says the suspect was apprehended after heshot a police officer. He has been arrested along with five other
gang members.“The group was arrested with the help of
witnesses. One of their victims was a policeofficer. The colonelmanaged to stab one of thesuspects who was traced to GF Jooste Hospi-tal,” he says. “His mother thought we wouldnot check at hospitals outside of Mitchell’sPlain, but we did as we leave no stone un-turned.” The group is believed to have beenoperating from “The Base” in Tafelsig West,a stronghold for the Fancy Boys. The group appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain

A Tafelsig teenager, hired as a hitman forthe Fancy Boys, has been arrested along with five others in what will be the station’s first Poca (Prevention of Organised Crime Act) case. The Act is used to secure harsher sentences on gang kingpins and their foot soldiers. PROPERTY: POTENTIAL HOME BUYERS SHOULD MAKE INFORMED CHOICES
Know your rightsLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Buying or selling property through anestate agent? Here’s how to protect your interests
when doing so, and what you can do ifthings go wrong.Investing your life savings to buy a prop-
erty is not an easy decision to make. But knowing you’re in the capable hands
of an upright estate agentmaymake the ex-perience a lot less daunting. While all estate agents are required to
register with the Estate Agency AffairsBoard (EAAB), many have been found to beoperating without the required certifica-tion.The board is a body established by gov-
ernment to protect your interestswhen youbuy and sell property through an estateagent. The board’s marketing and publications
manager, Margie Campbell, says verifyingthe status of the estate agent is as easy aspicking up the phone.“They (potential buyers and sellers) can
phone our call centre on 087 285 3222 andprovide the estate agent’s name and askthem to verify or they can view our websiteand under the agent search key type in theestate agents name,” she says.People’s Post recently reported on a prin-
cipal estate agent plying her trade withoutthe relevant certification (“Evicted familycharged with trespassing”, 15 May).Record of sale by a company which pro-
vides comprehensive data, analytics andsystems on property shows estate agentMishkaCassiem (Truter) bought a propertyon 23May 2012. It was purchased by the newowner on 26 June 2012 and transferred joint-ly to both the new owner and Cassiem on12 September 2012 by means of a simultane-ous transfer.A principal agent is required to have ob-
tained anNQ5 certificate as well as a Fideli-
ty Fund Certificate, authorities confirm.Without these, a principal agent is fraud-
ulently selling property, according to theboard“Only licensed estate agents are supposed
to deal with real estate transactions be-tween a buyer and seller or landlord andtenant,” Campbell says. Unlicensed estateagents can be slapped with a fine of up toR25 000.A lack of knowledge and understanding
puts potential buyers at risk.Principal real estate agent Shereen Abra-
hams says the industry is tainted by“dogged agents”, these are agents who per-sist in making a sale to the point of annoy-ance.“I encourage potential buyers and sellers
to familiarise themselves with the processof buying and selling a property through anestate agent before taking the plunge,” shesays. “Dogged agentswill easily take advan-tage of people’s lack of knowledge.”Ask questions before signing off your
hard-earned money, Abrahams encourag-es.“Make sure you are credit worthy. Pre-
qualify yourself at the bank to know whatyou can buy for,” she advises.“Look at what is on the market in your
price range and view a number of proper-ties to get to know the value of houses onsale in the area you are purchasing.“Also inspect for defects as renovations
and repairs are costly. Compare what youlike on each property and follow your in-stincts.”In an attempt to buy a house, potential
buyer Chantelle Rooi (41), says she uncov-ered a handful of “dodgy estate agents whoare in it just to make a quick buck”.“I had the money to buy a house in my
neighbourhood. I had been living with mymother and decided I was ready to makethat move,” she says. But she was in for a shock when estate
agents drove her around the neighbour-hood to view potential homes from the win-dow of the car.“They would never allow me to get out of
the car and view the inside of the property. That is when I knew something is wrong,”she says. This has wavered her trust in estate
agents. “You just don’t know whom totrust.”Do you suspect your estate agent has vio-
lated the law or the code of conduct govern-ing the industry? You may lodge a com-plaint in writing with the EAAB. You areentitled to claim repayment from theboard’s fidelity fund if an estate agent hasstolen or mismanaged your money. The complaint must contain an exposi-
tion (a comprehensive description and ex-planation) of the conduct and be deliveredby hand or by registered post. The EAABwas unable to confirm the number of unreg-istered estate agents reported to them.V Call the Estate Agency Affairs Board whistle-blowerhotline on 0800 223 225.

