Why are BTEC Nationals changing?BTEC Nationals prepare many students each year for progression to Higher Education (HE) programmes, in fact UCAS has reported that the proportion of 18 year-olds in England entering HE with a BTEC has more than doubled between 2008 and 2014. The Higher Education Statistics Agency also confirmed that the number of UK students entering HE with a combination of BTEC and A levels increased nearly four-fold in the same period.

So to ensure BTECs continue to support progression into Higher Education, we have developed new BTEC Nationals for students starting their courses in September 2016. After over two years working closely with HE, professional bodies and industry, we are confident these new qualifications are fit for purpose, delivering university applicants with the right balance of research skills, professional behaviours and up-to-date industry knowledge.

Unit title What will students study? Assessment

1. Media Representations

This unit provides an introduction to fundamental media theory and analysis. Students investigate a range of media from different sectors, such as music videos, short film extracts, animation, news programmes, websites, digital games and print adverts in order to explore how meaning, messages and values are constructed through formal and stylistic elements. They develop an understanding of semiotic analysis and the ‘reading’ of media texts. The assessment is by an on-screen examination. Students view a video clip and are asked a series of short and extended answer questions, testing their knowledge and understanding and their analysis and evaluation skills.

Onscreen exam

2. Working in the Creative Media Industry

In this unit, students learn about the structure of the media industry and the career opportunities within its various sectors. They investigate a specific sector and the job roles it offers, and develop their own profile that will provide a potential employer with information about their skills. They also develop effective networking skills that will help them to create links with potential employers. They develop their job application skills and reflect on career progression or progression through to higher education.

Assignments

3. Digital Media Skills Students learn how to work to a client brief relating to a specific media sector and its associated digital skills. They choose the format and medium for a digital media project and demonstrate their creative and technical skills in the production of a complete product. Through working on the skills required to produce the product, they demonstrate their understanding of production and post-production activities and prepare appropriate documentation to support these.

Task

Mandatory units - a solid foundation for all learnersThe larger core of mandatory content in the new BTEC Nationals means that you can be confident that BTEC-qualified students are well prepared for higher level study and assessment methods.

This table breaks down the mandatory unit content and explains what the students learn and which skills they develop.

4. Pre-production Portfolio

Students consider the essential pre-production work that takes place as part of a creative media pro-duction. They develop:• an understanding of the requirements of the planning stage of a media product, from finance and

logistics to regulations• the pre-production skills and experience needed to carry out tasks to produce a digital media

product. For the assessment, students create a portfolio and manage the pre-production for their own creative media production.

Assignments

5. Specialist Subject investigation

In this unit, students explore a range of primary and secondary research methods and techniques. They then apply these in the assessment which will require them to focus on a contemporary specialist media issue or debate that is the subject of existing research and to undertake investigations into it. They contextualise their findings in a chosen media sector. They analyse and interpret data, draw conclusions from their research findings and evaluate the validity and reliability of their work.

Task

6. Media Campaigns In this unit, students consider why and how media campaigns are created, including• their distinguishing features• the strategies used to reach their audience• how the many different elements in a campaign are constructed to ensure cohesion when viewed

across different media platforms• how they are successful in communicating their message

For the assessment, students plan a media campaign, preparing materials and developing strategies to achieve its purpose. They develop production skills through the creation of a cross-platform media campaign.

Assignment

8. Responding to a Commission

In this unit, students develop an understanding of how to interpret a commission brief and respond to it with ideas based on the required content, style, audience, purpose and approach proposed by the client. In the assessments, students are given a choice of commissions. They work within the requirements and constraints of the client’s specifications and consider their response in terms of ethos, format, budget, platform and duration. Students demonstrate their ideas through pitches, proposals and treatment documents.
