WITH the petrol price at an alltime high, and Metrorail uppingit’s fees, commuters are under-standablyconcernedaboutapos-sible hike in taxi fares.
Last week, petrol went up by 66cents a litre in coastal areas, mak-ing it R11.59 a litre – the highestsince July 2008. When People’s Postspoke to the WesternCape Taxi Councilchairperson, VernonBillet, he declined tocomment on the mat-ter but said that theywill discuss whetheror not a possible farehike is on the cards.
The South AfricanTransport and AlliedWorkers’ Union na-tional spokesperson,Mamokgethi Rea Mol-opyane, says she issure that taxi fees willincrease. “It will defi-nitely go up, it’s just amatter of time. If it happens, it willmake it difficult for the averageworker because 60 percent of theirsalary is already being spent ontransport. Now that amount will beeven bigger because of the Metro-rail increases. This is disappoint-ing, because the poor are gettingpoorer and the impact will definite-ly be felt by those on the ground.”
Meanwhile, local taxi drivers areadamant that taxi fees will have toincrease, sooner rather than later.
Richard Cwai, a taxi driver on theWynberg/Retreat route says faresshould definitely be increased. “Iam a father of four from Gugulethu.I have been driving taxis for years
now, and petrol has become ex-tremely expensive. People are go-ing to have to pay more for taxi fare– there is no other way, otherwisefood is being taken out of me and mychildren’s mouths.”
David Samiul, who drives theHanover Park/Retreat route saysthe last time their taxi associationhad an increase was almost threeyears ago. “We have to have an in-crease. We didn’t have one in a long
time, but if we don’t,we lose out at the endof the day. I believe weare still the cheapestmode of transport, so ithas to happen sometime or another.”
Nazeem Abdurag-man, from the Mitch-ell’s Plain Taxi Associ-ation says that taxiprices will definitelyincrease soon. “We areextremely communityorientated and we hateto do it, but we are go-ing to have to push thetaxi prices up. It’s not
that we want to, we are forced to doit. The petrol hikes are killing us.If it does increase though, we willkeep it as low as possible”, says Ab-duragman.
Some commuters People’s Postspoke to say another fare hikewould be too much to bear, but oth-ers understand the situation.
“Everybody needs to make a liv-ing, and it’s not the taxi driver’sfault that the petrol went up. So ifpush comes to shove, and theydo in-crease their fees, it should be okay,as long as they don’t increase it toomuch. Besides, I think they are stillcheap,” says Darren Seeger, a regu-lar taxi commuter.

Anti-abuse network meets
Dear reader,I hope you had a blessed, peaceful Easter
weekend. The year has rapidly rolled intoApril, signalling the beginning of a new finan-cial year which I found myself heading into mi-nus more than R11 000 after I had invested inmechanical repairs to my trusted, mature Vol-vo, and acquired an iPad and iPhone.
Cars and money aside, I now know that Ihave well and truly arrived in the world ofgadgets – and there is no turning back.
I currently own three cellphones, a (compa-ny) laptop, PC at home, and an iPad.What else do I need?
Resistant initially to joining thenow cool world of 21st Centurygadget geeks, I can’t imagine my lifeof communication without my BB,iPhone, iPad and other I’s still tocome. Now, what’s the card calledthat I need for my iPad... think it’sa microsim, right? Whatever, I’llfind place for it in my lightweightApple bag which from here on, ac-companies me everywhere and will form partof my baggage. Being a neat freak, slightly ob-sessive, packing for any trip is always anevent, for me and the unfortunate few who arepart of my plans; whether they want to be ornot. I can envisage my luggage when I attendthe next MLW (Media Leaders at Work) train-ing session: it will consist of a burgundy suit-case on wheels for my perfectly folded clothes, matching bags for my toiletries, shoes andsportswear and a travel-friendly bag for my be-loved gadgets.
I’m notorious for overpacking. In my favourthough, all the extra clothes I pack (usually sixoutfits for two days) have come in handy, evenif mainly in the virtual realm. On one tripthough, forewarned yielded dividends; I couldoffer a colleague one of my spare cardigans
when the weather changed. But, enough about me and more about our
readers...We published a cartoon last week that at-
tracted comment from some readers, includ-ing Judy who wrote (slightly edited): “DearFeroza, I’m not sure what this picture is sup-posed to depict. This is our time as Christianswhere we celebrate the crucifixion of our Lordand Saviour Jesus Christ who died and roseagain to give us eternal life and for this pictureto be put in this issue is totally inappropriate.
