Peace River Riders Bicycle Club Newsletter - March 2010
Our bike club was honored to host Mr. Darol Carr, Attorney at Law with the local Farr Law firm. Mr. Carr provided a very in-formative and enlightening presentation on two aspects of insurance needs; 1) If you hurt someone and, 2) If you
get hurt. Throughout his presentation, Mr. Carr empha-sized three important insurance items to jot down and discuss with your insurance carrier: 1. Umbrella Insurance 2. Uninsured Motorist Insurance 3. Stack-It Below is a brief summary on the two insurance aspects Mr. Carr presented, along with the 3 important items to remember and discuss with your insurance carrier. You Hurt Someone • Generally, while you are on your bike and hit someone, you are responsible. You
on your bike are considered a machine, and the machine is responsible. • Do not rely or assume your home owner’s insurance policy will cover you.
Homeowner policies are becoming more restrictive. • Important Item No. 1 - Umbrella Insurance - This type of coverage can help pro-
tect your liability and cover you when you are off your property. Make sure to obtain documentation (conformation in writing) that your umbrella policy covers your bike.
You Get Hurt • Who pays for my bike? Check your property damage insurance, most are limited
at $10,000.
• Who pays for my medical bills? You insurance pays the first $10,000 (you may be responsible to pay 80% of that, unless you have Medical Payment coverage).
• After the $10,000 is used up, the person who caused you to get hurt, pays. When that runs out your medical/health in-surance pays.
• It is important to realize the fact that 42% of drivers in the state of Florida do not carry insurance. So how can you pro-tect yourself. Important Item No. 2 - Uninsured Motorist Insurance. Discuss with your insurance carrier the options available to carry this protection. Be sure to request your uninsured motorist be under your umbrella coverage.
• For folks who have multiple vehicles, research Important Item No. 3 - Stack-it. This term is used to “stack” your policy limits together. Say you have three vehicle all with one million dollars of coverage. By stacking, you can combine all three policies to obtain three million dollars of coverage. Talk with you carrier.
Insurance and Biking Guest Speaker - Darol Carr, Attorney at Law
Page 2
Mr. Carr also provided our club with four items to do, whether you hurt someone or get hurt:
• ICE (In Case of Emergency) - Add “ICE” as a contact to your cell phone’s address book.
• Get pictures - most cell phones have a camera. Remember to obtain photos in a accident.
• Inform your insurance carrier of any accident, even if you (at first) do not feel hurt.
• Get treatment and continue with it.

Be the first to order your new Peace River Riders Official Team Jersey. Liz Chudoba presented a variety of logos, colors and designs for club members to consider.
Please let us know if you have any sponsors in mind that would like to support our club and help us pay for the jer-seys. We will place their logo on the jersey.
Please see Court’s sample sponsor request letter attached at the end of this newsletter for infor-mation to present to your potential sponsor.
These photos were sent to me as part of one of those mass forwarded e-mails. Australia - At 120 degrees, it was so hot for a week that koalas were asking people for water.
A behind the scenes reporter and camera crew
captured a glimpse of the newest bicycle contrap-
tion under development. Who Ordered It and
Why? Below are some guesses, What do you
think?
• Earl’s next cross county trip.
• Bill’s 24 hour bike club meeting center.
• Court’s new Friday ride party wagon.

Randy Ice P.T., C.C.S founded SCOR in the mid 70’s in California . His “Cool Breeze from The Iceman” monthly cardiac health information articles can be found on the SCOR website www.bikescor-florida-charlotte.com under the “News” tab.
We thought this month’s information might be of interest to many of you, enjoy. Eric Stockley”
OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS UPDATE A few columns back I discussed telomeres and what their function is. Basically, they contain DNA sit at the end of chromo-
somes and as cells divide and replicate, they gradually shorten. When they reach "nub" status, the cell cannot divide any longer, will go into senescence and die. Hence, slowing down the rate of telomere degradation is central to slowing the aging process itself, which in turn is central to disease prevention. There are 300 - 600 DNA "snippets" (base pairs) on telomeres that can be used for replication. Exposure to toxins, free radicals, infections, excessive stress, inflammation, drug and alcohol abuse can speed up telomere shorten-ing. Exercise and antioxidants protect them. Now a new study at UCSF done with 608 adults with coronary disease who were taking fish oil capsules exam-ined the amount of DHA and EPA (the two primary omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil) in their white blood cells at the beginning of the study and again 5 years later. Those who had the highest amount of DHA and EPA in their WBC
membranes had the longest telomeres whereas those with the least amount of omega 3's had the shortest telomeres! The rate of telomere shortening was 2.6X faster in those with the lowest level of RBC omega 3 fatty acid content. So here is one more reason to take at least 2500 mg of DHA + EPA together daily. OMEGA 3 FATTY ACID INDEX AND SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH I recently attended an all day seminar hosted by Metagenics on "Functional Medicine." This refers to the use of foods and nutrients to treat disease rather than drugs if feasible and effective. In the course of the presentation, Dr. Jeffrey Bland presented data on a similar concept as I mentioned in the above section, namely measuring the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids in Red Blood Cell membranes. There are 64 different fatty acids in our cell membranes, and if for example we actually measured and found (3) EPA and/or DHA fatty acids in the Red Blood Cell membrane, 3/64 = 4.6% would be the "Omega Index." Take a look at the data below that examined the Omega Index and risk of sud-den cardiac death, the most common cause of death in this country.

