PAWSPrints Twice Blessed
We say we bring joy to the world – literally. We say that we share the love and companionship of our
pets with people in need – because they NEED that love and companionship. They need a boost, a friend,
a conversation, a puppy hug.
We have said all this from the beginning of PAWS for People and we continue saying it – and rightfully
so. It is still true – maybe even truer than ever.
What? How can that be truer than in 2005 or 2010? How can people be benefitting more from the simple
elegance of the interaction between a loving pet, a well-trained therapy human, and a person who needs a
little help?
Two ways, I think. And I think about this all the time.
First, the populations that we are now visiting, added to the types of programs we have always served,
give us greater opportunities to reach the more unreachable. Our visits are being requested by companies
and organizations that present greater challenges to our therapy teams and a different kind of benefit to
their recipients… like: Delaware Mentor - working on specific goals the site has for their residents who
are adults with physical and mental disabilities,
New Castle County Detention Center - working with a select group of adjudicated youth, and
The Delaware County Court System - pet therapy visits in court waiting areas for Family and Dependency
Courts.
Second, our teams (oh, thank you to every past, present, and future PAWS therapy team) do better visits.
We know more, our training has improved, we have provided additional training through PAWS
University to better understand the populations they are visiting. Don’t get me wrong. Our therapy teams
have always been among the best – really. But now a team having taken our Thinking Outside the Box
classes better understands what folks with dementia are going through and can offer a more personal,
more individualized visit. A team that visits one of our partnering hospitals will soon be able to take our
PATHS training (Pet-Assisted Therapy in Hospital Settings – get it?) and be more aware of the needs of
a hospitalized patient and the stressors experienced by the staff (which are quite different from those
experienced by an activities director in an assisted living residence or a teacher working with special
needs children.)
We offer comfort. We offer companionship. We offer our pets and our time to help people feel better.
Joy to the world? Remember our line in training – we provide the very best visit possible to everyone
involved. To me they are one in the same – and we are blessed to be growing, enabling us to offer more
joy to more people through more specialized visits. Lynne
It is time to start thinking about this year's
Wag-n-Walk
Saturday, Oct. 22nd at Delcastle Recreation Center
We’ve got a new theme!!!
We all know that pet therapy teams are Superheroes! The work of pet therapy turns everyday people and pets
into life-changing dynamic duos. PAWS pet therapy teams provide joy, comfort, support and encouragement to
those in need. That is truly HEROIC! This year’s theme is in honor of those teams and the magic they make.
The Wag-n-Walk is PAWS for People’s
biggest fundraising event and we need your help!
Be a Superhero…
Help us to identify participants, teams, vendors, & sponsors.
Create a Team!!!
Register online now at www.PAWSforPeople.org/wagnwalk. You can create a special page with a picture of
you and/or your pet and include your personal story of what PAWS for People means to you. Form a team and
invite others to join you. You can email friends and family asking for their support of your efforts. You can
even post your message on Facebook. There are so many great ways to raise funds to support the mission of
PAWS for People!
Invite Vendors
Do you or someone you know have a business that could benefit from having a vendor table at the Wag-n-
Walk? Over 500 people will be in attendance at this year’s walk. Being a vendor is a great way to get exposure
for your business. Vendors can learn more and register online at www.PAWSforPeople.org/wagnwalkvendor.
Secure Sponsorships
We need sponsors for this year’s walk. Sponsorship is a great way to show support for the pet therapy
programs of PAWS for People. Sponsorships range from $100 to $5,000 with benefits based on the level of the
donation. New this year…. Wag-n-Walk participants who help to obtain a new sponsorship can count the
donation toward their team’s fundraising totals! Share this great opportunity with your local businesses!
Sponsors can read more and download a sponsorship packet at www.PAWSforPeople.org/wagnwalksponsor.
Thank you!! We truly appreciate all of your support!
What is it? A wide array of workshops and courses that each focus on a
different type of visiting OR help you get ready to be accepted
in the program of your choice (STEX level pending).
Who can attend? Some classes are only for PAWS members; but some are open
to anyone. Bring a friend.
When and where? Check out the schedule of PAWS U classes below or listed on our website for dates and
locations of our classes. When we are in our new training center, MOST courses will be
taught there, but some will be held in a variety of convenient areas.
Ok, does it cost anything? - Only what it costs us in materials - $20.
How do I sign up? Go online to sign up or call the office and let us know your preferences.

