which provide a home and special services for
more than 350 residents each day. Pearl Nordan Care Center provides for those resi-
dents who require
24-hour skilled and/or
long-term nursing care,
as well as rehabilitative
care.

Jackson Living Center, open since 2002, offers both independent living and assisted living
apartments on a private pay basis. Fowler Christian Apartments offer both independent
and assisted living apartments to the elderly who meet low to moderate income qualifications
or mobility impaired adults in need of a barrier-free environment. These are HUD Section 8
properties which have been so successful in serving this population that a third unit is about to
be built. For more information and pictures of these programs and facilities, please go to
http://www.fowlerhomes.org.
Our focus this month is to support the community of Fowler Christian Apartments, which
serves senior adults with limited incomes. The activities director for FCA provides many pro-
grams for residents. One such program is one in which each resident who attends an activity
or social event receives an “activity buck.” FCA hosts quarterly auctions where residents are
able to bid on the items with their activity bucks. These are really fun and spirited times which
have greatly increased the social interaction for this community. An estimated 200 auction
items are needed each year. Suggested items you might contribute include:
Pillows Portable radios Blenders
Microwave cooking utensils Wall Clocks Hanging door mirrors
Dish drying rack Blankets Small stools
Beverage containers Full, queen, or twin sheets Desk lamps
Toasters Flashlight Alarm clock/clock radio
Crock pots Cosmetic bag/totes
Would you believe that bingo is such a hot activity that an estimated 8,424 Bingo prizes are
needed each year? Here are some suggestions for contributions:
Cookie jars Storage containers Toilet paper
Ziplock bags Soft peppermints Floor lamps
Ladies’ and men’s watches Dish towels Liquid soap for hand and dishes
Coffee Mugs Photo albums Paper towels
Trash bags Fans Music boxes
Electric can openers Costume jewelry Home décor
Teas
Let’s fill the foyer with these items this month and be ready to share them with Sabrina Porter,
new president and CEO of Juliette Fowler Homes, who will be with us for morning worship on
Sunday, September 30.

SAVE THE DATE: SEPTEMBER 9th, 4 TO 7 P.M.
On Sunday evening, September 9th, the Christian education commit-
tee, would like to extend an invitation to everyone in the Parish to
join us at the Ft. Richardson lake side swimming beach. If you have
not been to this beach, it is located off the Bowie highway, Highway
59, to the right after you go across the lake. You will see a Ft. Rich-
ardson sign identifying the entrance. Everyone is invited to bring
their lawn chairs and towels. Swimming is, of course, available to an-
yone interested and time to relax and visit with friends is always a good way to spend an
evening. We will provide hotdogs, drinks and condiments for this event. Those attending can
provide chips side dishes or desserts.
The cost to get into the park is $3 per person for those 12 and over. Children under 12 get
in free. We want everyone to come. If the cost of admission is prohibitive for anyone,
we will gladly cover that expense.
We hope to see everyone there on the 9th. This will be our kick off for the beginning of a
new Church year!
See you then,
Karen Davenport

SET FREE Jacksboro Parish has a new ministry starting soon called SET FREE! This
ministry is a recovery program that will be modeled after Celebrate Recovery
(CR); which started at Rick Warren’s Church Saddleback in California.
It is our prayer that we can help people along their path of recovery from
any number of addictions, difficulties in life, and co-dependency. As CR states, we
are here to help those who struggle with a hurt, hang-up or habit.
One of the statements the DOC says is, “creating wholeness in a fragmented
world” and this ministry is the start of creating wholeness for those who struggle
with hurts, hang-ups and habits. CR also works to create leaders in the minis-
try…everyone can do something and so this ministry also encompasses what the
PC(USA) state, “equipping the saints for the work of ministry by building up the
body of Christ”. What a way to bring our two denominations together in minis-
try! SET FREE starts on October 8th at 630pm.
If you feel called to participate in this ministry as a leader, please talk with
Ana. If all goes well, those who are leaders will be going Sept 10th to see a small
CR group in Agnes and Sept 16th to see a large CR group in White Settlement.
The MDO garage sale was a success!
With the help of staff, friends and
church members we raised approxi-
mately $800.00. Thank you to all who
donated items or their time. We are
grateful for all you do.
MDO Xtreme will begin Tuesday,
September 4, 2012 at 9 AM. We
are looking forward to a new
year full of learning, fun activities
and most important Jesus.

