In closing, I would like to say a s pecia l word of thanks to our past president, Mrs. Belva Counts. Her wonderful attitude of teamwork , helpfulness, and consideration rhas made my job so much easier.

THE BOOTHE FAMILY OF FLOYD COUNTY, VIRGI NIA

by George Pesely *

George Boothe (1737-1813) and .his wife Millie settled in Mon tgomery County, Virginia (the parent count y of Floyd Co.), s hortl y before 1787. Their known children are Isaac, Millie, George Jr., Abijah, Daniel, and Tamar.

For many years Millie Boothe's maiden name has incorrectly been thought to be Carroll. I recently found a query by a John T. Booth of Wyoming, Ohio, in the NEW ENGLAND HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER for 1877 which reads in part: 11 I find one George Booth who is said to have married a Millie Wright or Rite, and with a brother Stephen lived in or near Rye, Westchest~r Co. , N. Y •• . • From Rye, N. Y. , he moved to Montgomery Co . , Va." (vol . 31, p. 225). The maiden name Wright is confirmed by the name of 8 grandson, Wright Boothe.

Stephen Boothe lived for some years in Montgomery Co. before moving to the "north side of Clinch mountain" in Russell Co. , Va. , where he died in 1815. His will names his wife, Nancy, and his children William,' Jerutia (Elkins), Anny (Bishop), Rachel (Dickson) , Stephen, James, and Joseph, and the widow of his son David (VIRGI NIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY, 1927, vol . 35, p. 196). The marriage records of Montgomery Co., Va., include the marriages of Elijah Elkins and Jerusha Booth (daughter of Stephen and Nancy Booth), Nov. 28, 1789; George Bishop and Nancy Booth (daughter of Stephen and Nancy Booth), June 28, 1790; James Dixon and Rachel Boothe (Stephe n Boothe, witness), Dec. 11, 1799; and Stephen Boothe and Polly Boothe (no parents' names), Jan. 1, 1799 .

John T. Booth had been in .contact with descendants either of George or of Stephen Boothe, and commented that "his descendants think he came direct from England, bu\ are not positive."

This point has not yet been resolved. It is possible that George and Stephen Boothe were descended from earlier soothes i n that part of New York, or they may have been related to the numerous Booths of nearby Fairfield Co., Conn. A Richard Booth settled at Stratford in that county in 1639. By one tradition this Richard Booth was a close relative of the Earls of Warringt~n (NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD, 1901, vol. 32, p. 240).

In 1867 some descendants of George Boothe living in Lawrence Co. , Ohio, formed an association to investigate their legal heirship to an estate reportedly left them by their ancestors in England (IRONTON JOURNAL, Sept. 18, 1867; contributed by Robert M. Willis). The outcome of this investigation is not known.

Re portedly a barrister from England came to Floyd Co. and to ld the Soothes there of their supposed estate in England. Possibly this is what inspired the investigation by the Boothe descendants in Lawrence Co . , Ohio . In any event, stories were current in the late 19th c entury telling why George Boothe had come to America.

Th e basic version of the story is that, at the age of 12 or 14, George Boothe was with some boys who were showing off their strength . George moved a stone which happened to be a landmark or a cornerstone to a piece of property. For this deed he was liable to th e death penalty, and so he was sent to America, either secretly or because of the King's clemency.

In t~e more elaborate versions of the story, George is said ta have been the son of Sir George Booth, second Earl of Warrington, and to have li ved for some years with Booth relatives in Gloucester Co., Va. In fact, Sir George Booth (1675- 1758) had only one child, a daughter, and there is no reliable evidence that the Booths of Gloucester Co. , a prominent family in the Coloniai period, were related to the Soothes of Floyd Co. It should be borne in mind that there was a great interest in 19th- century America in rumors of estates in England which were being held in abeyance or which had passed to false claimants b e c ause the rightful heirs in America were unable to prove their claim. So there may be nothing of substance behind the legends about George Boothe.

According to Olivia Simmons Keesee (1870-1944), the first descendant of George Boothe to join the DAR, George Boothe was born in Sandwich, Kent, England. In 1980 I was able to examine a complete transcript of the Sandwich parish records, kept at Maidstone, Kent. There was no George Boothe listed. Curiously enough, some of Millie Boothe's ancestors may have lived for a time in Sandwich, Mass. Per haps that is the o r igin of that detail.

The will of Danie l Wright o f the Manor of Cortlandt, Westchester Co., N.Y., writ ten i n 1777 (with a codicil dated 1781), mentions "the land which I purchased of George Booth" (New York Historical Society, Collections , vol. 33, p . 240 ) . One of Daniel Wright's daughters was named "Miloson" (Millicent) . Quite possibly Millie Boothe was a sister of this Daniel Wright. Daniel Wright uses the Quaker dating formula . Probably both Daniel and Millie were descended from the Wright s of Oyste r Bay, N. Y., wh ich is across the Long Island Sound from Rye. These Wrights had come from Sandwich, Mass., in 1653, and were prominen t Quakers ( see ''Th e Wright Family of Oyster Bay, L.l.," NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD, 1872, vol. 3, pp. 35-45). There was considerable e migration from the Oyster Bay area to Westchester Co. Isaac Boothe's first wife was named Freelove, and Oyster Bay is one of the few places where this name was common.

