Core Areas of Professional Development
The Pathways program is designed around three distinct areas of professional development – Business, Leadership & Technology. The program begins with a self executive competencies assessment, accompanied by 360-degree assessments.
Pathways participants identify their unique strengths and growth opportunities across nine executive competencies, as determined by Egon Zehnder International, a global executive recruiter and talent assessment firm. Self-assessment scoring consists of characteristics, behaviors and outcomes for each of the nine executive competencies and the 360-degree assessments reflect other people’s views, which fully round out the analysis.
The results of these assessments help direct participation across the three core areas of professional development focused on within the program: Business, Leadership & Technology.

Business Development
It is critical in today’s global competitive community that senior IT leaders develop the sensibility to become senior business leaders with proven strategic thinking skills.
The Pathways Leadership Development program is designed to prepare VPs, IT managers, directors and executives for the many challenges they will face as future CIOs. The CIO Executive Council recognizes the individual needs of each participant and provides subsequent offerings for advancing skills specifically in leadership development and career advancement. This aligns and follows the development as outlined in The Council’s Journey to the Future-State CIO®.
Participants have the opportunity to engage in one of three business development curriculum based on their own individual development needs.
CIO Group Mentoring
Pathways participants will be assigned to an experienced, business savvy CIO mentor and a small mentoring group consisting of 6-8 participants. Using the results of an individual’s assessments and application, we match the appropriate CIO mentor and participant peers to create a two-way learning environment. The engagement kicks off with a one-to-one orientation between the participant and their mentor. The group will meet virtually for six sessions over the course of six to eight months and will conclude their engagement with another individual CIO mentor/mentee call.
Through group mentoring participants will:
• Connect in highly interactive discussion forums
• Interact within small groups matched with one accomplished CIO
• Continually review professional challenges in a supportive environment
• Take advantage of the counsel of a seasoned CIO
• Discuss day-to-day challenges as well as longer term suggestions for improvement
• Have an opportunity to meet face-to-face at the Leadership event

It includes monthly classroom group calls with designated course instructors. Class size is limited to 10 participants. The resulting plan is a living document to utilize today, revisit tomorrow, and update as knowledge grows and new opportunities arise.
Career Development Plan will include:
• Improved readiness for the next leadership role
• Career building expansion of their own network of peers
• Head start on preparedness for new senior leadership positions
• Identification of low-hanging-fruit to tackle in first few months of a new job
• Ability to apply course acquired knowledge to current leadership role
Executive Coaching
This advanced component is delivered through a series of individual coaching sessions with an experienced CIO executive coach for a total of seven hours over the course of 12 months. Executive coach matching is based on the results of the participant’s self and 360°assessment along with their application. The sessions are scheduled directly between the participant and coach once formal introductions have been completed.
These sessions can include a combination of the following:
• Agreement on client’s area(s) for development

Leadership Development
Experienced IT leaders from within the CIO Executive Council lead seminars and webcasts enabling participants to capitalize on the CIOs personal expertise and knowledge. The seminar curriculum framework is based on the nine executive competencies and follows a highly interactive format providing Pathways participants the ability to learn from the direct experience of the seminar leader as well as their peers.
The universal executive competencies, as determined by Egon Zehnder International, a global executive recruiter and talent assessment firm, shown to have the greatest impact on an IT executive’s success are as follows:
n Results Orientation – Being focused on improvement of business results not just IT results. By making IT priorities the same as the business, IT can become a key driver to improving contribution levels and accomplishing the goals of the business.
n Market Knowledge – Understanding the market landscape in which a business operates, which includes the competition, the suppliers, the customer base and the regulatory environment.
n External Customer Focus – Serving and building strategic partnerships with external clients, vendors and customers. Understanding the advantages to managing these relationships in order to get measurable results, such as cost savings and improved service.
n Commercial Orientation – Identifying and moving towards business opportunities, such as seizing chances to increase profit and revenue.
n Strategic Orientation – The ability to think long-term and beyond one’s own area. It involves three key dimensions: business awareness, critical analysis and integration of information, and the ability to develop an action-oriented plan.
n People & Organizational Development – Developing the long-term capabilities of others and of the organization as a whole in order to achieve successful results, as well as influencing or even transforming someone’s life or career.
n Collaboration & Influence – Working effectively with and influencing those inside and outside of your functional area, and creating a positive impact on business performance.
n Change Leadership – Transforming and aligning an organization through its people to drive improvement in new and challenging directions. It is energizing a whole organization to want to change in the same direction.
n Team Leadership – Focusing, aligning and building effective groups both within one’s immediate organization and across functions.