‘It’s either a coffin or jail’LAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Brand says the case will be moved to theCape High Court. However, he was at thisstage unable to confirm when that wouldhappen.“Aspecial advocatehasbeenappointed in
the meantime to preside over the matter intheMitchell’s PlainMagistrate’s Court,” hesays.De Roock says this is the first Poca case
for Mitchell’s Plain police, but not the last.Detective Colonel Neville Jonas says the
youth, if convicted, will be sent to the juve-nile section at Pollsmoor Prison until they
turn 18.“The 16-year-old is at this stage beingkept
in a place of safety,” he confirms.Brand encourages parents to not harbour
criminals.“It is either a coffin or jail. The decision
is yours. Do not protect your child at thecost of another parent’s child. Report themas soon as you suspect they have been re-cruited by gang leaders so that we can im-mediately begin with proactive counsellingwork,” he stresses. The arrest of the Fancy Boys hit man and
five others is a warning to other gangs,Brand insists. “Let this be a warning to oth-ers as wewill be going for the Yakkies, Nice
Time Kids and Americans next.”A gangster branded the brains behind a
series of crimes was handed three life sen-tences for murder.Saliem John, nephew of the late ganglord
Colin Stanfield and suspected leader of the28s gang, was sentenced along with six co-accused in the Cape High Court earlier thisyear. The charges include murder, dealing in
drugs, malicious damage to property, at-tempted murder, illegal gang activity andthe possession of unlicensed firearms andammunition, and charges under the Pre-vention of OrganisedCrimeAct for gang-re-lated incidents in Valhalla Park.

MYCITI: WAGE DISPUTE BETWEEN SUBCONTRACTOR AND WORKER
Local labourer ‘short-paid’LAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
A cloud of financial mismanagementclaims hang over the MyCiTi bus ser-vice in Mitchell’s Plain.
The construction of bus stops as well as abus station at the Town Centre is well under-way ahead of the roll-out of the service inJune, but a local labourer employed for thejob is not happy.
He claims to have been short-paid andthreatened with lay-off when raising thematter with his superior.
While the construction project is beingwell managed by Group Five, local subcon-tractor New Breed Construction faces alle-gations of exploiting staff.
Cassiem (Clive) Playton from Eastridge isone of 40 Mitchell’s Plain residents em-ployed for the project.
He says he was paid R400 short on his sala-ry. Other claims include not being paid forwear-and-tear on his bakkie which he usesto transport workers and equipment.
“It was also agreed on that I would be com-pensated for petrol used for transportingworkers and equipment, but this has nothappened,” Playton insists.
A handful of young local labourers em-ployed via the City of Cape Town’s databaseare also being paid short, Playton claims.
“Many of them are desperate for work andtoo afraid to speak up because they fear los-ing their job. But I cannot just sit back andwatch them get away with it,” he says. “Forme it is not so much about the money as Ihave another means of income. It is aboutthe principle and the fact that an agreementwas made and is now not being upheld.”
New Breed Construction’s Gerald Browninsists all money owed to Playton was paid.
“We employed him and he disappeared onshort-time. His vehicle was in a crappy statewhen he started the job and now he wantsmoney to do repairs,” Brown insists.
However, Playton vehemently deniesthese allegations.
“I was put on short-time after I enquiredabout the monies which was owed to me. Ionly want what was agreed upon and noth-ing more.”People’s Post has in its possession copies
of petrol slips accumulated since Playtonstarted on the job two months ago.
“I was instructed to keep all the slips so
payments could be made at the end of themonth. However, this has not happened.
“The petrol bills have a total value of morethan R1000 which I have had to pay out ofmy own pocket,” Playton says.
An internal investigation will belaunched, Group Five officials confirm.
Mayoral Committee member for Trans-port Brett Herron says: “Group Five is ar-ranging a hearing between the parties to bechaired by an independent person in orderto establish the truth. The contractor willtake disciplinary steps against the individu-al or individuals who are found to have been
lying in this instance.”The contract that has been entered into
with Group Five dictates the minimum wagerequirements, he says.
“The contractor and any of his subcon-tractors are required to abide by this re-quirement, as well as the laws of the coun-try.
“The City has received assurances fromthe contractor that the matter will be dealtwith, and is confident that the issues will beresolved satisfactorily.”
Playton has since taken the matter upwith the Bargaining Council.

