LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of His redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of His most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING:

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 23 beginning at the 23rd verse

"Am I a God at hand, says the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? says the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the LORD. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, `I have dreamed, I have dreamed!' How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams which they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Ba'al? Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the LORD. Is not my word like fire, says the LORD, and like a hammer which breaks the rock in pieces? Reader: Here ends the Reading.ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 82

1.God takes his stand in the council of heaven;* he gives judgement in the midst of the gods:

2.”How long will you judge unjustly,* and show favour to the wicked?

3.Save the weak and the orphan;* defend the humble and needy;

4.Rescue the weak and the poor;* deliver them from the power of the wicked.

5.They do not know, neither do they understand; they go about in darkness;* all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6.Now I say to you, ‘You are gods,* and all of you children of the Most High;

7.Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals,*and fall like any prince.’”

8.Arise, O God, and rule the earth,* for you shall take all nations for your own.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit;As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLEA Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Hebrews Chapter 12 beginning at the 1st verse

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking

Page 5: Pentecost 13 [2013]

to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? -- "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

Reader: Here ends the Reading.ALL: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 12: 49-56Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to LukeGlory to Christ our Saviour.At that time Jesus said, "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." He also said to the multitudes, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, `A shower is coming';

Page 6: Pentecost 13 [2013]

and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

**********From the Rector’s NotebookGreetings:

The movement of time continues and so vacation time is over and the good Lord brings me back to the altar and the pulpit and the ongoing ministry of the church as we continue together to proclaim Christ, died, risen and ascended.

It is with deep appreciation that I express sentiments of thanks to the Dean Emeritus, The Very Rev’d William Dixon, CBE, who was Priest-in-Charge during my holiday and Frs. Marcus Lashley and Guy Hewitt who ably assisted.

A special word of thanks to the wardens and members of the PCC, the Chalice Assistants and all others who ensured that the ministry within the church continued during my absence.

My family and I express our condolences to those who have suffered the loss of loved ones recently and pray that God almighty will give strength and comfort in the weeks and months to come.

It was with true regret that we learnt of the death of Anthony Johnson who had served for four years on our Parochial Church Council and was a faithful

Page 7: Pentecost 13 [2013]

7

member of the church. I was glad to know that Dean William Dixon was able to minister to him at the last.

Mr. Johnson’s burial coincided with my return to work and so I was able to be here to preach the sermon and conduct the funeral service.

“Tony’s” wise, quiet but sound counsel both at the parish level and nationally on economic matters will be recalled for years to come, may he rest in peace.

Here in our island with the recent budget debate our minds and conversations will be filled with the various proposals that have been put forward in the context of the difficult financial context in which we find ourselves.

When we examine the pages of scripture we come across the people of God who often functioned in very trying economic circumstances and in the midst of all found the strength, grace and faith in God almighty to see them through.

Certainly thoughts on prospects for the education of our children and other serious matters will be uppermost in our minds. We place ourselves in the hands of God almighty with the assurance that he has never failed us and will not on this occasion.

Happy to be back from holiday and looking forward to us putting our heads and hearts together with love, faith and patience as we work in this church together.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon)Rector
