THE NEXT TWO WEEKS’ EVENTS Concert
Concert by Eliot Fisk, classical guitarist
Monday, October 28 at 7:15 p.m. in Penn Hall
The illustrious Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia once wrote, “I consider Eliot Fisk as one of the most brilliant, intelligent and gifted young musical artists of our times.” Eliot Fisk was the last direct pupil of Andrés Segovia and also studied with Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale University. Following his own graduation, he founded the guitar department at the Yale School of Music. He is a professor at the Universität Mozarteum, in Salzburg, Austria, and in Boston at the New England Conservatory. In 2006 he received the “Cruz de Isabel la Católica” from King Carlos of Spain for his service to the cause of Spanish music. Eliiot Fisk’s recital on Monday, October 28, in Penn Hall will be very varied, with works by Bach, Mozart, Sor, and several other Spanish composers.
We Pennswood Village residents were
blessed to have Neva and George in our community. George passed away this year. Perhaps their greatest gift to us was bringing their son Eliot’s artistry to our concert presentations. Eliot Fisk and the Concerts Committee dedicate this program to George's memory.

Resident Art Gallery
The opening of the new show in the Resident Art Gallery, entitled “Artist’s Choice,” will be celebrated with a reception on Sunday, November 3, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. immediately outside the gallery. In calling for art for this show, the committee invited Pennswood’s artists to choose a favorite work of their own making, without following any particular theme.
It is no secret that many artists in various media live at Pennswood. Some have works they made before coming here; some are still working in classes held here or on their own. Come to enjoy what they consider their best work.

Jill
Arrived at Pennswood: August 2019
Jill is the first to admit that “my life has been tumultuous but a lot of fun.” Listening to her describe it, and trying to keep up with all the twists and turns, we have to agree that she has done a lot of things and had a very good time doing them.
Jill’s early years were spent in Pleasantville, NY. She was a boarder at The Beard School in East Orange, New Jersey, and then headed for Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. Only later did she go to SUNY-Albany. Her first job was in Manhattan, where she was a buyer and fashion consultant. One of her first assignments was to cover Fashion Week for Martin Bayer Associates.
One of Jill’s talents has been the ability to work at a range of demanding jobs. It is an interesting talent, and it has led Jill to successful careers as Head Hunter/Recruiter, Human Resources Regional Manager, insurance salesperson, and to becoming a stockbroker at age 49. While she was busy with all this, Jill married three times, had two children, and visited all seven continents. She also found time to volunteer as a
C.A.S.A.(Court Appointed Special Advocate) school volunteer. She acted as a volunteer “ambassador” at the Princeton University Art Museum and as an Elder Hostel ambassador.
Before coming to Pennswood, Jill was active -- on the board and/or on committees -- in three adult communities: Villages of Flowers Mill, Enchantment at Hamilton, and Fairways at Lake Ridge in Lakewood, New Jersey.
Jill plays duplicate bridge. She also likes to paint and is a member of Artists of Yardley, where she participates in classes and open studio. Jill would like us to know that she loves life, loves people and nature and Pennswood.

WORKSHOP On Thursday, November 14, Bucks County Choral Society will hold its semi-annual Senior Singing \Workshop at Foulkeways in Gwynedd. (Their spring workshop was held right here at Pennswood!) This is an all-day event, with participants from many retirement communities and church choirs. Probably 75 people will be in attendance. For those who might wish to attend this workshop, a sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board across from Penn Hall. BCCS needs to order the music for this event in advance, and therefore our registration deadline here at Pennswood is Wednesday, October 30. Please note that for transportation on our bus we are limited to 14 registrants, although anyone else can sign up and drive to Foulkeways on their own. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us who enjoy choral singing. The workshop is a cherished feature every year, occurring in spring right here, and in the fall at our sister institution, Foulkeways.