PEOPLE'S POST | MITCHELL'S PLAINThursday, 22 May 20144 WORD ON THE STREET
The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be carrying out work onthe 915mm diameter bulk water pipeline in Strandfontein Road from 11:00 to 14:00 onWednesday 28 May 2014.
This work will be done to assess the operational integrity of the control valves on this sectionof the pipeline in preparation for the replacement of a 600mm diameter butterfly valve inJuly 2014.
Although alternate water supply will be introduced to this area during this period, therewill be the possibility of low water pressure from 8th Avenue, Lotus River to Spine Road,Strandfontein and includes the areas of Eagle Park, Pelican Park, Pelican Park Extension,Strandfontein and Schaap Kraal (Olieboom Road).
Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers upfront fordomestic consumption.
Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimaldisruption to the water supply in the affected areas.
Residents in the affected areas are requested to reduce their water consumption during thisperiod. The water will be slightly discoloured for a brief period once the water supply is restored.
The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

Preparingfor theBig ChillWinter is here, which means gloves, soup, electric blankets and precautionary meas-ures to stay extrawarm on a rainy day. Pow-er outages are very common inwinter, so it’sprudent to be sparing with electricity andwater. Winter is not a favourite with manypeople, so People’s Post took to the streets tofind out what readers had to say.
ALBERTUS LOEDOLFF doesn’t really take anymeasures to save electricity for winter. “The onlything I did to save money this winter was not replace my pool pump.” PHOTOS: JODY FORTUIN
TASNEEM VAN DIENEL loves to hibernate in winter so she is preparing for the cold times by switching off her geyser. “I love spending time with family and friends on our movie nights.”
LUCKY ELDOM loves the outdoors, so he is nottoo worried about no electricity and warm waterin winter. “I jog a lot, because you don't get toohot and it’s better than just staying at home.”
EVA RAUSCH labels herself as a friend to the environment and is not really perturbed by the Capewinter. “I have solar heating, boreholes and isoboards to save electricity and to heat the house.”
CHRIS BRUINERS is a big fan of winter becausehe gets together with family and friends. “I switchoff the geyser and the TV when it’s not in useand I switch off the lights early.”
MIKE FINN finds it difficult to save electricity andwater in winter, but tries. “I use the washing machine less, but I use the tumble dryer more. I turnoff the geyser and only switch when needed.”
CARYN KOCK is prepared for the cold fronts. “Iuse my gas stove, the gas heater and I light upmy fire place. I also switch off my geyser and Iuse my geyser blanket, which works wonders.”

