Barry and Lorraine Dean have recently returned from a fantastic holiday in the Cook Islands. Apart from the spectacular scenery, the warm weather, and the friendly locals a Bowls Carnival was the feature of our trip. It was an amazing opportunity to play carnival bowls in paradise at the Rarotonga Bowls Club. It is just a part of the spectacular Te Maeva Nui Festival.

The fifty visiting Bowlers from New South Wales, Queensland and 'The Deans" from Victoria par-ticipated in the Te Maeva Nui Float Parade through Avarua Township. “Te Maeva Nui” is the Cook Islands’ most important annual event as it celebrates their Independence.

A highlight of the tour and finale for the Bowls Carnival participants, was an exclusive Polynesian theme night hosted by the Rarotonga Bowls Club, with amazing food, a lively, colourful perform-ance by a local school dance group and a live band.

An Hawaiian Bowls Tour is on the drawing board for 2015

Ray and Mirella Canny spent quality time with their friends in Lewes Delaware, U.S.A.

Ray was over the moon when he had use of the one rink bowling green.

“Just let David the coach back home know that I am keeping in with the practice” said Ray.

“Delaware is State no.1 in the US and a number of large corporations have located to Delaware due to their no State taxes. After a 3 1/2 hour drive we arrived at our friends home in Lewes Dela-ware which was located in a lovely seaside community and we spent 3 enjoyable days in their company visiting local sites and as the area is famous for its seafood we had seafood each day.”

Club Championship Rules

Entry sheets for each individual event shall be placed on the notice board well in advance of any championship game.

A $5 entry fee for each individual player in any game shall be placed in an envelope; clearly marked with

the name or names of the players and the relevant event, and then placed in the locked money box,

located below the entry sheets. If it is a team event then the one envelope for that team would be appre-

ciated.

The entry fee/s for any game must be paid before the closing date for the relevant game or the team or

singles player in the championships shall be excluded from the draw.

Club uniform (as for pennant) must be worn for all championship games. Failure to do so will mean for-

feiture.

When a game is to be played then notice of such must be entered on the chalk games board before the

day of play with the names of the players, the name of the event and the date and time it is expected to

be played. The Greenkeeper (his deputy); the Greens Director or a member of the Match Committee shall

allocate the rink number for the game you are to play.

If a game cannot be started within a half hour after the scheduled starting time and in a team event a

substitute from a member not playing in that event, but eligible to do so and is not available, then the

game shall be forfeit by the offending player/team. A substitute shall be excused from wearing Club uni-

form only if they are a last minute inclusion in the team.

The Match Committee shall be the sole arbitrator should there be any questions about any Club Champ-

ionship event.

David Odgers, (club Coach) made it loud and clear

on Opening Day that he’d like all Pennant Players to

attend all 4 four practice matches. “There will be

new procedures introduced this coming season!”

In the 4 practice games the 2nds will be doing the score cards and recording what the positions are at change over.

With the 1, 2, and 3 scoring system it will be easier to see who is the weaker link in a rink that continues to be loosing.

“It needs everyone’s help.”

Once more (possibly our 14th trip) the might of the Keilor Bowls Club headed north across the Murray River, for the annual winter carnival bowls tournament at the Tocumwal Bowls Club.

After a change of trailers at Keilor, due to a broken leaf-spring, we departed

later than usual but soon made up for lost time due to our driver - Kenny

McLeod - catching every available tail wind and some remarkably smooth

gear changes! A bigger bus will be needed next year, the event is so popular.

After a pit stop at Nagambie, where Ron Thompson was the only one on the

bus NOT to see Black Caviar, we reached Tocumwal just in time to grab a

counter lunch at the local pub. Following a hearty breakfast at the Kings-

wood Motel, we made the trek across the road on Saturday morning for the

tournament's Men's Three Bowls Pairs. Success was to follow on and off the

greens as the Keilor boys took the lion's share of the lunch- and tea-time raf-

fles and a big chunk of the prize money. The winning rink for the day com-

prised Tom Lingford and Fred Donaldson, with Joe Watkins and Leo Mobilio,

runners-up, just a few points behind.

During the weekend, we were well looked-after by the new proprietors of the

Kingswood Motel , Andrea and Mark. If anyone from the Club goes up that

way, we recommend that you call in and see what they have to offer, you'll

be pleasantly surprised. Barry Lane was excited to show off a Keilor Bowls

cap which is permanently mounted on the wall for all to see. Bernie Copal

built a great bonfire that many sat around “dribbling” until well past mid-

night. The highlight of our return journey home were the trophies and prizes

which were handed out on the bus at Nagambie.

1. Best Keilor Rink went to Tom and Fred, with Joe and Leo as runners-up.

2. Best First Game went to Peter Fisher and Winston Rizzo.

3. Best Second Game went to Neil Stephenson and Robert Temple, and

4. Best Third Game went to Paul McCallum and Dan Gavaghan.

Our "Ran-up-the-white-flag" Award went to our esteemed barman, Arnie Thomsen and his partner on the

green, Barry Lane. Biggest money winner Paul McCallum who cleaned up on the giant club raffle.

Our most prestigious award for the weekend, "Bro's P***pot" Award, went to ****** ********.

Your correspondent is unable to name the winner of this award due to the old adage, "What Goes On

On The Trip, Stays On The Trip"......

All in all, another successful Tocumwal bowls trip and thanks must go to the organising committee,

consisting of Ron Thompson, Keith Hinks and Ken McLeod, another sterling job. Well done, lads!

20 of the finest bowlers one would every want

to go away with.
