• Prior to 1870 most immigrants came from Northern & Western Europe

• After 1870 most immigrants came from Southern & Eastern Europe

• Most were unskilled and poor and moved to cities instead of farms

• Wrong way to answer:– They were people who came here from southern and eastern

Europe after 1870.• Best way to answer:

– The “new immigrants” coming to America were largely immigrants from southern and eastern Europe that began arriving in the United States after 1870. They mostly settled in cities and were often unskilled laborers. Many were Catholic or Jewish and spoke languages other than English. The countries they came from were: Italy, Greece, Poland, Hungary, and Russia.