member or even be working toward becoming a pet therapy team through PAWS to
take advantage of the dog training courses we offer.
Our new Puppy PAWS class is a great success. If you have a new puppy or a
friend who has a new puppy, please consider our class a good way to begin the little one’s socialization.
Tricks of the Trade: Come learn valuable “tricks” that you and your therapy companion can use while
visiting! These are all simple to learn and can add variety to you own repertoire of fun behaviors.
Therapy Dog Prep and Advanced Skills Training for the Therapy Dog focus on readying your dog for
actual therapy dog work by either laying some groundwork for the skills a therapy dog will need to get
started visiting with PAWS or honing those skills to advance your pup’s training to the next level.

In loving memory of...
Sassy Webb, one big bundle
of Chocolate Lab love, joined
PAWS with her special human
Anne in January of this year.
Sassy was an older lady when
she came to us but got in lots
of good reading time with the
kids at the Avon Grove
School.
Billy Blue Ewing was a
mighty handsome fellow –
tall and stately as only a
Doberman can be. He and
his human Wendy brought
joy to many people through
their work at the Atglen and
Parkesburg Libraries and a
very special special request with a young child on the
autism spectrum. The Ewings have been members
since November, 2009.
Riley D'Arcy and her
favorite human Jan joined
PAWS in September of
2012. Riley was a
beautiful Golden Retriever
and spent many hours
giving people the comfort
and joy that can come only from a special therapy pet.
Riley shared her visiting tips with sister Lucy, shown in
photo.
Elvis D'Agostino was one
of our first ever PAWS pet
therapy dogs, joining in the
early days of PAWS with his
human Luann. They did a little
bit of most every type of
PAWS pet therapy, delighting
and cheering everyone they met as they provided
“Elvis-love” to hundreds, especially at Exceptional
Care for Children.
ANDREA COX – Volunteer Coordinator
I am beyond thrilled to be a new addition to the PAWS
Office Team as Volunteer Coordinator. I have known
Lynne and of PAWS for many years, as I was their
bank teller! I recently graduated from Wilmington
University with a degree in Organizational Dynamics.
Since being hired, I am greatly enjoying getting to
know the PAWS staff and the many wonderful PAWS
volunteers that serve us so well.
GAIL FYFE – Office Support
Hi, I am Gail and I just recently started working with
PAWS for People! I am excited to start working with
such a wonderful organization and am grateful for this
opportunity.
A little bit of background – I am a Mom of two
children, 11 and 8. I have an awesome black lab Daisy
(age 4), 2 crazy cats Ziggy and Sam (age 7), a lovable
rabbit Chester (8 months), 2 silly hamsters, and Coco
the turtle! I enjoy spending time with family, our
animals, running, walking, football, baseball and enjoy
learning about healthy food choices.
The Power of a Pet Visit
I visited with Diane on Saturday. The visit was in an
apartment building in Haddon-Heights off a main road
near the downtown area, which is a safe place.
Diane is a lively, more active shut-in than I've visited in
the past, so it was a very easy visit! She has many
interests, including her 600 piece doll collection. She
said that the PAWS visits were her Christmas gift from
Bob and her daughter because of her love of dogs and
admittedly, she said, "sometimes I catch myself telling
the Rite Aide cashier stuff that's way too personal and
I know I need people to talk to." We've all been there!
Rintoo loved her and stayed with her the entire time.
After about an hour, he came to my side and I asked
him to visit with Diane for a few minutes more and then
say Goodbye, but she was finishing up a story, so he lay
down at her feet and fell asleep on her slippers! It made
her day!!

