IRAS project ID 191177 DEPEND WS1 Information Sheet Patients/carers (Mental Health) Version 3b 25 th January 2017 Developing and Enhancing the Usefulness of Patient Experience and Narrative Data Chief Investigator: Dr Caroline Sanders, University of Manchester Patient/Carer Participant Information Sheet We would like to invite you to take part in a research study. Before you decide whether or not to take part, please read this information sheet which explains what this research is about, why it is being done and how it could involve you. What is the study about? Feedback about patients’ experience of NHS services is collected with the aim of improving the quality and safety of services. Often this information comes from postal surveys asking patients about previous experiences. Sometimes it is difficult for patients to remember details of experience, and staff often think the questions are too general and not relevant to all patients and carers. Patients often write detailed comments about their experiences on surveys, but these are not always used as staff cannot read through them all. Some services record patient stories to help staff improve services. However, there has been little research on the best ways to collect, analyse and present patient feedback data in order to improve services. The study asks: can we make data about patient experience of NHS services easier to collect, and more useful, by improving the way we analyse and present this information? The study aims to talk to patients to find out their views on collection of data on patient experience. Working with patients, we will design new and effective ways to collect data on patient experience, through writing, audio or video. We will talk to health staff and their managers about how they would want this data presented so they can best use it. This will help to create a new, more useful means of gathering feedback of patient experience and to introduce it in three different healthcare settings. We will then speak to patients and staff once again to assess their impressions of the changes that have been put in place. Who is doing the research? This project is being undertaken by the University of Manchester in collaboration with Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. It is funded by the Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR) Programme of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