TOWN CENTRE: DEALERS GET CREATIVE
Drug scourgepersistsLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Drug pushers preying at the Town Cen-tre are getting creative.
Shoppers say the pushers are hidingdrugs in their mouths.
While this is not a new trend, authoritiessay it does make policing more challenging.
The men in blue are now encouraging thepublic to provide detailed descriptions ofdrug dealers plying their trade at the shop-ping hub.
Mitchell’s Plain resident Arthur Pillaysays he has on more than two instancesseen foreigners selling drugs to young boysand girls.
“I witnessed just notes and no coins ex-changing hands for a small packet (ofdrugs) sold from (the man’s) mouth,” hesays.
He insists something must be done to ad-dress the “flourishing drug trade” at theTown Centre.
“I’m not blaming the police, as it is an al-most impossible task to catch these drugdealers in the act. However, somethingmust be done about the influx of foreign na-tionals who are selling drugs,” Pillay says.
Trader Jasmine Harris says merchantshave for years been hiding drugs in theirmouths in a bid to avoid being caught.
“The drugs are sold in small quantitiesmaking it easy for them to hide in theirmouths and swallow if police approach,”she says.
Mitchell’s Plain station commander Brig-adier Johan Brand says: “The drug sellerswill swallow the drugs when they see offic-ers approaching, but our members knowhow to get it out of them,” he says. “Manypeople will inform us about sellers hidingdrugs in their mouth, but no one comes for-ward with a description of the men. Bring
us a detailed description which can assistus in apprehending the suspects,” Brand in-sists.
A thriving drug trade as well as a spateof robberies have plagued the trading pre-cinct in recent months. The most recent ar-rest at the Town Centre dates back twoweeks, authorities say.
A man linked to the 27s gang was arrestedfor robbery. The arrest follows a shootoutwith police on Friday 9 May near the trad-ing precinct.
Police spokesperson Constable ZandileMarashula says officers were attending toa complaint in 6th Avenue, Eastridge, whentwo women approached them and reporteda robbery in progress on an open field near-by.
On noticing the police van approaching, the suspects fled on foot.
“However, one of the suspects drew a fire-arm and started shooting at the police. Of-ficers retaliated and managed to apprehendthe suspect. A 9mm pistol, two magazinesand 13 live rounds were confiscated,” Mar-ashula says.
A man suspected to be dealing drugs atthe Town Centre was apprehended on Fri-day 11 April. Mitchell’s Plain police spokes-person Sergeant Jerome Voegt says officersreceived an anonymous tip-off which led tothe arrest of a 28-year-old man.
“Our members received an anonymoustip-off that a man is selling drugs at thenorthern terminal taxi rank at the TownCentre. Our members spotted the suspectand immediately pounced on him. Theyfound in his possession 50 units of heroin, two whole and three halves of mandrax tab-lets and two small packets of tik.”
The drugs have an estimated street valueof R1700, Voegt says.V To report crime call the Mitchell’s Plain Police Sta-tion on (021) 370 1600.

TOWN CENTRE: GOODS VALUED AT R2.8M STOLEN
Cops snare robbery gangLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
A gang believed to be behind a spate ofrobberies and break-ins at Town Cen-tre has been busted.
Mitchell’s Plain police made the big break
following a robbery at a Cash for Gold store. The suspects, who have been linked to a
spate of crimes including murder, armedrobbery, theft and burglary, have beenlinked to the Ghetto Taxis gang.
The robbery gang was ousted followingthe arrest of two suspects wanted in connec-tion with the jewellery store robbery on Fri-day 9 May.
Rings, earrings, gold chains and braceletswith an estimated amount of R2.8m were sto-len.
Detective ConstableBilly John Burrows saysstore owner has severalshops in the Town Cen-tre. The stolen goodswere pawned at one ofthe chain stores,” Bur-rows says. “The suspectsold the items at the storeusing his ID number andaddress. We traced thesuspects back to a prop-erty in KarbonkelbergStreet, Tafelsig.”
Goods to the value ofR1.5m has been recov-ered.
Two men aged 24 and28 were arrested.
The men are expectedto appear in the Mitch-ell’s Plain Magistrate’sCourt today.
But the investigatingwork did not stop there.
Warrant Officer Andre Oliver says a fol-low-up investigation was done and a further15 suspects arrested.
“While they could not be linked to the bur-glary at the Cash for Gold store, seven areconnected to the Ghetto Taxis, an Eastridgegang and the others are linked to the Ameri-cans gang,” he confirms. “They are believedto be responsible for the break-ins at theTown Centre.”
There was a warrant of arrest out for threeof the suspects for robberies.
There have been no break-ins or robberiessince their arrest, station commander Briga-dier Johan Brand confirms.
Trader Kulsum Baker is elated the rob-
bery gang has been arrested.“We hope they will remain behind bars
and that the Town Centre will be restoredto its former glory with the help of police,”she says.
Kenny Brinkhuis of the Mitchell’s PlainUnited Hawkers’ Forum says police mustcontinue to crackdown on crime at the trad-ing precinct.
“We want shoppers to feel they are safewhen coming to the Town Centre. Tradershave been adversely affected by the rise incrime at the shopping hub and this needs tochange,” he insists.V If you suspect you may have inadvertently boughtstolen jewellery call Detective Constable Billy JohnBurrows on 074 494 6368.