If you’re wanting to wish Christiansa “Blessed Easter” then do so directlyas you haven’t done this in the entirepaper. You could’ve used a picture ofa family on a wagon and horse, abso-lutely no need to use a picture whichto me looks like Jesus on a donkeyand three crosses on the hill.”
I replied to Judy as follows: “DearJudy, I hope you are well and that youare having a Blessed Easter weekend. Many thanks for your email and val-
ued feedback. The cartoon was not intended tooffend in any way. It depicts the mode of trans-port used then for what is a revered time ofyear, as opposed to modern day. It contraststhe slower pace of life then, versus the speedof life today. I regret that you feel offended. Inno way was the image aimed at offending asour publications have high regard for allfaiths. On page 2 of this week’s (3 April’s) Peo-ple’s Post, I wished everyone a Blessed Easter(in my ConnectED column). I will certainlymake mention of your comments in nextweek’s column.” Till next time, go well!

“I am available for anyone who needs as-sistance. People find themselves in tryingtimes facing many legal issues and I wouldlike to assist them in any way I can. I haveassisted many people across Cape Town andif there are matters I can’t help with, I willrefer the clients to other lawyers who I workwith,” he says.
The services and advice is free, however,if residents can give any donation towardsthe printing and administration costs, itwould be appreciated. Visit him at 55 RugbyStreet, Beacon Valley, from Monday to Fridaybetween 08:30 and 18:00. George can be con-tacted on (021) 376 4798 or 083 422 5246.

METRORAIL’s last minute price hike re-prieve turned into an absolute nightmarefor the parastatal on Monday 2 Aprilwhen commuters ended up being chargedup to 50 percent more for their monthlytickets.
Metrorail has admitted that there was atechnical flaw in its system and promised torefund all commuters who were affected bythe price shock. Commuters influenced bythe glitch can take their tickets back to theticket office they purchased it from and theywill be refunded accordingly. New ticketswill also be issued.
The price saga started in March whenMetrorail announced that it would be in-creasing fares by an average of 27 percent on1 April. A number of organizations includingTrade Union Federation COSATU, The CapeChamber of Commerce and Industry and theWestern Cape government vehemently ob-
jected to it.Two days before the increase was meant
to kick in, Metrorail announced that it haddecided on a 13 percent increase instead, afterconsulting with labour and business. Themove was widely welcomed, although Pro-vincial Transport MEC Robin Carlisle insist-ed that 13 percent was still too steep and ac-cused COSATU and the Cape Chamber of“selling out” commuters.
But on Monday morning things turnedsour when commuters were left to fork outmuch more than they bargained for. Peoplebuying their monthly tickets had to dig deepand were furious at the thought of paying somuch more for their tickets.
Tamsyn Fredericks, who travels from Re-treat to Observatory for work every morningwas supposed to pay R215 for her monthlyticket, but on Monday, she had to pay R326.“It completely threw me out. I prepared forthe increase, but when it came to R326 I wasconfused.” Fortunately Fredericks had theextra money to pay for her ticket.
Another commuter, Jessica Ecksteen Mor-kel, who travels from Athlone to Cape Towneveryday, says she’s not that concerned bythe increase, but feels that Metrorail needsto improve its service. “People who get paidweekly are suffering the most because theirbosses deduct from their salaries becauseMetrorail has “technical difficulties” andpeople get to work late. It’s unacceptable. Allgood and well they increase their fares, but
is the service going to improve?”Metrorail’s regionalmanager,Mthuthuzeli
Swartz, says: “The system problem is regret-table and we are doing everything within ourpower to correct the fares.”
To calculate how much your monthly ticketshould cost go to Metrorail’s Transport Infor-mation Centre, their ticket offices, or use thefare calculator on their website,www.capemetrorail.co.za.

IF the pressure of taking centre stage toperform at the annual Cape Malay Choir
Board competitions was not dauntingenough, imagine doing so with a team com-prising of dozens of inexperienced young-sters.
The Young Men Sporting Club did justthat, and their accolades this year includedefending their Top Eight and Silver Fezhonours, historically becoming the firstteam to have ever successfully defendedboth titles.
To add to their achievement, they won nu-merous first prizes in various categoriesand walked away as sectional winners, see-ing six months of preparation come to frui-tion.
