ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS!
Sunset over
Barrenjoey Lighthouse
As we draw to the end of term two, the upcoming two week break will be approached in many
different ways by both students and families alike.
School holidays are usually an opportunity for children and families to relax and have a break.
For some, school holidays can be a big change in routine that need consideration and planning.
While others will spend the time revising, completing major works and assessment tasks with
the knowledge there are only ten weeks of school remaining before HSC examinations
commence.
With all of that extra time at home, below is an article by Paula Sinclair, Adolescent and Family
Counsellor at KYDS Youth Development Service, regarding Connecting with Teenagers.
When communicating with teens, it is important to avoid disconnectors:
• Avoid closed questioning. Instead, make statements to share and open up conversation.
To gather information, ask open-ended questions (eg “What happened at school today?”).
Ask yourself “What do I really want to know?”
• Don’t lecture. Allow time for them to respond to any comments you make.
• Avoid interruptions, as well as instructions, opinions, views and advice.
• Don’t solve their problems. Help them to find a solution through problem solving.
In order to build connection:
• Be entirely present, ensuring your teen feels special.
• Be genuinely interested and curious even if what they are saying is difficult to hear. Stay
focussed on the topic.
• Be open and honest. Check your body language reflects this.
• Practice active listening (concentrate, understand, respond and remember what is being
said). Repeat what they say in your own words to ensure you have understood. Ask for
clarification if needed.
• Be empathetic. Try and enter their world to see what it feels like for them.
• Control your own feelings while validating theirs. Reassure them that it is okay to have
those feelings (even if you don’t agree with them). Validation helps them to feel accepted,
heard, understood, and connected. Help them to name their emotions.
Parenting can be hard
work, and maintaining
strong connections with
your teenagers can be challenging.
ENJOY THE TWO WEEK BREAK – USE YOUR TIME WISELY
Remember, disagreements are okay. They help to develop negotiation and conflict resolution
skills. The important thing is to keep the emotions under control, and to keep communication
going!
Remember Monday 17th July is a Staff Development Day. All teaching staff will be at Pittwater
High School participating in a combined PCS staff development opportunity with Professor John
Fischetti (Head of School at Newcastle University, School of Education).
I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff and the community for the wonderful way we
all work together to support all students, and each other, at Barrenjoey.
Wishing you all a happy and safe Semester break………………..Jeff Brown

Year 8 recently went to the
International Convention Centre in
Sydney to the Stand Tall Event. This
event inspires High School Students
to stand tall and make positive
choices. Over 2000 students attended
this wonderful day to listen to
inspirational speakers who powerfully
address many of the critical issues
confronting today’s High School
Students. Click on the links below to
read about these inspirational
speakers who attended the event.
The ‘Stand Tall Event 2017’ was a very fun, entertaining and inspirational experience that Year 8
were lucky enough to attend. The Stand Tall Event this year focused on the concept of hope,
and how our generation should believe in and work hard to follow our dreams to have a
successful future.
We listened to guest speakers Glen Gerreyn (inspirational speaker and author), Talitha
Cummins (News Reader for Channel 7), Aminata Conteh-Biger (refugee from Sierra Leone),
Derek Rabelo (Brazilian blind surfer), Andrew Edmonson (Rio Olympics Rugby Wheelchair star),
Eloise Wellings (Rio Olympics Track star), Poppy Starr (World Champion Skateboarder) and
even Cyrus (winner of the X Factor)! They all spoke well and told us about their pasts and the
struggles they had to overcome in order to achieve their goals and dreams. They all had very
different background stories, yet each of them talked to us about the same key idea; hope.
I found it to be a very inspirational and motivational experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I
would definitely recommend it to other students.
YEAR 8 STAND TALL EVENT 2017
By Elise Inger
As we got to the Convention Centre we entered
the theatre and were greeted by a band preforming
songs and music to start our day. We then listened
to some incredible, inspirational speakers with
heaps of stories to tell.
They were all about overcoming addictions,
surviving abuse and being a sex slave, reaching
dream goals, living with disabilities and achieving
the impossible. It was all very touching and
moving. Personally, I loved hearing all the inspiring
stories about overcoming hard times and changing
into the person they are today. All this was
followed with a final performance to wrap it up by
Cyrus (the X Factor winner). Overall it was an
amazing experience which I recommend for future students. By Madison Thomas

