During my early employment I was eager to explore various avenues within a wide range of diverse roles, during my time at the Strathmore Hotel for example I was taken on as a basement porter and quickly proved to be a valued and trusted employee so that I quickly rose through the various levels to become Deputy Head Night Porter, I moved from this position because I was being offered a Managerial role and at this time I felt that would have been to restrictive when it came to future employment.

From there I moved to Vauxhall motors which was a lot more money and whilst here managed to arrange to gain experience in all aspects of line work, from assembly through to welding and spraying and finally onto the rectification line.

The lure of money led me to try Double Glazing sales, I did very well out of this but found that working so many unsociable hours and having no real career path was to restrictive so I then tried a totally new experience which was on the buses, I lived in Luton at this time and after a while of commuting to London switched to driving buses closer to home.

I met my first wife around this time who lived in Birmingham, so I arranged to join West Midlands Transport as a bus driver, unfortunately although it was agreed that I should join them they faced an issue which meant redundancies at that time, instead of signing onto the unemployment queue I bought a Taxi and ran it in the Tamworth area until a chance meeting with a tutor at Kalamazoo steered me in the direction of IT.

I studied at Kalamazoo and gained a placement with Kays in their family hampers department where I spent a lot of time supporting rather than creating systems, I was attending a recruitment fair with a colleague in early 1996 as he had no transport when I was approached by a TNT manager asking if I was applying for a position, I responded that I wasn’t but he said as I was there I might as well discover something about TNT. The offer was made that same night for me to join them so I did.

After a few years the support team that I helped to initiate was being outsourced to Eclipse group solutions and I was TUPED across as the resident expert in those systems and the rest as they say is history.

During this time I have had training in the following –

NVQ – COBOL , MSBASIC, UNIX

Video Courses – DB2, Easytrieve, SQL, JCL, PRO-IV, FileAid, IMS
