Pastor’s Corner

Fairlington follows some rich traditions during Advent and Christmas including the Christmas Tree Sales, Advent Program for Families, Messiah Sing-Along, Party for All God’s Children and Christmas Eve Services. This year we will have one tradition with a new twist: the Christmas Pageant is scheduled for Sunday morning, Dec. 17 at 11 am. We also have some brand new things happening: a Service of Hope and Healing also on Dec. 17 but at 9:30 am, a Christmas Eve Morning Brunch and a Love Feast! The point is that Fairlington is making room for everyone this Advent and Christmas. There will be meaningful worship, Bible Study, outreach and fellowship. This is a time of year when our neighbors want to connect with tradition, but are looking for new ways to navigate a season filled with a variety of emotions. The best way to share these opportunities is a personal invitation. Identify one individual or family who you will invite to something highlighted in this newsletter. It may make all the difference to them. Peace, Pastor Mary Beth

Thanks for Your Participation in

Our NLI Weekend.

SteepleTalk is published too early to include the results of our November 28 Church Conference decision, but we will be getting the word out in other ways. A huge thank you to our church NLI team for all their hard work: Greg Poling, Tom Przystawik, Devon Earle and Anne Wilson.

State of the Church Report One of the highlights of our 2017 Annual Charge Conference was the State of the Church Report presented by Church Council Chairperson Anne Wilson. You may find it on our website or by contacting the church office. Thank you, Anne!

Service of Hope and Healing Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. ~ISAIAH 40:1-11

The Christmas season is filled with joy and anticipation, yet this sometimes does not resonate in our own experiences. If you are looking for comfort, wholeness, and renewal this Advent season, join us for a Service of Hope and Healing at 9:30am on December 10th. This contemplative service of prayer and music will offer a time to light candles, a sign of hope and light in the darkness, as well as to be anointed with oil, a sign of healing. Questions? Contact Pastor Devon, [email protected].

On Christmas Eve Morning Come celebrate Christ’s love on Sunday, Christmas Eve morning. We will gather at 9am in the Fellowship Hall for a Christmas Eve brunch. Then at 10am we will share in a Love Feast in the sanctuary. The Love Feast, or Agape Meal, recalls the meals Jesus shared with his disciples during his ministry and invites us to share in community and fellowship. We will share sweet buns and tea, a reminder of the sweetness of God’s love. We will pray, sing carols, and hear testimonies from people in our congregation. Come participate in this traditional Christmas Eve celebration. If you would like to make an egg casserole for the brunch or have questions, see Pastor Devon, [email protected].

Advent Bible Study The beautiful Christmas story that we know best includes a little baby, shepherds, Mary and Joseph and magi. Did you know that this story is a compilation of stories from three different gospels? In our Advent Bible Study, we will explore how Matthew, Luke and John each approach the birth of Jesus uniquely, and how Mark says nothing at all. Join us on Mondays at 7:30 on November 27, December 4 and December 11 at the home of Marian Houser, 4517 LaSalle St., Alexandria 22304 Sign up with [email protected].

R e f l e c t i ng o n S t e wa rd s hi p a nd G i v i ng BY JENNIFER AYERS

Every year my husband and I host an Open House and invite people we would like to see, know better, or haven’t seen in a while. It’s a frenzy and it’s hard to talk to anyone for longer than a minute, but we love it. Some people come every year bearing gifts, some come sporadically or don’t reply at all. Others come, promising to return the favor and never do. But it’s not about that. We just liked having a party and welcome each person with joy. It takes a lot to host an Open House each year—It takes thoughtful deliberate planning as well as regular maintenance. We need a budget, a plan, savings, we make lots of to-do lists, a menu, shopping list, recipes, decorations, dedicated time to cook, clean, move furniture arrange food... and prayers for the innocent person who opens a closet during this party- that’s where we put our clutter. Our church has several teams that keep it going but it takes every bit of our congregational energy to keep Fairlington’s doors open and welcoming. We need space to gather, worship led by intelligent, caring, and innovative clergy, incredible music, Sunday school for adults and children, buses to bring people to church who are unable to drive, outreach and calls to members who need a prayer and a database to keep track of it all, servers and software, and even someone to organize our service to the community. Pledges and gifts keep us going. We believe faithful stewardship of our talents and finances is a year-round priority. Your voice matters, and, in addition to your financial pledges and offerings, we welcome your ideas, and involvement. You can reach me at [email protected] or 571-218-2436.

Kingdom Christmas Market The time is Now for the Kingdom Christmas Market! You have an opportunity to make a positive impact with your Christmas shopping while celebrating the season. 2018: Improving Health Care for Women, Children &Youth The anticipation of the Christ child’s birth reminds us of the importance of maternal and child health. Cousins Mary and Elizabeth are two faithful, low-income mothers-to-be whose pregnancies would be considered high-risk in today’s society. Worldwide, maternal deaths continue to climb and women are dying from preventable causes at an alarming rate. Join us in 2018 for activities focusing on improving health care for women, children and youth in our communities.

How Our Church Works The FUMC Finance Committee Serving God through Effective Financial Management

BY STEPHEN NG

Six times a year members of the FUMC Finance Committee meet to perform the important ministry of nurturing the financial vitality at Fairlington. Led by Finance Chair Randy Nuckolls, the committee is responsible for funding the budget and managing the financial resources of the congregation. The committee is comprised of approximately 20 members from a wide cross-section of FUMC.

Meetings begin with an opening prayer, followed by review of the minutes and Treasurer Roma Sexson’s financial report. Committee members comb over the “numbers” on balance sheets and other documents, as trends are highlighted and details discussed openly.