The Mitchell’s Plain-based outfit was ini-tially established in 1938 in an area of Dis-trict Six known as the “Dry Docks”, goingby the name of “Jonge Mens Kultuur Klub”.As the years went on, the name changed to“Jonge Mens” and in the early ’50s, it settledon its current name.
Today, the teamhas 135members, agedbe-tween 15 and 75. The group initially startedwith about 30 to 40 members.
Abduraghmaan Morris, president andcoach of the team, was delighted at the out-come of the competitions’ events. “We as theolder members are starting to hand over tothe younger ones in order for this team to
grow. This is what the team is all about – fo-cusing on handing over from generation togeneration and building relationships.”
In response to their sterling defence of thetitles, Morris was quick to mention the“tough competition” during this year’s leg,but was also relieved to note that a “very highstandard” was maintained.
“We worked very hard to improve on ourperformances of last year. We knew that wewould have to top that to walk away as cham-pions and indeed, that is what happened,” adelighted Morris explains.
When asked about their winning formula,Morris says that the right music and freshperformances were required, with hours oftraining and dedication.
“Lots of effort was required in preparation. Some of the guys worked three to four timesa week, just practising, and to me that wasour winning formula.
“The dedication was shown by the team,”Morris concludes.
Young Men Sporting Club might have se-cured the major prizes in 2011 and 2012, butare already looking to make it three in a row.

OK, assuming you’re guilty, let’s examine why?“The bank gives me security.”“The bank gives me accessibility.”“The bank gives me interest.”“After tax and inflation, hold on?Hey, I’m actually losing money!!!”Exactly!Your rationale: “I don’t know where else to put it.”“Markets are too volatile, property prices are tanking, bonds aren’t much better.”Don’t worry. Read on. Unit trusts are the way to go.• They do not lock you in.• You can get access to your money in one day - without penalties.• You can miss monthly payments. Also, no penalties.• Plus, no up front admin fees, so your money works from day one. And, here’s the really good bit, thanks to the power of compounding overtime, your returns promise to far exceed anything you imagined possible.Let’s put it another way. A SHOT in the arm can help keep fluaway.
The provincial health department will berolling out a flu vaccination campaign till 30June where a total of 100 000 vaccine doseswill be available.
This will be offered free of charge and havebeen allocated to all districts.
People who are part of the department’s“priority groups” are encouraged to go totheir nearest health facility to request theshot.
Priority groups include:. Adults or children at high risk for flu-re-
lated complications because of underlyingmedical conditions, including chronic pul-monary diseases (such as asthma), cardio-vascular diseases (except hypertension), re-nal, hepatic, neurologic, haematologic ormetabolic disorders (including diabetes),morbid obesity and immunosuppression (in-cluding HIV-infected people)
. Pregnant women – irrespective of stageof pregnancy
. Children aged six months to four years
. Residents of old-age homes and otherchronic care or rehabilitation facilities
. Children aged 6 months to 18 years onlong-term aspirin therapy
. People aged 65 years and olderProvincial health minister Theuns Botha,
explains: “The vaccination campaign formspart of our strategy to boost people’s immunesystems, so that their bodies are less vulnera-ble to disease. Our long-term aim is to in-crease wellness – that is a society where peo-ple are healthy and strong and able to go to
work every day and live the life they value.Flu vaccinations are only steps on that roadand serve as building-blocks towards ahealthier society.”
The aim of the flu campaign is to highlightthe need for vaccination before and duringthe flu season, and to ensure that availablevaccines are used.
Other preventative measures include:. Avoid close contact with people who are
sick. When you are sick, keep your distancefrom others to protect them from getting in-fected too.
. If possible, stay home from work, schoolor errands when you are sick.
This will prevent others from catchingyour illness.
. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissuewhen coughing or sneezing. It may preventthose around you from getting sick.
. Washing your hands often will help pro-tect you from germs.
If soap and water are not available, use analcohol-based hand rub.
. Germs are often spread when a persontouches something that is contaminated withgerms and then touches his or her eyes, noseor mouth.
. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluidsand eat nutritious food.
The vaccination will be available at com-munity health centres and clinics. The De-partment plans to use all avenues and chan-nels in communities, which may includedoor-to-door campaigns, vaccination at pen-sion pay points, old age homes and schools,in order to reach targeted groups.

Page 12 People’s Post Mitchell's Plain LEADER Tuesday 10 April 2012
Carnage continuesAT last count, more than 100 people had beenkilled on South African roads over the Easterweekend.