ARTIST OF THE WEEK
Winter Tides by Jacinta Rogers
Body shudders from icy mist
Teeth chatter as white clouds are exhaled
Feet sprint across blades of emerald and grains
of broken shells
Hands grip the rails of fiberglass
Board flies over frothy whitewash
Torso lands on wax
Arms dig in and stretch back pulling cold
morning milk
Eyes red glassed over by the bitter salt spray
Cheeks pierced by shattered glass
Flesh frozen by the winter tides
The sun catches fire on the horizon
Dancing on waves of molten gold
Painting lines on a blank canvas
Ripping into a fresh silk wall
Carving sculptures from melted ice
Sheltering from inside the green room
Arms dig in and pull back the cold afternoon milk
Feet grip wax
Hands grip rails
Tucked under a sheet of glass
Heading towards the white light
Spat out from the barrel Into the sun’s last strike
Eumerella; valley of plenty,
Watch dandelions dance,
Fireweed the poison to brumby,
Golden maidens at first glance.
Stones are skipped and ripples drawn,
The water a reflective canvas,
Frost the veil of early dawn,
His footprint stands timeless.
Damp logs spit and hiss and whistle,
A descant to the fire’s slow-burning song,
Horses graze the untamed thistle,
Nostrils flared; steamy breath blown
strong.
Dewy speckles adorn kangaroo paw,
A serendipitous sketch,
Trails of dusty wombat spoor,
Before her softened silhouette.
Eumerella; valley of plenty, A place to savour your every memory.

DEBATING TEAM
It is has been an exciting term of Debating with our Year 9 and 10 Debating Team who
participated in the Premier's Debating Challenge. Our two teams competed in three rounds with
Turramurra High School. Our topics covered sport, education and politics.
Our Barrenjoey team worked feverishly to develop their structure and arguments. Team work
was a core component of successful debate and our teams were fantastic at pulling together a
cohesive argument on difficult topics such as 'Our States should be abolished'.
It cannot be under estimated how challenging it is to develop arguments under timed, public
speaking conditions, and our teams did an absolutely amazing job representing our school.

MATHS WEEKLY PUZZLE TO PONDER
ANSWER TO LAST WEEKS PUZZLE
Every alternate week the Maths staff will pose a
mathematical puzzle to ponder with a syllabus reference
and degree of difficulty (1 to 5 compasses) will be
supplied.
The solution will be provided in the next week’s issue.
OBTUSE ANGLES
Mr Seymour’s Weekly Science Fact!
This week’s question:
Julius has a strange code. It turns some numbers into other numbers. When his friend says ‘five’ Julius says ‘four!’ When his friend says ‘six’, Julius says ‘nine!’ When his friend says ‘nine’, Julius says ‘one!’ What’s going on? Can you work out what Julius would say when his friend says 12?
* Syllabus reference: Stage 4: MA4-2WM
There is about 120 000 million million million gas molecules in each breath of
air that we inhale. Over time these molecules, which are then exhaled, spread
throughout the atmosphere. We normally take about 12-14 breaths per minute,
or about 500 million breaths (60 nonillion molecules – 60 followed by a further
30 zeros) in an average lifetime. You can be quite sure that every breath you
take contains a molecule that was once breathed out by Albert Einstein (or
Charlie Chaplin or even that last dinosaur to roam the Earth).
BAND NEWS
The Concert Band completed a major performance last Sunday at the Northern Beaches
Instrumental Festival. Our conductor, Josh Hughes, received much favourable commentary from
other Band Directors on the quality of our performance.
As usual, our Band really stepped up to perform their repertoire with energy and enthusiasm; and
the soloists landed all their contributions. A great night for us and much to look forward to in
second semester.
WANTED: Percussionists and Bass Guitar.
Whilst anyone who plays an instrument is invited to join Band, we have particular vacancies at the
moment for Percussion players and a Bass Guitar.
Send us an email at [email protected]; come and check us out at rehearsals; or
talk to Layne Visser, our school liaison teacher.
