PRINCIPALS REPORT

Welcome back to Term 3. On the first day back this term, I took the opportunity to meet with each year group to not only welcome them back but to also explain why we need to continue to abide by health directives to remain safe in the COVID-19 environment. As a school we continue to have an extra 4 hours per day enhanced cleaning, the bubblers remain closed (students reminded to bring own drink bottle) and sporting games and equipment selected to minimise contact. As a school we are committed to keeping everyone safe, including taking details of visitors into the school. If staff or students are tested for COVID-19 I need to be informed so I can notify the Department of Education Incident Hotline. This means that if a case is confirmed protocols can be put in place early. A number of school activities remain on hold and will be reconsidered during the term. These include large-scale parent gatherings, parent volunteers in classrooms, and interstate excursions. These activities remain on hold until the situation stabilises. Information Evenings Our annual information evenings are obviously cancelled due to the limit on large-scale parent gatherings. Executive staff have been reworking our Information Booklets to make them more user friendly. For Year 10 students, Mr Packer is interviewing each student individually in his role of Year Adviser and having an informal chat regarding their future careers and the subjects for Year 11 and 12 to get them there. This obviously supports the work Mrs Riesinger has been doing with Year 10 all year in “Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways” including work readiness, career plans, job investigation, resume writing, patterns of study for ATAR and non-ATAR careers. For Year 8 into 9 students there will be information sessions put in place during the school day to support their decisions. Further information regarding specific activities will be communicated directly to Year 8 and Year 10. Year 12 Trial Exams We have moved the trial exams to Week 7 to allow for more face to face lesson time in each subject area. As a school we are extremely proud of this group and the resilience to keep doing their best in the challenging COVID-19 times. Mr Razborsek is currently exploring options for the Year 12 Farewell for the end of the term, he does promise it will be special regardless of the format! Education Week The theme this year is ‘LearningTogether’. We will be posting photos on the school website and Facebook showing our students and staff ‘learning together’.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS REPORT

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter. Welcome to Term 3. In my last newsletter of Term 2 I wrote about the pleasing way teachers, students and parents/carers had valued education during the covid-19 restrictions and how high expectation was for all of us a clear goal in maintaining and improving educational outcomes and opportunities for every student at KHS. ‘every student is known and valued’, will always be the focus of education at KHS. If teachers, students and parent/carers all maintain high expectations then the quality of our learning environment, improves. In Term 3 the focus will be on: engagement and participation in learning opportunities, attendance and wearing uniform. Regular fulltime attendance is vital when measuring student progress and engagement. During the Covid-19 restriction KHS data measured student daily participation in home study at above 85%. That is above 260 of 305 students connected every day. Since our return to school in Term 3 our full day absence rate has been around 20% each day. That is over 60 students absent every day. I strongly suggest that this rate is unsatisfactory and as a community valuing education, you join me in an effort to reduce daily absent rates below 10%. That is 30 students per day! I encourage parents/carers to lead the effort and look forward to reporting in September on a term absent rate of below 10%. David Hanley—Deputy Principal

SCIENCE In Year 8 Science we are investigating Forces. Students are calculating the Newtons of Force applied to riding a skateboard by measuring their mass, calculating their acceleration. This demonstration aimed to enhance students understanding of forces and resistance. It’s fun too. Mr O’Meara
