MEMBERS of the New Apostolic Churchheld a clean-up campaign on Saturday, torid the city of the illegal abortion posters.

The congregation’s youth leader, BrentScharneck, said they decided to do theclean-up in support of the campaignlaunched by members of the Nelson Mande-la Bay Municipality (NMBM) Building In-spectorate who have decided to address thesituation in their private capacities. Apartfrom rolling up their sleeves and removingthe posters from buildings in the area fromRussell Road towards Albany Road via Gov-an Mbeki Avenue, they have also created afacebook page to use as a communication

channel to the broader community.“We came up with this idea to use social

media to make people aware of the problemand asked them to join us in an attempt toclean up our city,” said NMBM Building In-spector, Susan Barnardo.

“Our department has a very small subsec-tion that deals with signage on buildings.These abortion stickers are one of the head-aches that they need to deal with, but it isa losing battle due to the nature thereof,”said Barnardo.

Bernardo said they were inviting all sec-tor police forums and security companieswhich control the streets at night to assistin capturing these culprits.

According to Sharneck they want to en-sure that young people receive the correct

information about legal and illegal abor-tions.

“There is a common illness in our socie-ty,of youth alcoholism and drug abuse. Wehave also seen an increase in the illegalabortion posters that deceive the youth,”said Scharneck.

Scharneck said over 30 youths took partin the clean-up campaign.

“The response from our campaign wasbrilliant, many people in the community ofPE were encouraging and the clean-up real-ly brought awareness of the dangers ofthese posters in our streets,” said Schar-neck.

Scharneck said they would have anotherclean-up campaign on September 19 in theGreenacres area.

CREATIVE senior citizens are making theworld a happier place for needy kids by usingtheir hands to create craft works as part of the“Pretty Things for Little Things” national com-petition.

AlgoaBayCouncil for theAged, aswell as theZizameleCentre,haveorganisedseniorcitizensof the Walmer township community to partici-pate in thenational seniorcitizenscompetition.Zizamele Community Worker, Zuki Keswa,

said they had been working on the project forover 6 months – partly to keep the elderly busyin a creative way and to also provide toys andmuch needed handmade crafts for kids.“We started participating in the ‘Pretty

Things for Little Things’ competition 4-yearsago.Thisprojectprovidestheelderlywithactiv-

ities. They have a busy schedule and also theyknow that their work is for a good cause,” saidKeswa.One of the senior citizens, Thozamile Spiel-

man 73,made guitars out of recycled tins, scrapwood, old clothes and wool, “I love creatingthese toys. Many of the products I made, suchas the guitar,come from skills I learnt when Iwas a boy when I used to build toy cars fromscrap metal,” said Spielman.“Pretty Things for Little Things” organisers

fromAge-in-Action said theywere proud of theresponse they had received from the differentcommunities of the elderly in the country.“This competition shows that the elderly are

still contributors to society. They use their tal-ents and recycled goods to make a variety ofitems for kidswho normally do not receive anygifts during Christmas,” said Age-in-ActionCEO, Ingrid Cupido.

IN 2007 a very nervousmomcame to the Lor-raine Play and Learn Centre and asked if wewould take her little boy, Bradley Akers, of3 months into our care, but she added thathe has a rare disease (arthrogryposis - walk-ing disability) and that he would never beable to walk.

Over the years with us he accomplishedso much and with inspiration from histeachers and carers, he turned out to inspireus all over the years. He showed all the doc-tors after all the operations that he wouldwalk someday. We at Lorraine Play andLearnCentre sawhimgrowand develop andsaw him as our Little Angel, who would finda way to do everything on his own. He leop-ard crawled to move from one place to theother until one day in 2012 he surprised usall.Itwas an ordinary day... He came to school

happy and laughing with his friends whenall of a sudden he just shouted and saidLOOK!LOOK!We all looked andwhat didwesee? Here he was taking his first steps and

since then he just walked – geting strongerand stronger each day. He had us all in tears.For our Casual Day on 6 September we had

a little fundraiser for him as he is going to bigschool (Northern Lights) next year and we allwore some hats.

ASPIRING female writers are invited to thePeople Opposing Women’s Abuse (POWA)workshops at NMMU on Saturday.

The workshops lead to POWA’s annual Na-tional Writing Anthology Project, whichhelps elevate female aspiring writers in themedia industry, bringing awareness to dif-ferent issues affecting women.

According to POWA, the NMMU Mission-vale campus will be host to many female as-piring writers who will be mentored by jour-nalist Kazeka Mashologu Kuse to ensure abetter chance in the National Writing An-thology Project.