Al Ross provides an update on the five counting teams which he oversees. These teams are charged with the important and sensitive responsibility of counting, recording, and properly depositing all church contributions, including the Sunday offering and other gifts. Al also reports on the new Enduring Gifts Team which helps our congregation learn about legacy giving. There wil l be a special event in the winter to increase awareness about channels of planned giving and about the Enduring Gifts fund.

Next, Stewardship Chair Jennifer Ayers provides an update. FUMC’s annual fall stewardship campaign is an important event for the entire congregation – it is our opportunity to be thankful for what God has given us by pledging our financial gifts. For the Finance Committee, this report also provides a vital tool for developing next year’s budget and ensuring sufficient income to meet our church program needs. Jennifer also reports on how stewardship is becoming a year- round focus.

Following the stewardship report, the trustee rep (Cindy Davis has been serving in this role) gives an update from the Board of Trustees. (See Nov. Steeple for detail about the Trustees). As property and asset stewards, the Trustees have the important role of receiving gifts made to the congregation, signing contracts for major church projects, and wisely spending your gifts to maintain our property.

Last, but not least, Staff Parish Relations Chair Tom Przystawik provides a report on church staffing and other personnel-related matters at FUMC that impact funding and spending.

After all report updates are provided, the meeting transitions to a discussion of any old or new business. Topics can range from making final decisions or approving next year’s budget, discussion on internal controls, audit results and recommendations, or any emerging issues that have potential financial implications. The meeting is adjourned after a closing prayer where we give thanks to God for continuing to bless this church and for guidance as we perform this important ministry for FUMC.

Building Committee News BY LEA FOSTER As we bid 2017 farewell and enter 2018, we find ourselves both reflective and anticipative. The same can be said for our efforts to shape a church building that is welcoming, nurturing and serves our community. We remember and are heartened by the legacy that past FUMC congregations established. We recall – not as happily – the resources that were diverted away from missions to patch our aging infrastructure this past year.

Together, we look ahead with eager eyes to what 2018 may hold for FUMC. Our architects at LeMay Erickson Willcox will present Master Plan options to the Church Council on December 18 at 7:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. While Church Council meetings are always public meetings, the architects will present the same Master Plan options in a church-wide meeting in January 9 at 7:30pm Please circle that date in red on your new 2018 calendar. Your voice is critical at this stage in our renovation planning. We will weigh the priorities determined previously by the congregation and shared with our architects: accessibility throughout the building; open, flexible space with a welcoming "front door;" as well as plans for our HVAC system.

Please prayerfully consider serving on a building subcommittee in the New Year. If you are interested in joining a team focused on fundraising and giving, spirituality and prayer and communications, contact Daphne Miller

Millions of Jan Karon fans will be thrilled that it’s life as usual in the wildly popular Mitford series. To Be Where You Are is the 14th novel about the beloved town of Mitford. It all began with Father Tim Kavanagh. After twelve years of wrestling with the conflicts of retirement, Father Tim realizes he doesn’t need a steady job to prove himself. Then he’s given one. Meanwhile, newlyweds Dooley and Lace Kavanagh, along with their adopted son Jack face life’s ups and downs. In this book Jan Karon weaves together the lives of two Kavanagh families and the characters that readers around the world love. Finding Winnie by Lindsay Mattick is the true story of the beloved Winnie the Pooh. In 1914, Harry Colebourn, a veterinarian on his way to tend horses in World War I, followed his heart and rescued a baby bear. He named her Winnie and he took the bear to war. Harry Colebourn’s real-life great-granddaughter tells the true story of a remarkable friendship and an even more remarkable journey -- from the fields of Canada, to a convoy across the ocean to an army base in England. . .and finally to the London Zoo, where Winnie made another new friend: a real boy named Christopher Robin. Little Banty Chicken and the Big Dream by Lynea Gillen is more than just a bedtime story. This enchanting book tells the tale of one little chicken that, with the support of her barnyard friends and the wise moon, has the courage to make her dream come true. The message of the story is uplifting and will encourage children to realize their dreams and talk about them with those they love. Included are bonus activities to inspire children to share and work together to realize their dreams.

The Season of Advent is a Time of Preparation. . . During this time, we prepare for and anticipate the coming of Christ. We remember the longing for a

Messiah and our own longing for, and need of forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning. As we look back

and celebrate the birth of Jesus, we can make our own preparations to do God’s will in the world and serve

others as Christ exemplified.

Fairlington United Methodist Church’s vision statement evokes “a nurturing faith community that serves

God by serving others.” The Church, through the Missions Committee, supports numerous organizations

that help us serve others, including

ALIVE (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically) Rebuilding Together Alexandria Just Neighbors Rising Hope Mission Church Rental Deposit Assistance Bridge to Independence

Carpenter's Shelter

Fairlington's work with these services is "over and above" our regular obligations as a congregation of the

United Methodist Church. Support comes in the form of monetary gifts and volunteer hours. Money to

support these missions comes from Special Offerings collected over the Lent and Advent seasons.

During Advent and Christmas, your special Advent/Christmas Offerings help us continue this service to

others in our own communities, to our Nation, and to our World. Please give and help us to serve others.

Designate “Advent Offering” on the memo line of checks or on your offering envelope. Our goal is to

raise $15,000 during the four weeks leading up to Christmas

Everyone was interested in a monthly after church lunch at a restaurant or someone's house, so we are gathering for brunch after the 11am worship service on December 17

th at

Jackie and Richard Wozniak’s home (326 Helmuth Lane, Alexandria, VA). If you are in your 20s and 30s join us for food and gingerbread house making and decorating. Children are welcome! If you have any questions or would like to carpool from the church, contact Pastor Devon, [email protected].
