Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this pray-er for our sick brothers and sister whom you have re-deemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Matthew 13: Wheat and Weeds
Jesus’ parable concerning the weeds growing among the wheat (Mt 13:24-43) is about the Kingdom of heaven, not about the Church—biblical scholars and theologians see a rigid distinction between the two. However, I would like to take that image in this parable to paint a picture of our Church. Spiritual author Ronald Rolheiser, in his book The Holy Longing, appeals to the crucifixion scene as a good image of the Church: the Son of God hung between two thieves. People looking at that scene back then would have had no idea who the good (or bad) thief was. The good mingles with the bad—just as the weeds are mixed with the wheat, and sometimes it is impossible to separate them. Within the Church, grace and sinfulness, sanctity and pettiness, fidelity and betrayal… all go together. We belong to a church that slaughtered people in the Crusades, that enforced the Inquisition, that endorsed centuries of imperial-ism in poor countries throughout the world, etc. Our Church also has to deal with pedophile ministers. All in all, the Church we belong to has betrayed the Gospel throughout the centuries, and continues to do so these days… At the same time, our Church has also done the greatest things possible. It has produced finest saints such as Francis and Dominic, Teresa of Avila, and many more. Our Church has spoken on behalf of the poor and the underprivileged on questions of social justice, even when it is not “politically correct” to do so. It has established important institutions such as hospitals and schools, and helped advance education in many countries… Such is the church community that we belong to: it is like the God hung between two thieves, like the weeds intermingled with the wheat. Our Church can be great one moment and petty the next. But ultimately when you (believers and non-believers alike) ask the question: can the grace of God work in and through all our human limitations? The answer is: Yes and Yes.
The parable of the wheat and weeds also gives us another important insight. The Master of the field tells the servants not to uproot the weeds, or else they may also pluck up the wheat. Sometimes in our extreme enthusiasm we may attempt to uproot all the evils of this world. The parable warns us NOT to do so. This is not so much a call to be passive in the face of evils, but a good reminder that we are not in charge, that we cannot solve all the problems in life: God alone is in charge. In the end, God will see to it that good triumphs over evil. In the end, the weeds will be plucked out and thrown away. This is the conviction that the Kingdom of God will prevail. But all that is God’s job, not ours. We just have to sit back and relax and let the Master take care of his harvest!
