"Before I came to HIC I was studying IT in Sri Lanka, but decided to change to Automotive Engineering. The University of Hertfordshire was ideal because of its strong links with the automotive industry.

The lecturers and staff are friendly and the small class sizes mean that I get plenty of individual attention. I really look forward to my classes."

Pathways to the University of Hertfordshire

HIC is an Associate College of the University of Hertfordshire, offering students a modern and dynamic educational experience. We are committed to providing educational pathways and support services in an environment that encourages you to achieve excellence in your studies.

Undergraduate pathwaysAn undergraduate pathway is a single course comprising four stages of study. When you successfully complete the pathway you will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hertfordshire.

Depending on your chosen pathway, you can begin your studies in September, January or May.

University Foundation

University Foundation is Stage 1 of the undergraduate pathway. The transition from high school to university is a big step, perhaps the most important in your life. HIC’s university foundation is carefully designed with this in mind. The staff at HIC will provide you with ongoing guidance and support, as well as the knowledge and skills support you need to succeed in your future university studies.

First Year Degree

First Year Degree is Stage 2 of the undergraduate pathway. During this stage you will experience the equivalent of the first-year curriculum of the University of Hertfordshire Bachelor’s degree, but with smaller class sizes and extra academic

contact hours. Computer Science, Science and Engineering, Creative Arts, Life Sciences and Mass Communications students will join the first-year degree classes with the University of Hertfordshire students, with extra tutorial support from HIC. Law students will move from the University Foundation at HIC directly into the degree course at the University of Hertfordshire. The teaching and learning experience will enable you to fully develop your knowledge and understanding of each module to prepare you for the remaining stages of your pathway.

Second Year Degree

Stage 3 of the undergraduate pathway is the second year of your degree, which is taught at the University of Hertfordshire.

Final Year Degree

Stage 4 of the undergraduate pathway is the third (final) year of your degree, which is taught at the University of Hertfordshire.

Postgraduate pathwayA postgraduate pathway is a single programme comprising two stages of study. When you successfully complete this pathway you will be awarded a Masters degree from the University of Hertfordshire.

You can start your postgraduate pathway in January, June or October.

Pre-Masters

The Pre-Masters is stage 1 of the postgraduate pathway and takes either one or two semesters. It has been designed to prepare international students who have not qualified for direct entry to the University of Hertfordshire’s Masters degrees, in the schools of Business, Creative Arts and Life Sciences.

Undertaking a Pre-Masters will give you time to adjust to the rigorous research and independent study requirements of a UK postgraduate degree. This will ensure you get the most out of your Masters studies at the University of Hertfordshire.

Masters

Your Masters degree is stage 2 of the postgraduate pathway, and is taught at the University of Hertfordshire.

Intensive English LanguageIntensive English Language is a full-time programme specifically designed for international students who need to improve their English proficiency before starting their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

The programme, which HIC offers at the University of Hertfordshire’s College Lane campus, is designed for students with differing levels of English competence.

You can start Intensive English Language in October, February or June.

Hatfield: a great place to live and learn

The University of Hertfordshire is located in Hatfield, just 20 minutes from London’s King’s Cross station and within easy access of the A1(M). Our two sites, College Lane and de Havilland, are situated less than a kilometre apart. A network of pathways, cycle routes and handy shuttle buses connect the two sites.

Old Hatfield retains many historic buildings, the most notable being Hatfield House. Elizabeth Tudor (later Queen Elizabeth I of England) was confined here for three years in what is now known as The Old Palace in Hatfield Park. The area is also recognised for its role in global aircraft manufacture due to the establishment of the de Havilland airfield and aircraft factory in Hatfield in 1930. During the next two decades de Havilland produced the world-famous Gypsy Moth and Tiger Moth biplanes, the Mosquito fighter bomber and the world’s first jet airliner, the Comet.

LondonYou will soon discover that it is not only your studies that offer you exciting challenges and experiences. Whether you want to visit museums, theatres or libraries; enjoy the city’s shopping, dining or nightlife; see world-famous historic attractions or simply sit and watch the fascinating array of people, London has it all in abundance. You can also easily hop on a train to France

from St Pancras station or take a flight to a more exotic destination from Luton airport, situated just 30 minutes away.

• are looking to fine tune skills already gained during undergraduate studies, employment or both

• are transferring to a new area of study.

The pathway will prepare you for future postgraduate studies by giving you confidence and expertise in areas relevant to your taught Masters degree. You will:

• learn numerical techniques, research methodologies and presentation and communication skills

• gain transferable skills that will help you in your academic studies and future career and enable you to make informed decisions

Assessment for most modules is continuous, and includes tests, assignments and presentations.

Masters(Stage2)

One year September and January (depending on your chosen degree)

During this stage you will build on what you have learnt during the Pre-Masters stage. You will also increase your professional understanding of your area of study. My HIC: Christine Johnny Kulai, Malaysia Business Administration

"The most impressive thing about

HIC is the small size of the

classes; everyone gets personal

attention from the lecturers.

I love the environment

because it is away from the

hectic city. I decided to study

business because I want to own

my own company in the future."
