READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 32 beginning at the 3rd verse

Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Se'ir, the country of Edom, instructing them, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, `I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now; and I have oxen, asses, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.'" And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him." As for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. At that time Jesus told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, `Vindicate me against my adversary.' For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, `Though I neither fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.'" And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily.

From the Rector’s NotebookGreetings:

As Christians and as citizens we must be concerned about the moral and spiritual fabric of our society.

We seem to be living in a society in which persons feel there is no hope; with the news of apparent suicides and the fact that persons are responding violently in the midst of the most petty disputes.

The reports of domestic violence are alarming because our homes must be havens of peace and

security, in which our children learn about differences and how to live in love and charity in that small society, in order that they may take their places within the wider community.

We must be alarmed that many, some, not all of our young people are in possession of very dangerous weapons and seem prepared to use them at the slightest provocation.

We would want very much to present an alternative to the view that issues and challenges must be solved with the use of violence and we strongly urge those who are bent on a life of crime to look again to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Jesus as Lord of heaven and earth had legions of angels who would fight on his behalf; but that was not his way.

He was loving and forgiving, he taught us to say forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

He taught us to in his own symbolic way to turn the other cheek, meaning to that we are to think very carefully about the proposed action before we carry it out.

We must be aware that there are many persons in prisons across the world and no doubt here in Barbados who would not be there if they had only taken the time to stop and think before carrying our some plan of retaliation.

Let us take the hands of our children and take them to church and Sunday School and children’s

bible study classes once again. They will suffer no harm for this.

Let us encourage each other to learn a new positive and character building skill and above all, let us learn to love the Lord Jesus and and pray that he may make our hearts to be like His Heart.

Start time is 5:30 a.m. from the Church Hall, through Edgerton, down to South District, along Mapp Hill, left through Mount Friendship on to the highway, left through the track that leads back to Upton and back to the St. David’s Church.

MINISTRY TO THE PRIMARY SCHOOLThe new school year has started and we continue as a church to assist with the Breakfast programme at our neighbouring Blackman & Gollop Primary School. You can help either by (1) donating money in the envelope labelled “Special Offering”, if you have not yet done so; (2) giving something from the list [see notice board] or (3) giving of your time on Wednesday or Friday morning from 7:30 to 9:30. Saint James of Jerusalem (October 23)

James first Bishop of Bishops, who died in 62 or 69, was an important figure of the Apostolic Age. He is distinguished from the Apostle James, son of Zebedee by various titles; he is called James the brother of the Lord by Paul (Galatians 1:19), James surnamed the Just by Hegesippus and others, "James the “Righteous", "James of Jerusalem".The Acts of the Apostles provides clear evidence that James was an important figure in the Christian community of Jerusalem. When Peter, having miraculously escaped from prison, must flee Jerusalem, he asks that James be informed (12:17). He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem and presided there over the first church council. At that time when the Christians of Antioch are concerned over whether Gentile Christians need be circumcised to be saved, they send Paul and Barnabas to confer with the church there, and it is James who utters the definitive judgment (15:13ff). When Paul arrives in Jerusalem to deliver the money he raised for the faithful there, it is James to whom he speaks, and who insists that Paul ritually cleanse himself (21:18).James’ epistle is also the chief biblical text for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. James writes:

“Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. And their prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make them well. And anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.” (5:14,15).