“This workshop is for all women. Theworkshops, as well as the competition,seekto reach out to as many potential writers aspossible with the aim of helping aspiringwomen writers by providing means designedto support female writers in their endeav-ours,” said Kuse.

The workshop is open to all women and be-gins at 8.30am. “Only the first 25 aspiringwriters to arrive at NMMU will partake inthe workshop,” she said.

Kuse believes the project will open doorsfor aspiring writers, columnists or journal-ists the same way it opened doors for her.

“My first personal essay for the POWAwriting project in 2009 got published and wonin its category, which got noticed by the O,The Oprah magazine, and put my writing onthe national space,” said Kuse.

The POWA annual women’s writing an-thology project began in 2006 purely as a com-petition for aspiring female writers,andtransformed into a women’s writing project.POWA Project Manager, Nonhlanhla Siban-da,said, “In 2009, it changed to a project be-causewerealised that the structureofhavingit as a competition created the risk of havingwomen compete against each other ratherthan working together.”

PORT Elizabeth’s Charmaine Kleynhans be-came the first contestant to be voted offSABC2’s TheBig Break Legacy entrepreneur-ial TV reality show recently.

The winner of the show will receive a R5-million boost to their business but Kleynhansis no longer part of the exciting battle.

However, Kleynhans (49) – whose business-es makes kettles that boil water without elec-tricity, gas or making a fire – did not feel shehad let herself down.

“It was tough and the task required us tocome up with an innovative idea to sell hairweaves at a Johannesburg taxi rank. Thingsjust didn’t go right for me and it was a disap-pointing day. To be honest I was totally outof my comfort zone.

“However, I don’t feel I failed either myteam or myself because I was actually doingmy best.”

When Kleynhans first entered the househeryoungdaughter gaveher abox with inspi-rational notes for each day she was on theshow, which she could draw fromwhen need-ed. “I didn’t manage to draw toomany notes,”she said wistfully.

Kleynhans is determined to continue withher innovative kettle business and helpmakea difference in the lives of many South Afri-cans.

She added that the show was certainly hot-ting up and,making for compulsive watching:“Itwillmake interestingviewing, but I’mgladI’m going out with dignity because I think alot of them will lose that.”

Kleynhans is disappointed she won’t begiven the chance to join the other contestantswhen they go overseas to record two episodesin the Netherlands and one in London. It isbelieved to be the first time a South African-based show would do some tasks abroad.

These books, which were donated to thenewspaper by our loyal and supportive read-ers, were donated and distributed to variousschools and other organisations over the pastfew weeks.

After reading about this initiative, three la-dies from businesses in Port Elizabeth offeredto treatPEExpress staff members to a morningof pampering and a mini make-over in an at-tempt to “pay forward” their good deed to oth-ers.

“Your commitment to others in the commu-nity has not gone unnoticed! Thank you to thePE Express team,” said Leanda Mackay from

Landi’s Beauty Salon, who did the beautytreatments.

The three lucky recipients – Erika Steyn(sales representative), Jeanette Kleyngeld(tele consultant) and Tanya van Zyl (online ed-itor) – each received a skin analysis, facial,hair wash and styling and make-up.

The hair was done by Ronel from Hair Zone;the skincare was done and make-up (AvroyShlain) supplied by Sonneke Lategan,and Le-anda from Landi’s did the make-up and skinanalysis.

PEARSON High School and Collegiate HighSchool are once again through to the Provincialfinals of the prestigious FNB Alexander Play-house Festival, which will be held in East Lon-don at the Guild Theatre in October.

Both schools made the finals last year, withPearson winning the Lynette Alexander Float-ing Trophy and a R10 000 cash award for theirproduction of Exhibit X.

This year their production of Frenzy, pennedby their drama educator, Linda-Louise Swain,deals with Forbidden Initiation, the frenzy ofmob mentality and the dire consequences. Thesame cast who performed Exhibit X are nowmatric subject drama learners and will performFrenzy. The Collegiate High School production,Kindred Spirits, has also been penned by their

drama educator, Anabel Longe, and incorpo-rates the writings of Ingrid Jonker and SylviaPlath. Having been selected from the initialround, they will now face eight other produc-tions and a final three will be selected for re-per-formance by the Patron of the Festival and ChiefProvincial Adjudicator, Deon Opperman. Afteran individual workshop with each of these threeproductions, Opperman will present the awardsat the Gala evening on October 12, followingtheir performances.

The Festival was initiated in 2010 by Deon Op-perman, Multi-Award-winning SA Playwright,DirectorandProducerofTheatreandTelevisionand last year FNB joined him as the major spon-sors of the festival, which also offers a Best per-formance award of a R35 000 bursary for study.

“Beide my ouers was kunstig en het onsdikwels spesiaal Bloemfontein toe geneemvir vertonings. As kinders het ons in ons vryetyd gesing, gedans en boeke gelees.