SUBCOUNCIL: OFFICIALS’ FURY AT CHAIRPERSON
Clash of thecouncillorsLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Mounting tension in the ranks of Sub-council 23 has resulted in a clash ofcouncillors.
The integrity of the job seekers database– a City of Town relief project – is beingquestioned as some feel officials aremanip-ulating the system.Councillor Goawa Timm launched a
scathing attack against Subcouncil 23chairperson andward 75 councillorNatalieBent at a meeting on Monday morning. This comes after it emerged that 102 peo-
ple had been employed in Bent’s ward viathe database and only a total of 12 and 19were employed in wards 76 and 88 respec-tively during April.Subcouncil 23 includes three wards and
covers a vast part ofMitchell’s Plain includ-ing Lentegeur, Mandalay, Montclair,Woodlands, New Woodlands, Philippi,Heinz Park, Colorado Park, Morgen’s Vil-lage, Westgate, Wildwood, Rondevlei Park,Weltevreden Valley, Highlands Village andHyde Park.Timm, councillor for Ward 76, demands
an investigation be launched.“Why is it when we submit applications
it takes forever to be approved, but if thechairperson makes an application it is ap-proved right away?”Discrepancies in the number of people
employed via the database emerged at themeeting earlier this week.“There are always a lot more EPWP
workers employed in Ward 75 compared tothe other wards in this subcouncil,” Timm
says.Proportional Representative councillor
Kenneth Lategan echoes the need for an in-vestigation into the matter.“A report must be compiled on all out-
standing, current and future projects,” hesays. However, subcouncil manager Raphael
Martin insists the onus is on councillors tofollow up on applications made.“The chairperson does not know what
happens in every ward. Every proposal orapplication submitted is approved by theEPWP office.”But Timm insists Bent is using her rank
to escalate her applications.“Unfairness is a big problem in this sub-
council. We (councillors) have spokenabout this and believe the chairperson isspeaking directly with officials to have hersubmissions escalated,” Timm says. “As achairperson you should be following up onsubmissions for all wards.”However, Bent refutes claims of bias. “I
request feedback on a regular basis for allmy wards. My projects do not get escalatedbecause I am chair, but because I regularlyfollow up.”Martin reiterates this. “Bent submits
proposals weekly. Other councillors do notdo that.Wehave receivedminimal requestsfrom other councillors,” he stresses.Ward 88 councillor Michael “Pat” Pie-
tersen requests the subcouncilmanager fol-low up on all proposals submitted.“We cannot be making the same submis-
sions over and over again. I am still await-ing an outcome on a proposal sent lastyear,” he says.

TAFELSIG: HOUSING MINISTER FACES RESIDENTS’ FURY
‘Must we alwaysgrab for land?’LAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
The long wait for housing has Mitchell’sPlain residents in a heated dialoguewith government.
Deputy Minister of Human SettlementsZou Kota-Fredericks recently met with dis-gruntled residents in Tafelsig in an effort toaddress their housing grievances. But many said another meeting would
prove futile in improving their dire livingconditions.Resident Anthony George was one of hun-
dreds of housing beneficiary hopefuls whofiled into the small community centre tovent their simmering rage and grievances. The wheelchair-bound father is on the
housing waiting list.He says: “Of the houses being built 10%
must go to disabled people, but in reality itis not happening.”Community worker Sulyman Stellen-
boom says the City of Cape Town is wastingtaxpayers’ money.“We need national government to apply
pressure on the localmunicipality to deliverquality housing to the people. There areMitchell’s Plain residents who have been onthe housing waiting list for 20 years, but areyet to receive a home of their own,” he in-sists.Thehousingwaiting list is amyth, Stellen-
boom believes.“There is no housing waiting list. There
are children in their 20s who have received
homes. How is this possible?” he fumes.“We need national government to inter-
vene and apply pressure on the City of CapeTown to deliver.”Kota-Fredericks blames a breakdown in
communication between residents and gov-ernment for the flaws in the City’s housingwaiting list.“There must be something wrong with
this system if a person who has been on thehousing waiting list for so many years hasstill not received a house,” she maintains.National government gives money to pro-
vincial government who in turns gives themoney tomunicipalities to build houses, Ko-ta-Fredericks reiterates.“Weunderstandhouses cannot be built for
everyone at once, but local governmentmust communicate with (residents) aboutprogress in terms of delivering houses to the
people,” she stresses.Speaking at the meeting, a resident said
her mother had registered on the housingwaiting list in 1983. On enquiring about hermother’s status, she was told by City offi-cials “the application had been lost”.“We reapplied in 2011,” she says.Resident Terence Hoskins says govern-
ment must stop wasting money.“Don’t buy fighter jets, build houses.Must
we always march and grab land to get whatwe want?” he says.An expected Cabinet reshuffle prompted
Kota-Fredericks to hold the public meetingin Mitchell’s Plain. She brought along a team of senior offi-
cialswho she sayswill take forward the com-munity’s concerns should her position asdeputyminister be affected by the anticipat-ed reshuffle.

