Deals with morphologic characteristics of diseases.According to morphologic features pathologists classifyand define diagnostic units (diseases).Other methods and features are used to classify thediseases today: microbiology, immunohistology,molecular genetics. . . ).The ultimate goal of classifications is to definediagnostics units according to reliable criteria. Thisclassifications must correlate with clinical features of thedisease (prognosis, reaction to therapy. . . ).

Autopsy of the organs is usually performed by standardmethod. Parts of dissected organs are opened in thesame way, which enables to compare the findings.Specimens of tissues are taken for microscopicexamination and other specimens are taken formicrobiology and other methods.
