National Convention Centre, Vientiane, Lao PDR Sunday 28 February 2016 9.30am to 5.00pm (Registration at 9.00am) “Design a small hydropower project in one day” British Hydropower Training is holding a one-day workshop in partnership with Gilkes Hydropower Systems. This has been made possible through the kindness of Aqua Media International Ltd and is to be held prior to their “Asia 2016” conference and exhibition at the National Convention Centre, Vientiane, Lao PDR. The Workshop: Many factors are considered in the design and construction of the optimum hydropower project. All parts of a scheme are interrelated and interdependent. Change one component and all others are affected. This workshop is aimed at people who are, or will be, involved in hydropower development as part of rural electrification programmes and development of projects. It will cover run-of-river hydropower projects in the “pico” to “mini” range – approximately 1kW to 10MW capacity. Being a diverse form of energy production, there are always areas which are unfamiliar to people despite many individual specialisms. This workshop “fills in the gaps” and helps people to gain a good basic grounding in the topic. All relevant aspects will be covered from rainfall to energy evaluation including: Analysis of scheme location and definition of potential catchments Turning rainfall into an available flow range from a catchment and the use of a Flow Duration Curve Power and energy generated calculation Intake structures, channel and/or pipeline routes and sizing Powerhouse design and equipment Turbine selection Generator, controls, switchgear options and grid considerations This is a “hands-on” workshop which involves the participants, developing an actual hydropower project during the day. After presentations on the individual scheme aspects, the groups will put together the components of the project. This will follow through to the completed design. We will be using a potential small hydropower site in Lao PDR as the group project based on topographical map surveys and papers relevant to hydropower within rural electrification in the country. SMALL HYDROPOWER WORKSHOP

National Convention Centre, Vientiane, Lao PDR Sunday 26 February 2016

British Hydropower Training in partnership with Gilkes Hydropower Systems

David Williams and Gordon Black have designed and operated successful small hydropower training courses for the British Hydropower Association (BHA) from 2013. The UK hydropower sector has expanded as a result of UK Government incentives to increase development on Renewable Energy generation capacity. There has therefore been an urgent need for training of personnel entering all parts

of the industry.

Courses are designed to provide knowledge and understanding of all the main aspects and how they interact with one another.

Twelve courses have been provided to date attracting 130 participants from 80 companies as well as specific sessions and workshops for others.

Prof. David Williams CEng. FIMechE, David Williams has been involved in the hydropower sector for 42 years. Trained as a mechanical engineer, he worked for Gilkes as Sales Engineer to Manager of the Hydropower Department. He later moved into export promotion setting up and managing a regional office for South Asia and South East Asia, based in Malaysia.

From 2000 he was seconded to UKTI (UK Government trade support department) as Hydropower Export Promoter. He then moved to the British Hydropower Association as its Chief Executive until the end of 2014.

David is engaged as a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh. He runs an annual ten-week inter-disciplinary group course for 4th Year MEng undergraduates on the design of a hydro scheme.

Gordon Black Gordon Black and his business partner Nick Forrest founded babyHydro in 2008. The business is exclusively focused on designing and developing run-of-river hydropower schemes for landowners and communities. It has installed schemes from 10kW to 500kW and has recently expanded its range to include pico hydropower solutions.

Prior to this Gordon spent 27 years working with British Telecom, mainly in London and Cambridge, in a variety of roles including marketing, sales, product

management and bid management. His final role, before returning to Scotland, was in the BT Laboratories where he was Business Development Manager for the company’s corporate incubator, BT Brightstar.

He has an Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Strathclyde University and a MBA in Strategic Marketing.

Established in 1853, Gilkes is an international company offering complete water to wire solutions for small hydroelectric developments; Activities include design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, testing, routine service and plant upgrade.

Gilkes offers a range of hydroelectric turbines capable of generating up to 20MW from a single unit. The range consists of Pelton, Francis and Turgo turbines (invented by Gilkes in 1919) and includes compact solutions for the 50kW to 100kW market.

Drawing on the vast experiences gained from over 160 years of designing, manufacturing and commissioning hydro schemes, Gilkes excels in servicing and plant modernisation - from single part replacement to fully rehabilitating whole installations back to their optimum working efficiencies.

Gilkes exports to over 80 countries from the main manufacturing facility in the UK. It also has offices in the USA and Japan servicing the North American and Far East hydro markets directly.

Representing Gilkes at the Small Hydropower Workshop and at Asia 2016 are: • Andy Eaton, International Hydro Sales Manager • Julia Chaplin, Marketing and Sales Executive