All the states we work with and
PAWS’ insurance policy
require that we maintain up-to-
date vaccination records for all our volunteer
therapy pets. If we don’t have a copy of your pet’s
current vaccine certificate on file – technically, you
shouldn’t be visiting. If your pet’s vaccines have
recently expired (or will be expiring by month-end),
you’ll receive a reminder email or phone call from
me. So, when your pet receives his or her rabies and
distemper boosters, please forward a copy to me,
here at the PAWS Office. I will update your
volunteer profile with the new vaccine date and
send a copy to your visiting site(s). You can mail
the updated vet records to the PAWS Office, fax it
to (302) 351-8116, or scan and email an electronic
version to [email protected]. Some folks
even snap a photo of their rabies certificate – and if
it’s readable, that works, too! Thank you so much
for helping PAWS stay in compliance!

ALWAYS Looking for helpers
To date we have graduated 15 LEAD Trainers and
currently have 6 new members working through the
process to become a certified PAWS trainer. Yea!
And we are always looking for folks who would just
like to attend orientation or training sometimes and just
help out. We ALWAYS need help – and we would love
to have you work with Rachel to be one of our sorely
needed helpers. If you are interested – please call
Rachel or email her at [email protected].

Master’s Certification – YES!
Congratulations to our newest
Master’s Certification teams – Brad
Dunckel and Luna, Ashley Kennedy
and Shaggy Dog, Marilyn Huebner
and Molly Bear, and Lois Brooks
and Rosie. We’ve got several more
teams working through the process and we will be
happy to share their names with you next issue.
So, for anyone thinking about trying for this prestigious
achievement, call me so we can get you started. Many
of you have really already accomplished many of the
requirements, so don’t let doubt stop you. Give Lynne
a call and we’ll see where you already are.
Here’s all you need:
100 hours of visiting time (or are getting close)
Attended at least 5 community events
Done at least 25 hours of service to PAWS
(that could be committee work or taking PAWS
classes – we get creative on this part)
an onsite shadow visit and short exam
Lynne will send you the appropriate paperwork and
work with you individually to complete the rest of our
requirements. YOU CAN DO IT!

O.M. What a busy summer we have had here at the PAWS
office! From O/S/T Sessions to Train the Trainer
Classes to Community Events and Social Gatherings,
hope you had a chance to participate in the fun.
After hearing about all the fun going on, I wanted to
jump in and be more involved, so I will be going
through the Train the Trainer program. I am excited to
work with all of our trainers and prospective teams. I
am also excited to meet our current teams to reSTEX.
Watch for my e-mails regarding due dates!
With our big move on the horizon and my new
endeavors I have a feeling fall is going to be a great
time of the year for PAWS!

Unleashing PAWS Magic Therapy Team Roles in PAWS
Expansion
By now you all know that PAWS is
growing – adding more sites, more
programs, more trainings – and soon
even a new, larger office/training
space. But we wouldn’t be where we
are today, or headed where we are
going, without YOU, the volunteer pet therapy team.
And you have played, and will continue to play, a vital
role in PAWS growth and we are eternally grateful!
Growth doesn’t always mean getting larger. In PAWS
speak, sometimes growth is measured by providing
more meaningful, impactful visits with folks. We do
this by offering a variety of PAWS University courses
to help enhance your own visiting techniques. And
many of our course ideas have been brought to us, and
even taught, by YOU, our therapy team volunteers.
Several of our partnering sites, also, have been
introduced to PAWS through our volunteers, and we
encourage these meaningful connections. And perhaps
most importantly, new therapy teams learn about
PAWS mostly through the good work YOU are doing –
attending community events, providing a multitude of
visits and sharing the passion you each have for PAWS
each and every day, which inspires other to join.
So thank you – for doing the good work you do: for
learning and growing with PAWS - for helping us
expand in so many ways. And if you know of a site that
may be perfect for PAWS, or have an idea for a
training, or know of someone who would be a great
therapy team, just let us know. The best PAWS
partnership is our own community, of which YOU are
an essential component.

