BUCK, Pearl S.. The Chinese Novel:Nobel Lecture Delivered Before theSwedish Academy at Stockholm,December 12, 1938. New York: John DayCompany (1939). First edition. Fine in a rubbed andworn, about very good dustwrapper with faint remnantsof a label on the spine, in a well-rubbed but intact, goodplus cardboard slipcase. This copy Inscribed by Pearl S.Buck to her biographer and friend Ted Harris: “ForTheodore F. Harris, in undying friendship, Pearl S.Buck.” Buck’s association with Harris was the source of ascandal that marred both her reputation and herrelationship with her family. After the death of hersecond husband, Richard Walsh, the elderly Buckemployed Harris, a dance instructor at a local ArthurMurray’s dance studio, as a dancing tutor to herdaughters. Harris quickly insinuated himself into Buck’shousehold, helping to arrange fund raising events forBuck’s charities, and eventually was appointed by Buck tohead her new foundation. An investigation by the otherBoard members resulted in a report that branded him “acon man and a practicing homosexual” but Buck wasundeterred, captivated by Harris’ youthful enthusiasm. She eventually assigned all of her royalties to thefoundation against a large loan that Harris used, amongother things, to purchase luxury automobiles for himselfand his friends, raised his salary from $7500 per annumto $45,000 per annum guaranteed for life, and similarperks. Harris additionally hired most of his danceinstructor colleagues to work for the foundation, hadBuck change her will in his favor, and eventually wasaccused of molesting Korean-American boys that he hadthe foundation bring to the U.S. As a result Buck, thenperhaps America’s best-known female author, wasembroiled in a scandal that seriously damaged herprestige. Buck’s children challenged the will, eventuallysettling out of court with Harris, who did retain much ofBuck’s property, including substantial portions of herarchives and manuscripts. An important association copythat illustrated the author’s connection to Harris.#81765 ....... $1000

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX[JOHNSON, John H.]. Negro Digest: AMagazine of Negro Comment [Volumes 1-3; November, 1942 – October, 1944].Chicago: Negro Digest Publishing Company 1942-1944.Three volumes. Thick octavos. Bound with all wrappersin green buckram titled in gilt. Boards a trifle rubbed, some wrappers a bit soiled, edges of a few wrappers alittle closely trimmed with negligible loss, still near fine. The first three years of this influential and importantdigest, which was the foundation of the JohnsonPublishing empire. In addition to excerpting articles byand about African-Americans from other publications, there was also much original content written expressly forthe magazine. The contributors read like a who's who ofblack writers of the time: Langston Hughes, WalterWhite, George S. Schuyler, Roland Hayes, Horace MannBond, Roi Ottley, and that's just the first issue. Alsoincluded are W.E.B. Du Bois, J. Saunders Redding, MaryMcLeod Bethune, Zora Neale Hurston, Charles S.Johnson, A. Philip Randolph, Richard Wright, MelvilleHerskovits, Rayford Logan, Louis Armstrong, Ann Petry,E. Franklin Frazier, Mr. and Mrs. William Grant Still("Does Interracial Marriage Succeed?"), W.C. Handy, RoyWilkins, Benjamin E. Mays, Satchel Paige, Rev. AdamClayton Powell, Sr., Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., BenjaminQuarles, Paul Robeson, Eslande Goode Robeson, DukeEllington, Arna Bontemps, E. Simms Campbell, FrankYerby, Mercer Cook, Charles H. Wesley, Edwin R.Embree, and many lesser lights. Among the white writerswho contribute (usually, but not always, writing onsubjects of interest to African-Americans) are ShirleyJackson (preceding her first book by a few years), CarlSandburg, Joseph Mitchell, Earl Conrad, Bucklin Moon,Barney Nagler, Ernie Pyle, Eleanor Roosevelt, DaltonTrumbo, Dorothy Parker, John R. Tunis, Pearl S. Buck,Orson Welles, Woody Gutherie (a condensation of*Bound for Glory*), Ernie Harwell, Frank Sinatra,Edward G. Robinson, and Humphrey Bogart. Afascinating line-up of notables, and an interesting lookinto the psyche of the race during wartime. Presumablynot that many copies of this digest would have beenprinted during wartime; reportedly the first issue wasprinted in a run of only 3,000 copies. Early issues are veryuncommon. #299786 ....... $3,000
