Assignment Work
Units 2, 3 and 5 are assessed internally through assignment tasks that are mainly written in nature.
There are usually 3 assignments per unit, made up of a number of smaller tasks.
Assignments will be designed so that students produce work that meets compulsory assessment criteria.
Some tasks will therefore target pass criteria, other tasks target merit criteria and finally there will also be a small number of distinction criteria.
Assignment Work – Cont.
Students can use their notes, textbooks, resource sheets and the internet to complete assignment work (and we want them to!); they do not have to rely on memory.
Students will be fully prepared and supported by their teachers before they undertake these tasks.
Assignment Work – Cont.
There is no set amount of time that students are limited to on these tasks HOWEVER there are clear deadlines for them. Students can work on them in school and in their own time but the work must be their own. They are usually completed on a computer.
If work does not meet the assessment criteria at the first attempt students will be given a second chance to achieve.
Assignment Work – Example criteria
from unit 5.2A.P1 Describe ways in which the musculoskeletal system responds to short-term exercise.
2A.M1 Explain responses of the musculoskeletal system to short-term exercise.
2A.D1 Using three different sports activities, compare and contrast how the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems respond and adapt to exercise.
There are actually 5 pass, 5 merit and 2 distinction criteria for the whole of this unit.
Assignment Work – Cont.
The great thing about the assignment work is that it builds up points towards the final grade along the course so that results are not dependent on one final exam performance.
They allow for students to off set a possible poor exam performance with over achievement on the internal assessments to ensure success on the course overall.
Assignment Work – Cont.
Students are successful at assignment work if:
They are able to manage their time well.
They are organised with all the preparation work and resources provided so that they have what they need to hand when the assignment goes live.
They are in school for all the preparation and completion sessions.
They recognise the importance of these tasks and prioritise them.
External Exam. The exam is a challenging test which traditionally students find difficult.
They are allowed ONE re-sit if the first result is not satisfactory. This may incur a charge to parents.
Students entitled to access arrangements for a specific educational need are able to have the same provision for this on-line exam.
Students do not sit the same set of questions as other students in the same cohort but will have a paper that is made up from a bank of different questions.
GradesThe grades for the course as a whole range from unclassified, level 1 pass, level 2 pass, merit, distinction and distinction*
Each individual unit is assessed at either unclassified, level 1 pass, level 2 pass, merit and distinction. (There is no D* on individual units).
To get a pass on a unit ALL pass criteria must be achieved. To get a merit, all pass and ALL merit criteria must be achieved. To get a distinction, all pass, all merit and ALL distinction criteria must be achieved.

Who should take this course
Any student with a love of sport and the areas associated with sport performance regardless of their sporting ability.
Any students who is prepared to work hard for the whole two years.
Any student who will be happy performing physically in a mixed gender environment.
Who should NOT take this
courseAny student who thinks that this will be a chance just to play football (rugby, basketball…) constantly in lessons.
Any student who thinks this is an ‘easy option’ choice.
Any student who doesn’t like writing. It is a course with a small amount of practical but much more writing
Additional Note:The course underwent minor changes for the cohort starting in 2018 so if you have another child who studied it a few years ago it is slightly different now. There is no leadership unit and unit 3 (applying the principles of personal training) is a compulsory unit that we now have to deliver.
The exam has also changed slightly so that it is longer, worth more marks and can only be re-sat once.
There is also a very small addition to the coursework task for one assignment in unit 2.