Although this figure is down compared to2011 when more than 200 people lost theirlives on the road, this in no way minimisesthe impact from loss of lives.
Easter is a time of worship for Christianscelebrating the resurrection of Jesus fromdeath, it is a joyous time to spend with familyand friends; not intended for mourning.
On 3 April, Transport and Public WorksMEC Robin Carlisle expressed his hope for nofatalities in the province on the roads at East-er. This was not to be.
Among others: In the Western Cape, twopeople diedwhenacar and twobakkies collid-ed in Eerste Rivier; in Limpopo six peopledied in a head-on collision and another fivewere killed in a head on crash in Durban.
This, despite nationwide road safety cam-paigns which targeted fatigue managementon all major routes, saw Emergency MedicalRescue on standby in high risk locationsalong several highways and provided a hot-line to report dangerous or reckless driving.
Traffic services monitored speed limit en-forcement, drunk driving, unroadworthy ve-hicles and pedestrian safety.
The authorities have done everything intheir power – from Operation Exodus to theArrive Alive Road Safety Campaign – to keepSouth Africans safe on the roads, short ofphysically climbing behind the wheel anddriving themselves.
When all is said and done, primary and ulti-mate responsibility rests with the person en-trusted behind the wheel.
Every driver is well aware of the murder-ous implications of driving drunk, speedingand driving unroadworthy vehicles, yetmany, in the foolhardy belief that “it will nev-er happen to me”, risk their lives, that of theirpassengers and innocent fellow motorists.
Next Easter, can we turn Carlisle’s hope ofzero road fatalities into a reality?
A big thank you!MY name is Bernadette Jansen and I wouldlike to thank the driver of a Cape Town toMitchell’s Plain taxi, who picked up my hus-band and I at 18:00 on Monday 12 March in Ei-sleben Road.
We were on our way to the day hospital andit was only through the grace of God that wemade it, because Jesus took over the wheel
and guided us.God kept that driver calm and we made it,
but my husband was already dead on arrival. Thanks to the passenger it was an extraordi-
nary experience.I know you were traumatised, but God
works in mysterious ways. My sincere thanksto everybody involved.
May God bless you abundantly.BERNADETTE JANSENWoodlands
YourSMSesTaxi troubles
. The arrogant respons-es by those taxi drivers toMr Loonat proves thatthese guys have absolutelyno respect for the rules ofthe road nor fellow motor-ists.
. Mr Loonat did not lis-ten to parasites and oppor-tunists, but to men whohave been in this industryfor more than 20 years. Be-cause they are not educat-ed, they have been over-looked and remained driv-ers. They were never giventhe opportunity to becomea proud permit holder.Thank you for the servicethat you provide to ourcommunities. This was notabout oversaturating theroute, but rather the dor-mant permits that have be-come available and given totaxi owners who already
are permit holders. A hu-man rights activist
. What age are the taxiowners now who ‘built upbusiness and routes over120 years’? And what vehi-cles were used then? Meg,
In response. Thanks, Farieda and
Karima. Atheists like RedBull and Jason Bosch needlessons in respect fromMuslims, Jews and Chris-tians alike. Our faiths cre-ated science, Jason. “Thefool says in his heart:‘There is no God.’” Ein-stein, Kepler, Newton, Ar-ab mathematicians and as-tronomers were not fools,Jason.
. I agree with Desperate.I am 49 years old, single andunemployed. I am a parentwith two dependants. Ihave been without work fortwo years and I am finan-cially frustrated becausenobody wants to help. Youare either over-experi-enced, underqualified oroveraged. So what do youdo? Go to the streets or runa shebeen to put bread on
the table?
Train of thought. Vandalism is not the
only thing that destroystrains; poor maintenancedoes too.
. I fail to understand theprice hike as commutershave been struggling withthe service for years. I haveused trains to get to schooland to work. No announce-ments are made when thereare problems on the line –we just stand on the plat-form, not knowing what’shappening. Imagine anhour without communica-tion. What happened to therailway buses we used tohave when there were can-cellations?
By the way. The Department of
Transport tells us, the mo-torists, to obey the rules ofthe road. I have seen howDial-a-Ride drivers in theirwhite Toyota Corollas over-take other vehicles on solidwhite lines on numerousoccasions. What’s up withthat?