Beginning in 1787, George Boothe acqui red more than 1300 acres in Montgomery Co. (See Netti Schreiner-Yantis , MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VIRG I NI A --CIRCA 1790.) He is list ed in the 1810 census of Montgomery Co . , and he was still alive in March 1813 (Montgomery Co . De eds, Book E , 341) • Millie Boothe is last found in Janua r y 1815 when she was a witness t o a marriage. Both George and . Mi ll ie Boothe a r e said to be buried in the Simmons Cemetery in Floyd Co. Mrs . Linvi l G. Rich made a thoro u g h search of this cemetery in 19 75 but found no gravestones earlier tha n 1866 still legible.

Col. Lucian D. Booth's book, DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE BOOTHE, 1737- 1813 , MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VIRGINIA (1948), l ists more t ha n 1200 descendants and contains a great deal of valua ble informa t ion o n many lines. There are copies in the Roanoke Public Library, the Virginia State Library (Richmond), and the Los Angeles Public Li br ary . Col . Boo th lists 11 childr en of George Boothe : I saac, Geor ge, Permelia ( Mi l li e ) , Abijah, Daniel, Elizabeth, Wright Stephen, Elisha, Ne 111 e, and Ri lay. Of these, Elisha was actually a B~wma n , Nel l ie was a S i mmon s , and Riley was the son of George H. Boothe , a grandson o f t he first George Boothe. I have not been able to c onfi rm Elizabeth, Wri g h t , o r S t ephen· The marriage record of Thoma s Ashley a nd Rut h Ka rn ( Montgome r y Co . , Va . , Aug. 21, 1797) shows her as a daughte r of George Boothe . Either s he was a young widow or (more likely) an err or was made whe n the r e cor ds were recopied. The Polly Boothe who marri e d Step he n Boo th e in 1799 is another possible daughter . Co l. Charlott e Co., VA - Deed Book 12, Page 207:

Whereas I Mary Palmer of the County of Charlotte do hereby for myself Confess tha t from the hurry of passion without reflection I did say imprudently words going to the injury an d Slander of Elizabeth Rackerby which words were in amount that Luke Palmer my husband had acts of intimacy and improper Connection with her the said Elizabeth Rackerby. Now I do Confess that I said so without evidence to justify the Speach, and for which I am truly sorry, and ask the pardon of her the said Elizabeth Rackerby. I will just mention as one cause by which I made the charge towit, an unhappy diference seemed to exist between myself & my dear husband, he seemed to associate at Mrs. Rackerbys & in my passions on that subject, I said without evidence the thing now going to Mrs . BOOK REVIEWS

THE SALYER FAMILY

by Eli zabeth L. WL Salyer

This is a history of the Sa],yers/Sallier family ln America ~ince 1655. The immigrant ancestor is thought to have been of French extraction , it has not been determined how his name may have originally been spelled . The history includes information from original court records , personally researched by the author, explanation and documentation of records , old family pictures , reproduction of original documents , confirmation of a name change , lineages numbered and cross-referenced and interesting stories about early ancestors.

The Colonial era Salyers were located in New York , New Jersey , Chowan County, N. C. and other western N. C, counties . It seems from a ll records that descendants of Zachariah Salyer, Sr. of N. C. went into parts of Southwestern Virginia by 1780. These were Isiah Salyer Sr. of Russell Co , Va , John Salyer of Scott Co , Va , Zachariah Salyer Jr of Scott Co , Va , Martin Dunn Salyer of Lincoln Co, Ky , Benjamin Salyer of Harlan Co , Ky , Sarah Salyer Saylor of Harlan Co, Ky , and Rebecca Salyer Kilgore of Marion Co , TN.

In 1787 Isiah Salyer (1752-1818) settled on Copper Creek in Russell co , Va. His brothers , John , Benjamin , and Zachariah; sisters , Sarah, wife of Solomon Saylor, and Rebecca , wife of Stephen Kilgore , settled on nea rby land. The Salyers intermarried wi th Virginia peioneer families - Castle , Isaacs , Nickels , Stapleton , Vicars and Byerley , Recently , November 16, 1982 , an historic marker honoring Isiah Salyer was erected on Virginia Highway 71, Russell County by the Virginia Department of Hig hways and Transportation. Kermit w Salyer of Roanoke , a great, great , great grands on of I siah Salyer requested the marker, and provided proof of the data , with the help of Elizabeth Salyer of West Palm Beach, Fla, and Dr Howard Salyer of Nashville , Tenn.

A review of thi s book can in no way show the outstanding reference done on the many families represented, The book has a hard cover, 688 pages , and is completely indexed. A gift copy from the author has been placed in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke City Public Library . The price of the book is $51. 00 and may be ordered from Mrs . Elizabeth K. Salyer, 734 Ardmore Road, West Palm Beach, Florida J.3401.

(Note: The historic marker noted above is located at Grassy Creek Church , between Dickensonville and Nickelsville . )

A DOWNEY AND CRAWFORD ANCESTRY

by

Roy H. Downey

Both the Downey and Crawford Families are traced from Ireland to Pennsylvania, arriving in Virginia as early as 1700 in the areas of Alleghaney, Augusta, Botetourt, Craig and Roanoke Counties. The Downeys were a part of establishing the iron works that were located in Alleghany County and were called the Longdale Mines , quarry or furnace Downeys.

The book is a complete genealogy of John Edward Downey born Feb. 29, 1864, son of Archibald J. Downey (1831-1913) and Mary Jane Craft Downey (1832-1903), who married Elizabeth "Betty " Crawford on July 7 , 1885 in Covington, Va. by the Rev. A.F. Chapman, pastor of Covington Baptist Church . Elizabeth Crawford was born Aug. 1, 1867 and was the daughter of John J. Crawford (1836-1878) and Eliza Jane Martin Crawford (1835-1878).