ARTICLES AND NOTICES
STAFF AND RESIDENT NOTICESMedications & You, Part IICorrection: Please note the authors for this series of Medications and You was incorrect last week. The authors are Noha Eltoukhy
and Jeffrey Gonzales.
Six things you can do to minimize your risks of drug interactions:
1. Pay attention to your labels : warnings are not there to scare you, but to help you make wiser choices about the medicines you take
2. Be consistent where you buy your medications (over the counter and prescription): Most pharmacies have an electronic system they use to fill prescriptions that have safety checks built into it. If you fill all of your prescriptions at one pharmacy, they will have a running record of all the prescribed medications you take.
3. When in doubt, ask a trusted source: While physicians are experts in diagnosing, pharmacists are your medication experts. Both physicians and pharmacists should have access to resources so they can check to make sure your medications are safe to take
together. It’s a good idea to ask your pharmacist to counsel you anytime you begin taking a new medication.
4. Ask if it’s a matter of changing when you take your medications: Did you know that sometimes you can avoid a drug-drug interaction by switching the time you take a medication? For example, some antibiotics cannot be taken with calcium or magnesium pills. In this situation, taking your antibiotic 2 hours before the calcium/magnesium would help to avoid the interaction.
5. Keep an up-to-date log of all the medications (over the counter and prescription) that you take to your appointments and any healthcare visits: Here is a sample list you can use to keep track of all your medications. You can either fill it out on the computer or print it out and fill it in by hand. http://www.safemedication.com/safemed/MyMedicineList/MyMedicineList_1.aspx
6. Be your own advocate (or have someone advocate for you): The more you know about your medications, the less likely you are to experience an unwanted side effect or drug interaction.

FACILITIESDon’t Fall this Fall
As the temperatures begin to decrease, the risk of falling outside begins to increase. It begins in the fall as dewy weather greets us on our morning walks. It will continue through the winter months with snow, sleet and ice to be mindful of.
Tips to stay safe:• Stay on paved surfaces. Avoid walking across
grass; wet leaves also pose a hazard.• Wear proper footwear. Slip-resistant footing
provides extra grip. Ensure shoes fit and are secured properly.
• Look before you leap. Be mindful of all walking surfaces, watch for puddles, wet spots and uneven surfaces. Try to avoid those areas.
• Use lighting. If it is dark, stay on lit paths and bring a flashlight with you.
• Keep one hand free for balance, avoid carrying heavy objects.
• Take your time. Walk at a slow, even pace. • Report unsafe conditions. Call the Main Desk to
report concerns of slippery surfaces and broken lights

Sunday at the Opera One in a series of operas viewed on DVD at Pennswood Zurga —Maius Kwiecien Nadir —Matthew Polenzani Leïla —Diana Damrau Nourabad —Nicolas Testé Conductor —Gianandra Noseda Metropolitan Opera Orchestra & Chorus
Sunday October 27—The Game Room 6:30 PM—3 Acts with 1 Intermission—Ending about 9:00
French composer Georges Bizet died early (age 37), as did Mozart (36) and Schubert (31). Bizet’s less prolific composition of music was nevertheless of high quality, especially in opera. He finished Carmen in 1875, the year he died. The Pearl Fishers (Les Pêcheurs de Perles in French) premiered more than a decade earlier, in 1863. Neither opera enjoyed critical or popular success during Bizet’s lifetime. The production we will experience is a DVD of a live Metropolitan Opera performance in 2015. Synopsis: The opera is set in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka). It could be anywhere Europeans considered exotic. The locale is only a vehicle for a human love story complicated by its circumstances and its exoticism. Act 1: Pearl fishers on a seashore near a Hindu temple sing of their dangerous occupation. Their chosen leader, Zurga, greets his long-lost friend Nadir. Together, they remember how, years before, their friendship had almost been destroyed by their mutual love of a beautiful young priestess. They renew their vows renouncing their loves to save their friendship. A boat brings ashore a veiled virgin priestess named Leila. She is here, with high priest Nourabad, to offer prayers for the safety of the pearl fishers. Nadir has returned here, having renounced his vow (soliloquy). He and Leila recognize each other. They meet alone and rekindle their mutual love. [intermission] Act 2: Leila and Nourabad remember how she had once hidden a fugitive and been rewarded with a necklace she still owns. Nadir finds Leila in the temple, they share their love (duet), but fishermen capture him as he leaves. Zurga comes to adjudicate the crime. When Leila’s veil is withdrawn (no longer a virgin), he recognizes her and in jealous rage condemns both Leila and Nadir to death. A storm appropriately ends the act. Act 3: Leila pleads to Zurga for mercy, his love is rekindled, but his jealousy prevails, and the funeral pyre is prepared. Leila and Nadir are reconciled to death (duet). But Zurga recognizes the necklace Leila is wearing. With the fishermen’s village burning, Zurga reveals that he was the refugee Leila saved. He frees her and Nadir, telling them to flee. As they depart to share a life of love together, Zurga is left to meet his fate with the fishermen.
