Big Sandy Spring FestivalThe 42nd Annual Big Sandy Spring Festival is set for Friday and Saturday in and around downtown Big Sandy and the Park. The carnival will run Friday from 5-10pm and its $10 armbands to ride all the rides. Also Friday evening the Tennessee River Band will perform from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Saturday is full of events including a Car Show around City Hall with registration at 8am and awards at 3pm. The parade is at 10am. There will also be a petting zoo, the carnival starts at 11am, a horseshoe tournament, BINGO, and musical talent throughout the day. The festival ends with a Me-morial Day Fireworks Celebration at 9:30pm. For more information contact the Big Sandy Community Chamber.

(NewsUSA) - When consumers fill their tanks at the gas station, they will see signs reading “may contain 10 percent Ethanol. However, many don’t know what this means or how it can affect their engine per-formance. Ethanol-blended fuel has become standard in the United

States, and the Environmental Protection Agency recently mandated an increase in the amount of ethanol added to fuel;, meaning, it is even more important that consumers understand the pros and cons of Ethanol.

Ethanol is a bio-fuel distilled from

corn and sugar that has many benefits, including reducing greenhouse emis-sions and lowering the cost of fuel at the pump.

However, ethanol-blended fuel can also have negative side effects on your car, boat and small engines, such as lawnmowers and snowblowers, over

time. Some signs that ethanol is af-fecting your en-gine’s performance include:

* Efficiency: Ethanol-blended fuel’s lower energy efficiency may re-duce fuel economy of your engine.

* Stalling: Ethanol can cause engine stalling if the water in the ethanol separates from the gasoline and floods the engine. This problem is most likely in engines that sit unused for long periods of time.

* Corrosion: Etha-nol can contribute to corrosion of fuel tanks and other components, and the risk is even

greater with small engines with alumi-num parts.

* Clogging: Ethanol can loosen debris in the fuel line that leads to clogs.

Fortunately, there are several easy things you can do to help protect your engine from ethanol-related side effects.

Treatment: Using a non-alcohol based fuel stabilizer and treat-ment product, such as STA-BIL 360 Performance, can help protect gas-powered engines. A stabilizer may be especially beneficial for engines that sit for long periods without starting. Stabilizers are

designed to absorb the excess water that may be present if ethanol begins to separate from gaso-line and protect the insides of the fuel tank and parts.

Turn it on: Start up your stored clas-sic car, boat and seasonal equip-ment, such as lawn mowers or snow blowers a few times during the off-season months to make sure they are running smoothly.

Tank it up: Cars, lawn mow-ers, snow blowers, boats, and other gasoline-powered tools and vehicles should keep their tanks at 95 percent full with fuel, and add a fuel stabilizer if they are to sit unused for a long time. This strat-

egy helps prevent condensation while allowing room for expansion in warm-er weather.

Trust your source: Buy fuel from a reputable gas station. A sta-tion with a quick turnover of their products helps ensure that the gasoline is fresh.

Test the lines: Rubber fuel lines dating from before the mid-1980’s should be in-spected. These lines may not be compatible with ethanol-blended fuel, and may need to be replaced.

Soft obstacles: When you plan to tackle sand, snow,

or mud, deflate your tires to im-prove your trac-tion by decreasing the tire footprint. Maintain momen-tum, and if your wheels start spin-ning in the sand or snow, ease off the gas a bit. In mud, keep the wheels spinning to help clear the mud from the tires.

Hard obstacles: When you ap-proach large rocks, logs, or ditches during off-road driving, take them at an angle, so only one tire engages the obstacle and the other three remain on level ground to maximize traction. Place one tire on the obstacle, then

drive over it slowly to help protect the underside of your vehicle.

Hills: Always have an escape plan in case your trek doesn’t turn out as expected. However, you can increase your odds of safely taking on hills by approach-ing them straight on for maximum traction to all four tires. Use the high-

est gear possible to comfortably take the hill.

Once a month, or before heading on a long road trip, check your tires for wear and damage using “the penny test.” Just grab a penny and select a point on your tire where tread

appears the low-est. Then, holding Lincoln’s body be-tween your thumb and your forefinger, place Lincoln’s head into one of the grooves. If any part of Abe Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, you’re driving with the legal and safe amount of tread.

However, if all of Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s a sign that it is time to get new tires.

“Traction and tread are inextricably linked. The grooves in your tire are critical in helping to channel water away to allow the tire to grip the road,” says Sarah Robinson, Michelin safety expert. “Making sure you’re driving on tires with proper tread can be the difference between avoiding an acci-dent, and becoming part of it.”

If it’s time to get new tires, consider these two factors first and foremost:

1. Safety: Most tires perform well in everyday situa-tions, but difficult conditions will reveal their differ-ences. Choose tires that can perform well in the worst types of weather or roads you encoun-ter. For example, if you live in a region with regular heavy

snowfall and cold winters, consider winter tires for part of the year. The difference can be huge.

2. Value: It’s im-portant to remem-ber that not all tires are created equal. Tires may seem like an additional expense on top of general car maintenance, but investing in qual-ity tires known for long-lasting perfor-

(StatePoint) As more consumers turn to online sites and social media to find deals on used cars from private party sell-ers, experts warn that buyers should beware.

“Private sellers often offer some of the best deals avail-able on used cars, but these transac-tions may also bear a certain amount of risk,” says John Rasmussen, Wells Fargo’s head of Personal Lending Group.

Over 707,000 mo-tor vehicles were reported stolen in the United States in 2015, according to the FBI, a 3.1 percent rise over 2014. A portion of these vehicles are resold to consum-ers like you, which can mean problems down the line.

Consumers who buy a stolen car run the risk of the vehicle impound-ment and troubles with the insurance agency should the car be involved in an accident. You may also find it virtually impos-sible to get your money back on the purchase.

To avoid this fate, Wells Fargo Direct Auto loan experts

are sharing some smart tips.

• Know your ve-hicle. This means doing more than just a test drive. Find out the vehi-cle history by using online resources like Carfax. Have a mechanic look at the vehicle.

• Know the seller. Do your best to make sure the seller is who they say they are and

that their name appears on the title and paperwork. Any person try-ing to sell a car on behalf of someone else is a red flag.

• Know your op-tions. Is the seller requiring that you pay cash? Be wary. That is a red flag, too.

• Know the paper-work. Car thieves often replace the Vehicle Identifica-

tion Number (VIN) from the stolen car with one that belongs to a legally registered vehicle. This process, which is known as “VIN cloning” or “retagging,” allows car thieves to cover up the car’s true history and forge title documents. Be sure to check that all the VINs

located throughout the car (dashboard, driver door, under the hood) match each other and the paperwork.
