Gitahi Gachahi
It’s human nature to dream about the future. Most of us think of what ‘can’ be. But entrepreneurs think of what ‘will’ be.Once they have an idea they pursue it, convince others of its worth and make sure it becomes reality. Their ideas are different. They ask questions others don’t see and challenge the status quo. They inject a vibrant optimism into markets and industries of all types. Their importance is not just economic — they create jobs, improve communities all over the world and help others achieve their potential.
Some people have a vision of the future. Entrepreneurs turn it into reality.
For over two decades, the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year programme has celebrated entrepreneurship, in all its forms, locally and internationally. We have been rewarded with the privilege of honouring and getting to know some of the most gifted entrepreneurs in the world. With such illustrious alumni, it’s little wonderthat we take immense pride in recognising those among us who have dared a bit more, dreamed a bit wilder, looked a bit further, run a mile longer. We proudlycelebrate what it takes to look ahead and see more than just the here and now. This year the Eastern Awards celebrates their fourth year.
Entrepreneurs create many of the world’s most dynamic and successful companies. That’s why EY’s Entrepreneur of the year is considered the world’s most prestigious business award — because it goes to the most exceptional from among a unique group of people.
Every year, the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards gives entrepreneurs the recognition they deserve. As Country Managing Partner, Kenya and Regional I am extremely proud of this global programme that recognises and celebrates entrepreneurial energy, vision and passion.
Sponsor’s message
Standard Chartered Bank is proud to be associated with the EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards. Entrepreneurs are a unique asset to our economies across Africa – They bring new ideas, new jobs, new markets and often, healthy competition to the status quo. Entrepreneurs are invaluable assets within any economy, and appeal directly to Standard Chartered’s brand promise, ‘Here for good’ in that they contribute to the social and economic development of these economies.
Through these Awards, entrepreneurs are provided with a platform to demonstrate critical thinking, which is a panacea to surviving in today’s highly dynamic environment. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint-hearted, it takes courage to break new ground and test boundaries for the first time – that’s why Standard Chartered remains committed to supporting and facilitating up-and-coming individuals and businesses. We understand the entrepreneurial spirit, and its potential. Through various initiatives across our network, we have been at the for efront in creating a conducive atmosphere to help budding businesses graduate to successful ventures.
Entrepreneurs are playing an increasingly critical role in Africa achieving its long term economic potential. Standard Chartered’s international links, local expertise and global financial solutions make us the ideal partner in helping every entrepreneur secure a bright future. I look forward to meeting and learning from the pioneering entrepreneurs these awards aim to showcase.

Strategic Growth Forum Africa
EY hosts the Strategic Growth Forum (SGF) in several locations around the world, including the USA, Brazil, Mexico, China and India. These events are part-conference, part-workshop, part-networking, with the objective of identifying and connecting into new opportunities for growth.
This year, SGF Africa will be hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa in November, the 4th on African soil. The focus of our event is exclusively on Africa: on the strategic growth opportunities that the continent offers and the challenges that need to be addressed to realize these opportunities. Through the success of the three previous editions, SGF Africa has established a reputation as an unparalleled opportunity to network, share ideas and challenges, and learn from those who are doing business and implementing government policies across Africa.
The Entrepreneur Of The Year programme opens doors to business opportunities and networks in countries around the world. As a winner of the programme you will receive complimentary access to our Winners Network - an online networking site allowing you to connect with other Entrepreneur Of The Year alumni around the world.

2014: The Strategic Growth Forum (SGF) Africa 2014 was an unprecedented success. The forum had an inspirational line-up of speakers - from Ashish Thakkar, who left school at age 15 to begin building the Mara Group in Uganda; to Siya Xusa, the young scientist from Umtata, who won the top prize at the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States, a graduate from Harvard University; to Graca Machel, activist, leader, advocate for women and children’s rights, and widow of our beloved Madiba. We heard too from various leaders from across the private, public, and social sectors on a range of issues likely to impact on Africa’s future. The emphasis was far more on practical action and focus on a few areas that will have the biggest impact. In this context, five themes emerged as priorities for action:
• Embracing a philosophy of shared value• Promoting entrepreneurship• Accelerating regional integration• Bridging the infrastructure gap• Forging productive partnerships Working together we have an opportunity to make a genuine difference in realising the dream of great African leaders like Nelson Mandela; to help build an Africa that is prosperous, where human potential has the opportunity to flourish, and in which nobody is left behind.