SAFETY MEASURE: PLEA FOR LOCALS TO GET INVOLVED
Frustration mountsLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Police relations are strained inWestridge. But, in a bid to improvepartnership policing in the area, offi-
cials are mobilising residents to get in-volved.Tension peaked and tempers erupted at a
public meeting last week.Police, community safety structures and
residents gathered at Duneside Primary toelect an interim subforum committee. The committee is the go-between police
and the community.Disgruntled residents claim police are not
doing enough to address the “rising crimelevels” in their neighbourhood.Abie Isaacs, chairperson of the Mitchell’s
Plain Community Policing Forum, saysthere has been no subforum inWestridge forthe past year.
“As a result there has been a communica-tion vacuumbetween the police and commu-nity. We want to resolve this so there can beconstant engagement, feedback providedand matters can be resolved,” he says.Sector commander Captain Leon Jooste
says public meetings were never held inWestridge before he took over the reigns.“This is going to change. Community po-
licing is a vital part of our strategy. I cannotcontinue working without a subforum whowill inform me of the challenges in the com-munity and provide feedback to residents,”he explains. “I cannot fight crime alone. This is your neighbourhood and I need yourhelp.”
Speaking at the meeting, a resident criti-cised police for not responding to com-plaints.“I called the police and lodged my com-
plaint, but I am still waiting for the officersto come out and investigate,” he says. However, Jooste says: “All officers must
report back and provide feedback on com-plaints they respond to. Action is takenagainst those who fail to effectively dealwith complaints. If you have such problemsdo not wait a month for the next meeting toreport it. Come to me with unresolved mat-ters and I will take it forward.”Amanwho claims to have personally con-
tacted Jooste about his neighbour smoking
dagga says police are yet to act on his com-plaint. “A month after the meeting withJooste and the matter has still not been at-tended to.”Meanwhile, residents complained the sec-
tor commander for the area has changed fartoo often.Mitchell’s Plainpolice station commander
Brigadier Johan Brand confirms four sectorcommanders have come and gone in a four-year period. “Officers were promoted, someresigned and others stepped down as sectorcommander due to a shortage of officers onshift duty,” Brand explains. The current sector commander comes
highly recommended. “He was a sector com-mander in Rocklands for between two andthree years. The residents of that neighbour-hood actually want him back,” Brand says.“Residents need toworkwith him to addresscrime in that area. There needs to be amutu-al understanding and respect.”

ROCKLANDS: PARENTS FUMING AT PUPILS’ EARLY DISMISSAL
Vandals plunge school in darknessLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
A spate of vandalism at Oval North Highin Rocklands has parents calling for so-lutions.
Reports surfaced of pupils being dismissedon Tuesday morning due to vandalism, but
authorities say the school did not “official-ly close”.Parents took to social media claiming
they had received an SMS from the schoolthat pupils would be dismissed early dueto the vandalism incident. The SMS reads: “Oval North: Dear Par-
ent, due to severe vandalism learners arebeing dismissed 8h30 today. Transportwillbe contacted if learner comes to office.Thank you NK”However, provincial education spokes-
person Bronagh Casey disputes this.“It is reported that pupils walked out of
class in protest of the electricity shortageat the school due to vandalism. The issuewas reported to the Department of Trans-port and Public Works,” she says.“No pupils were dismissed. A school can
only close with permission from the HODof the provincial education department.”
The provincial Department of PublicWorks was expected to conduct an assess-ment at the school in order to reinstall light-ing in the classrooms.“A report has also been submitted regard-
ing repairs to the school roof and fence,” Ca-sey adds.Principal Na-eemKassiem says the school
was plunged into darkness after cablethieves ripped out electrical wiring in theclassroom.Parent Dielshaan Bloys says vandals are
disrupting teaching and learning time.“It really is unfair to the pupils and teach-
ers. Staff work hard to assist our childrenand then someone decides to remove the(electrical wiring), putting our children’ssafety and the safety of their teachers injeopardy,” she says. She believes vandals live in the nearby vi-
cinity of the school.

