Appeal for help

Kunal Walia , aged 24 years ,is an Indian citizen. He came along with

his wife to Australia on a student visa in Nov 2008. He studied as well

as worked with IGA and Domino Pizza. His visa is upto Oct

2015.They were blessed with a son in Oct 2009.

In Oct 2010, he got a courier contract work with TNT Courier Compa-

ny. He met with an accident on 11 Oct 2011. Luckily he had taken in-

surance cover from Medibank before the accident. He has undergone

many surgeries in Royal Perth Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hos-

pital. Now he is admitted in Royal Perth rehabilitation hospital Shen-

ton Park Campus. His treatment expenses are being paid by Medibank.

His present medical status is as under:

1. His right arm is non-functional.

2. His vision is severely affected.

3. Due to infection a bone from his skull was removed. This being infect-

ed cannot be refitted. So a plate will have to be put, which can happen on-

ly when swelling has come down. This is likely to take about six months.

He will be discharged from the Hospital on 27 July 2012. On discharge

he has been promised issue of medicines for three months only by the

hospital. Since he is likely to be re-admitted after about 6 months for fit-

ting of plate, he will have to buy his medicines from his resources for at

least 3 months. The medicines are very expensive. He needs about

AUD15000 to buy medicines for 3 months. Medibank will not pay for

medicines when he is discharged from hospital .They will however start

paying again when he is readmitted for fitting of plate.

He used to live in rented accomodation. His mother, Meenakshi Ji

came from India to take care of him in Nov 2011 on 3 month visa. Her

visa was later extended upto 09 Aug 2012. She could not manage by

herself, so her younger son Karan joined her. He had come on a short

visa which was later, on recommendation from Hospital authorities ex-

tended upto 31Aug 2012. Meanwhile Kunal’s wife went back to India

with her son. So while Kunal was in hospital, his mother and younger

brother became homeless. They had to take shelter in Gurudwara Sa-

hib. Now they are staying with a kind family whose son is also under

treatment in the same hospital. Kunal’s father is a very poor man. It is

with great difficulty that he has been able to afford travel and boarding

/ lodging expenses of his wife and younger son for such a long time.

They cannot take him to India as fitting of the plate in India will cost

amount much beyond their capacity (Medibank will not pay for treat-

ment in India)

Requirement of help has to be on following lines:

1. Lodging and boarding for three for 6 to 8 months

2. A minimum of AUD15000 will be required after 3 months for medi-

cines

3. Some help to get visa of Meenakshi and Karan extended for one

year. This is going to be difficult as previous extensions were obtained

with great difficulty.

4. As these medicines have to be taken for whole life, no way can

Kunal’s parents afford it. I wonder if a way can be found to get perma-

nent residency to Kunal or work permit for karan.

This family is in dire need of help and in a big way.