April 10 thru 16, 2010 - Florida Multi-Day Event - Ladies Only
4th Annual “Wheelin Women” Ride - Contact Karen at ACME Bike Shop 941-258-3400
This is not a race it is a gathering of women for camaraderie, friendship and a sense of accomplishment. LADIES ONLY and re-
quirements are you must ride a road bike or fitness bike which is a road bike style but with straight handlebars and a little wider
tires. You must be able to ride at least 50 miles a day. Last year we road between 55 to 85 miles per day. You have all day, it's a
piece of cake, it's just getting your bottom used to it and your stamina. Last year we had several ladies in their 70's and they were
amazing, they out rode some of us younger ones. Sag carries your belongings. Fee is $200. which covers sag drivers round trip,
beverages & snacks carried in sag van, rental vans, all fuel, maps, misc. Also covers refreshments at meeting/bicycle repair class
before we leave. I book the hotels and give you the info to reserve your room with however many roomies you want to
share the expense. You are responsible for your meals, usually breakfast is covered at the motel.

Officially I have 25 ladies going on April 10 thru April 16. We leave
from Acme in Port Charlotte for Madison, FL and ride back to
Acme in Punta Gorda. My sister Carla is our sag van & trailer
driver again, she has just recuperated from back surgery and is
ready to go. I have also rented a bus and extra trailer to haul our
overload of bikes & gear. One of the highlights is our second night
we stay at Steinhatchee Resort Landing, where we have rented 3
houses and will have a catered dinner that night after riding 70+
miles. This resort is quaint with pool, sauna, lake, etc. We're really
roughing it!!! All our motel stays are nice as usual. I'm sure Earl
will surprise us ladies with a little home coming party at the store
and will invite everyone.

Re: Sponsorship Opportunity Peace River Rides Bicycle Club
Dear Mr. Lansdale
My name is Court Nederveld and I am the Activities Director of Peace River Riders Bicycle Club. The Peace River Riders are a Charlotte County club that promotes cycling for enjoyment, health, transportation, safety and touring. We are a member of the League of American Cyclists and the Florida Bicycle Association. Our club started the Florida SCOR (Specialized Cardiac Outpatient Rehabilitation) which has now spread to Orlando and Jacksonville with more clubs planning to use the model for their areas. We are an advocate for cycling opportunities in our county, communicating with local and state officials regarding cycling access, safety, routes and tourism within Charlotte County.
The club has been running for over a year now and in that time we have grown to over 50 members with our goal this year to hit the 100 member mark. We are fortunate to include in our membership a certified State Bicycle Instructor, Sports Medicine professional and several local bicycle shops. We offer several weekly rides for members of different strengths and goals, including rides for cardiac patients and leisure riders. Many non members also join us on these rides. We also serve as a contact point for cycling tourists coming to Charlotte County to team up and enjoy all that Charlotte County has to offer. The club also has worked very hard to build channels of communication with local governments pertaining to share the road signage and to educate both riders and drivers on the safe operation of their respective machines and the responsibilities each has to the other.
We are very proud of our achievements and the hard work of a lot of people connected with the club led to our first year success. Several of our club members were invited to Liberty Elementary School to share our experiences, equipment and safety practices with 103 third graders. We have hosted speakers from sports medicine to insurance and law as it pertains to cycling. A club member also sits on the board of the Florida Bicycle Association.
There are however many expenses connected with running the club and we rely for funding solely on our own fundraising events and the support of local businesses.
The next major project for the club is to outfit members with riding jerseys. We have designed our club logo and chosen colors for the jerseys that will stand out and be very visible to the public as our members travel around the county in their role as bicycle ambassadors. I have attached a drawing of the jersey we plan to have produced. These jerseys cost approximately $55 each and our hope is to defray most or all of this cost by offering businesses the opportunity to sponsor their company logos on the jersey just as many companies do on the rider’s jersey in the Tour De France and other cycling events. As a company with a strong presence in Charlotte
Count we would love to have your logo appear on our jerseys. Perhaps this might be something you would consider helping us with. We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you about this
In return for your sponsorship we would list your company as a key sponsor on all our club literature, website (www.peaceriverridersbicycleclub.com and www.bikescor-florida-charlotte.com) and monthly newsletter. Our club has also organized several public rides here in Charlotte County, The Solomon’s Castle Ride, The Peace River Bicycle Classic and the Peace River Riders Poker Ride. It would be fun to organize an event with your company as the lead in on the name of the ride. As you are probably aware, more and more cyclists are appearing on our streets as people discover the benefits associated with this very simple machine. As their numbers grow our Club hopes to set the bar for safety, fun, and transportation. These jerseys will give us the visibility we need to carry our message. There may also be the opportunity for other promotions as the club develops other goals.
We do hope that this is something you might be willing to consider. We can provide you with further details and a full break down of the likely costs of any arrangement and I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you further about this. I will contact you next week to see if you would like to take things further.
Thank you for giving this your consideration. Best Regards