“Pieter se familie is almal baie musikaal enkreatief en hy kan homself baie goed uitdrukin sang en skryf,” se Jana.

Hulle beoog ook om later skrywers te nooivir boekpraatjies en poësie-voorlesings.

“Ons kan net 50 mense akkommodeer so ditgaan die gaste ’n ongelooflike lekker geleent-heid gee om die kunstenaars in ’n gemaklikeen huislike omgewing te geniet en te leerken,” se Jana.

FOUR things stood out forme duringmy timespent with the Nissan Murano, i.e. its seatthat automatically adjusts to your favouriteseating position as you get into your vehicleand automaticallymoves back for ease of exit-ing the vehicle, the bootlid which closes auto-matically at the press of a button, a camerashowing what’s behind the vehicle as soon asit is slotted into reverse and the third pedalin an automatic car which usually only hastwo pedals.

Onemayaskhow is it possible that there areonly four things that stood out in a car thatcosts over R600 000. Well with a not-so-averageprice tag, one would expect, and take it forgranted, that this vehiclewouldperformaboveaverage and offer above average features.And the Murano certainly doesn’t disap-

point. It looks good, performs well and offersa lot of features one would expect in a premi-um car. And with cars in this price segmentbeing equal in what they offer, it is often thelittle things that add value to the buyer’s spe-cific lifestyle needs that clinch the deal.Being a mother, always in a hurry, often

with lots of bags and packages in my handsand on a strict time schedule, having the boot-lid close while you are already running to-wards the shop or towards the driver’s seat,and a camera to see what’s behind you onthose morning rush-hours in the school park-ing lot, are almost a basic necessity once youget used to them.And the third pedal? This is used to activate

and deactive the handbrake.The Murano test driven is the 3.5i V6 4WD

CVT.

Interior:From outside and inside the car has a pre-

miumlook.On the inside this look is certainlyenhanced by the dual panel moonroof.The high-quality dash houses a sophisticat-

ed looking instrument panelwith unclutteredcontrol layout. The only fault I could find is

that the controls for the audio system and cli-mate control look very much the same. Iwould have preferred a different look for eachset as one often has to use peripheral visionto adjust these and if they look the same ittakes longer getting used to adjusting thesewhile on the move.TheMurano offersmore than adequate car-

go space and if even more storage space isneeded, its 60/40 split-folding rear seats dropforward to create an expanded load floor thatis double in size.

Features:TheMurano is equippedwithNissan’s Con-

nect Premium combined entertainment andSATNAV system. The 40GB hard drive-basedsystem has a high resolution and with a Bird-view display that has day and night display.Other features include keyless entry and a

keyless push-button start, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and a Bose 11-speaker sound system. There are also leatherupholstery, heated front seats, power tiltingandtelescopingheatedsteeringwheelwithcon-trols for the cruise control, phone and audio.

Ride:The CVT automatic gearbox did sound as

though it was struggling a bit between gears- but only for the first two or three gears. Onceit sped up there is absolutely no moaning andgroaning.For abig car, theMuranohas a surprisingly

sedan like drive and even parking in my fa-vourite shopping centre’s cramped under-ground parking lot, was easy. Its handlingand steering are sharp and the engine is quiteresponsive. The poor rear visibility is madeup for by the camera display.

Standard safetyAmong the Murano’s safety features are

ABS brakes, stability control, traction control,six airbags and active front head restraints.

RideTheNissanMurano gives an agile, yet nice-

ly balanced ridewith good cornering despiteits size. The Murano’s ride is comfortableand composed and despite its sporty natureitdeliversanon-roadfeelthatisrelaxedenoughfor the daily commute,aswell as for carting thefamily around town. TheMurano is also one ofthosecross-overvehicles thatyoushouldnotbescaredtotakeoff theroadoronpoorroadcondi-tions. Its large 18- or 20-inch wheels,coupled

with itshugegroundclearance,make it just theve-hicle to get adventurous with.

the Urban Run at 9am with local artist GinoFabbri set to entertain the participants beforethe start. Muck Run returns this summerFollowing the sell-out for the winter Muck

Run, a summer version has been establishedover the weekend of November 9 and 10.The Muck Run, sponsored by The Edge Fi-

nancialGroup, isanuntimed5kmmuddybushrun with various fun obstacles and is suitablefor the most social of participants. All aboutgreat fun and friendship team building, theMuck Run is hosted at Bushpig Adventuresand has various batch starts.TheKids’MuckDash is for kids 11 years and

under and will be between 1km and 2km andstarts at 2pm on Saturday, November 9.In order to cope with the demand for the
