Since 2010, the Province of Manitoba, in partnership with Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. and Onashowewin Inc., has hosted an annual, two- day gathering for families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) entitled “Wiping Away the Tears” (WATT). WATT provides a safe, caring and culturally appropriate space for MMIWG families to heal, to connect with one another and to share their stories of trauma, pain and resiliency. WATT employs both Western and traditional Indigenous healing trauma methodologies with therapists, counsellors, Elders and Spiri- tual Caregivers who conduct presentations on trauma/vicarious trauma and healthy cop- ing mechanisms. WATT also provides access to traditional ceremonies, including sharing circles, sweats and spiritual care.