Added benefit to buckling upSeat belts and air bags are not only good
at protecting a person’s head and chestduring a car crash. They also help pro-
tect the kidneys, according to a news reportin Wheels24.
Researchers found that survivors of carcrashes who wore a seat belt and had a vehi-cle with air bags were less likely to have aserious kidney injury or to need one of theirkidneys removed than people who didn’ttake those precautions.
Dr Marc Bjurlin, a urologist at NYU Lang-one Medical Centre in New York, says: “Thisprovides additional evidence to support therole of these protective devices in motor ve-hicles.”
Soften the impactThe research was presented on Friday 16
May at the 109th Annual Scientific Meetingof the American Urological Association inOrlando, Florida.
Seat belts are designed to spread the forceof a vehicle crash across the pelvis and chestwhile an air bag is meant to soften the im-pact between the body and car.
For the new study, the researchers ana-lysed information on motor vehicle crash in-juries in 2010 and 2011 from the NationalTrauma Data Bank. Of the 287 174 accidents, there were 2 580 kidney injuries.
The researchers found that when air bagsand seat belts were used together, the riskof serious kidney injuries fell by about 23%.The risk of surgery to remove a kidney fellby more than half.
Bjurlin says there are likely multiple rea-sons why using seat belts and air bags pro-tects the kidneys.
For example, seat belts keep people frommoving around the vehicle while alsospreading out the impact of the crash.
Ironically, in some studies the seat belthas been found to be a cause of kidney inju-ries. While that may be true in some cases,he says, overall wearing seat belts and usingair bags is beneficial.
“It protects your kidneys and reduced therisk of them being taken out.” SAFETY FIRST: A study has found that using your seat belt is still the safer option. PHOTO: GOOGLE IMAGES

How to buya car onlineA British fraud intelligence company
provides eight useful tips for buyingcars online.
According to figures released by the Brit-ishNational Fraud IntelligenceBureau, on-line vehicle fraud costs the UK the equiva-lent of R296m each year, according to a re-port in Wheels24.About half of frauds involved used car
buyers losing part or full payment for a ve-hicle and then loss of contact with the “sell-er”.HPI, a car history check company, urges
customers to be vigilant, especially when itcomes to buying online, as fraudsters havea whole range of tricks they use to con peo-ple out of their money.
Crafty fraudstersHPI senior consumer cervices manager
Shane Teskey says: “The latest figuresshow that too many used car buyers are be-ing duped by crafty fraudsters out to makea quick profit.“Online car buying is fast and conven-
ient, but it also gives scammers somewhereto hide. Some fraudsters even manage totake money for cars that are advertised on-line, but don’t actually exist.“Online sellers will often come across as
friendly, offering to make the sale as easyas possible, while at the same time offeringa bargain.”HPI’s tips of online used-car buying are:. Shop around: compare prices on other
websites.. Sites will give you an idea of the price
on make and model.. Ask questions: be on your guard.. Check out the seller’s history.. Create a short list and do anHPI Check
on the cars you’re considering.. Arrange to meet the seller in person,
with some company, and test drive the car.. Remember to cross reference the VIN
with the VRM to ensure they match.. When paying online ensure that the
website is secure.