Now that the first week of school is behind us it is time to get going with our 2012/2013 school year ministry! Our FIRST official back to school meeting will be Wednesday September 5th for Jr. High and High School from 6:30-8:30 (this will only be the meeting times for the first few weeks). During September the Parish will be cooking the youth group meals and during October FUMC with be hosting the meals. If you would like to sign up to cook a meal let T.J. know ASAP! Also, September 28
th and November 2
nd the
men of the Parish and FUMC will be cooking breakfast for the Jacksboro football boys. We need all the help we can get. We will be meeting at MCC at 6:00 a.m. to cook and serving at 7:00 a.m. at MCC! And one of the best parts about this time of the year is FOOTBALL, thanks be to GOD! For the past 4 years we have joined with FBC to serve around 120 students by providing safe actives for them after home football games, we call them Fifth
Quarters. We are looking for youth group parents and church members that can help with Fifth Quarters for the rest of the year.
Wow, we need a lot of HELP! Which is a good thing, because that means God is us-ing our church to work in the lives of young people in Jacksboro! How cool is that? If you can help with anything that we are doing call text, email, Facebook or come by the church and talk to T.J.!
Media Ministry
Are you gifted with computer work? Would you be in-
terested in sharing that gift with the Parish? Can you im-
agine having an impact in worship through your gifts, tal-
ents and the use of media? WE NEED YOU! Talk with Ana or
TJ and see how we can support a Media
Ministry!

Ten Things You Can Learn From the Apple Store, by Guy Kawasaki
Not long ago, I read this article and thought how insightful it was to us in our time of thinking about church. Though I won’t go over every word, I’d like to share the Top Ten list and if you’d like to read further, that article is in the office.
Stop selling stuff—instead of asking how do we increase membership, ask, “how do we enrich
people’s lives?” Enrich lives—miracles happen when we enrich lives and strengthen faith. Hire for smiles—statistics show people make up their mind about a church within 2 minutes and
the most important factor is if they feel welcome. We are not all gifted with hospitality, but those that are should be greeting and welcoming people.
Celebrate diversity—how welcoming can we be? Are we creating spaces where kids are welcome, their parents, those who create art on their body with tattoos and piercings?
Unleash your inner Genius—teach people something they didn’t know and let them offer their gifts to the ministry.
Empower employees—like a store, a manager must empower their employees to take care of things when they are not present. Yes, pastors are present to do a lot, but it takes all of us.
Sell the benefit—practice talking about what we love about this congregation. Many of us feel uncomfortable with “evangelism”, but we can talk about what we really enjoy and receive from our faith community.
Follow the steps of service—take hospitality seriously, welcome people and show them the ropes…we take for granted that everyone will know how to act, stand, sit at the right times. Ap-ple has an acronym:
A—Approach with warm greeting; P—Probe politely to understand their needs; P—Present solu-tions that help them now; L—Listen for unresolved questions; and E—End with a fond farewell and invitation to return.
Create multisensory experience—music, words, images, bread, wine…use all senses…smell, touch, taste, hear, and sight. Appeal to the buying brain—declutter—what are we doing that we don’t need to do. Ask, “Is
there a simpler way to do this?” Take time to think about how we can incorporate this list or discover how to truly reach God’s chil-dren in ways that are meaningful and transformative!
Holy Humor A minister’s child asks, “Mom, why do you bow your head before your sermon?” The minister responds, “Well, I’m asking God to help me give a good sermon and to touch lives.” The child thinks and then says, “Why doesn’t God answer your prayer?”