Hi, Racine,
I just wanted to let you know that I had an amazing
visit at the Summit this morning. Everyone was so

delightful. We spent the majority of our time in the
memory unit and the response was precious. Rosie was
welcomed whole heartedly and she made sure to give
everyone an opportunity to scratch her belly!
Thanks for setting us up there.

Suggestions
3 Effective Supplements for Pet Weight Loss 1. L-Carnitine: this supplement is a vitamin-like, water
soluble, free-form amino acid. It has been found to play
a role in obesity, feline hepatic lipidosis, and behavioral
health.
2. White kidney bean extract: this has been found to
prevent the breakdown of starch and its absorption by
the body. Starch blockers like white kidney bean extract
are known to interfere with a specific digestive enzyme,
alpha amylase, which breaks down starch into simple
sugars. Without the action of alpha amylase, starch
cannot be broken down and absorbed into the body.
3. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil: the omega-3 fatty
acids found in fish oil have an effect on the
mitochondrion, the powerhouse of the cell, which is
responsible for generating the body’s heat and energy
from digested food materials. It has been found that
Omega-3 fatty acids have a direct effect on the part of
the mitochondrion that creates heat and energy.
The Power of a Pet Visit
Yes, we did go. I didn't know the family had
cancelled. Although, I think it was meant to be.
Duffy and I stayed for a while since we were there.
We had several routine visits. There was a woman
who was visibly very upset.... she had a friend with
her trying to console her. Duffy left the crowd and
went straight to her sitting at her feet!!!! She
immediately leaned over and started to pet Duffy and
broke into a grin....." just what I needed" she said
through her tears. Duffy continued to sit with her
until she was called to the exam room. When she left
she said "Thank you, Duffy". Everyone who
witnessed this was amazed, a few teared up....."
How did he know?" some asked. “That is what pet
therapy is all about,” I replied.
I am so glad we went....

easier during their internships.
Susan Greenholt, Michele Shockley, and Karen

courses and keeping our programs going.
Once again, thanks to Stephanie Callaghan for
being PAWS’ photographer for all the photo
shoots that took place over the summer.
Therapy
Team
Training
As a new trainer with PAWS for People, I am awed by
our new trainees who undergo training as therapy
teams. I had no idea how dedicated and loyal these
teams would be when I joined the organization in June.
What strikes me every time we are introduced to new
handlers with their pets, is the enthusiasm with which
they enter training. Of course everyone is a little
nervous and insecure; wondering what to expect, but
within minutes we become a group of supporters with
the same goal: bringing joy to those who need it!
We are looking forward to introducing many new teams
to our visiting sites before the year is over. PAWS for
People encourage ongoing education and training for
Therapy teams: we have many workshops and courses
with PAWS University, as well as Train the Trainer and
Advanced Training. Feel free to go to our schedule and
sign up for what interests you!

4 Best Times
Finding the opportunity to keep up with
regular training can be a challenge –
here’s what Animal Wellness magazine suggests:
1 – first thing in the morning
Ask for a sit before going out. Ask for a down when
it’s time to eat.
2 – during the day “captures”
Capturing the behaviors your dog spontaneously
performs is one of the easiest quickest methods to train
new and reinforce already trained behaviors.
3 – during the day “cues”
Try these: Want to go outside? Sit first
What to chase the ball? Lie down first
Want to go for a ride? Fetch your leash.
4 – the witching hours
Between 4:00 and 9:00 are times for energy spurts. Use
this enthusiasm to do some end of the day brushing up.