Violets wilt against Manenberg RangersLIAM MOSES
@LiamCPT
Violets RFC will look to return to winningways on Saturday after suffering their sec-ond loss of the season last weekend. The Chucker Road club are second on the
Super League C table and already look likecontenders for the title. However, if Violets are to take the league
and earn promotion to Super League B, theywill need to be more consistent.Violets kicked off the season with a 14-20
loss away to Observatory’s Silvertree, beatStrand 21-15 at home, thrashed Van der Stel52-21 away, beat Northerns 19-3 at home, thumped Eerste River 51-15 at home and
slumped to a 6-8 loss away to ManenbergRangers last Saturday.Victory against Rangers would have seen
Violets on top of the standings, but Langacurrently lead the standings, one pointahead on 21.Theywill travel to face fifth-placed Strand
United in Strand this weekend and, withLanga on a bye, a victory will see Violets topthe table temporarily. Meanwhile, Manen-berg Rangers will travel to Somerset Westto face Raithby Universals buoyed by theirvictory against one of the front runners. The narrowwin against Violetswas Rang-
ers’ first in five attempts this season, havingsuffered defeats to Franschoek United, Sil-vertree, Langa and Strand in previous
games. In Raithby, the Manenberg side face one
of just two sides in the tournament with aperfect record.Universals rackedup large scores in victo-
ries against Van der Stel, Strand United, El-sies River and Stellenbosch Coronations, and currently hold third place on the tablewith 19 points in the bag.Rangers will have put in another massive
performance to turn over this Super LeagueC heavyweight.Seventh-placed Silvertree have a much
easier fixture in store and should be expect-ed to win. After the win against Violets, Silvertree
went on to beat Manenberg Rangers, lose to
Stellenbosch Coronations, lose to StrandUnited, beat Bonteheuwel’s Silverleaf andlose to Elsies River United last Saturday. This weekend they host Eerste River RFC,
who are 13th on the table after a solitarywinin five matches.Silvertree shouldheapmoremisery on the
visitors and win the game comfortably. The match will take place at Malta Park
in Observatory at 15:30.In other club rugby fixtures on Saturday,
UCT will host Durbanville-Belville at theGreen Mile in Super League A, while in Su-per LeagueBCollegianswill host Hands andHeart in Lentegeur and Villager welcomeSurrey Estate Rangers to Brookside inClaremont.

Log leaders slipup, but stay topLIAM MOSES
@LiamCPT
TheMrPriceHighSchools’ League top threeare rueing their missed opportunities afterdropping points in last weekend’s fixtures.Beacon Hill High School went into Satur-
day’smatches leading the log onnine points, ahead of second-placed Portland High ongoal difference and with defending champi-ons Mondale in third on six points. All three sides played to draws on Satur-
day, with the top two missing the chance toopen a gap at the top of the standings andMondale butchering an opportunity to closethe gap on the leaders.Beacon Hill drew 1-1 with Oval North
High, while Portland’s match against Bel-gravia was deadlocked at 2-2 and Mondaledrew 1-1 against Aloe High. The results mean all three sides maintain
their log positions, with Beacon Hill andPortland on 10 points andMondale on seven.Saturday’s results had a larger impact on
the middle of the table, with several sidesshifting upwards and Cloetesville, Tafelsigand Cedar now level on points with Mon-dale.Cloetesville beat Strandfontein 4-1 to
climb from fifth to fourth and Tafelsig leaptfrom 10th to fifth with a 3-1 win over Glen-dale, who dropped to seventh.Cedar now occupy sixth place thanks to a
1-0 win over Spine Road. The other results had little effect on the ta-
ble, with Lentegeur dropping from sixth toninth andRocklandsmaintaining 13th placeafter a the sides drew 1-all.Westridge and Princeton stayed in 14th
and 15th places respectively after drawing2-2.The league will continue on Saturday, but
the status quo at the top of the table willlikely be unchangedwith the top teams allexpected to pick upwins against lesser op-position. However, the scrap for thirdplace will heat up as Mondale plays fifth-placed Tafelsig and fourth-placed Cloetes-ville play sixth-placed Cedar.V Fixtures for Saturday 24 May: (09:00) Tafelsigvs Mondale; Portland vs Westridge; Princeton Highvs Strandfontein High; Belgravia High vs LentegeurHigh; (10:15) Cloetesville High vs Cedar High; SpineRoad vs Glendale High; Oval North vs Aloe High;and Beacon Hill vs Rocklands High.