I JUST want to express my disgust at the or-ganisers of the Strandfontein under 13 tour-nament. The eventual winners, Lucky Stars, fielded illegal and over-aged players. It wasdisputed by several clubs including Santos,Ajax and Kenpark. The Ajax coach told theStrandfontein disciplinary committee thatthree of the Lucky Stars’ players were atAjax three years ago for U13 trials, how canthese boys still be U13?
Furthermore, there were players fromSantos who recognized some of the LuckyStars players as they go to school togetherand they all say these boys are at least 16years old. Even the chairman of the Mitch-ell’s Plain Local Football Association saidLucky Stars should be suspended as they arebeing dishonest. What I want to know is; haswinning become so important that we forgetour values? I had an incident with theircoach on the field after they beat Juventus2-0 and it’s not about being a sore loser, butrather the dishonesty of the Lucky StarsFootball Club. On approaching the Strand-fontein organizing committee, they saidthere’s nothing they can do about it and thatwe must just play the game otherwise wewould disgrace the tournament.
I find this improper and unacceptable. Weas the Juventus Football Club are seriouslyreconsidering entering this competitionnext year, and the likes of Santos and Ajaxfeel the same.
We also never saw the reporter from Peo-ple’s Post, Liam Moses, who reported on thematch (the final), so I don’t know were he gothis report from.
The underdogs never won the event andI would like to see him investigate Lucky
Stars Football Club before filing a report.SHAUN ADONISJuventus U13 coachThis issue caused concern for us as organisersas we have always prided ourselves by acting au-thoratiatively This issue caused great concernfor us as organisers as we on the whole ‘over-age’issue and dealing with it as early as possible inthe tournament. The registration team did allthey could to ensure that the necessary compli-ance requirements were met in terms of SAFA’sregistration criteria and the club as host was obli-gated to act within the confines of that mandate. We have, as an immediate response, undertakento formalise a refined process of the convenors, checking players taking to the field against theinfo listed on the team sheet, along with the play-ers’ SAFA cards as per the squad registration. Wehope this will eliminate any room for doubt. How-ever, it is incumbent on each team’s managementto ensure that players in their squad meet the agegroup criteria in order to entrench the spirit ofour great game and not put young players at therisk of public exposure for what are essentiallyselfish motives by certain individuals. It is alsonecessary to apologise to those teams, playersand management, who were negatively affectedby any allegations levelled at them. All the play-ers had 2012 SAFA cards, therefore we were obli-gated to let them play. At the time of the allegedplayers being recognised, they were in posses-sion of a valid SAFA card indicating their eligi-bility. The disciplinary committee, of which Iwas the chairperson, requested the parties to putforward concrete proof that the players are over-age. They could not, therefore we could not acton hearsay. The runner-up team managementwas present and they were quite happy with theprocess we took to check the eligibility of theplayers.Sharief ChristianSTRANDFONTEIN FC JUNIOR CHAIRMAN
People’s Post sports reporter Liam Moses was at the tour-nament on Sunday 25 March and received all the infor-mation in his article first hand. No evidence of age cheat-ing was witnessed at any time during any of the gameson that day. Neither the coach of the Fish Hoek FC, thelosing finalists, or the tournament organisers men-tioned anything about overage players to the reporter. For further information, contact Moses on 021 713 9448.

THANK YOU! FIVE-YEAR PLAN (IDP) 2012/13 - 2016/17Cape Town would like your comments once again
During September and October 2011 we asked you to tell us how you wanted to shape the plan for Cape Town for the next five years. We heard you Cape Town and now we bring an overview of your new

The IDP is the plan that informs the draft budget and operations of the City over the next five years. THE Vadhini Indian ArtsAcademy, a non profit or-ganisation, will be host-ing Amritam, a Bharatan-atyam recital with a freshapproach.
Amritam, meaning Di-vine Nectar, will includesome of India’s richestand most famous poetry, emulating the divinity ofthe Supreme Being.
Inspired by the excel-lent music, choreogra-pher Kumar Sarve-shanhas deviates fromthe conventional con-structs of a Bharatan-atyam Recital, to stringtogether a performancewhich is accessible to allmembers of the audience.
The aesthetics and theoretical accuracyhas remained the main focus.
While this has been an exploration of thespirit (and self) for the choreographer andperformers, much thought has been givento ensure that audiences are introduced tothe richness of a Bharatanatyam Recital ina gentle manner, to ensure that they un-derstand the intent of the poet and per-former at all times.
Directed by Shrimati Darshana Rama,Amritam is performed by a cast of dancersdedicated to the preservation and sharingof this most ancient of Arts.
They captivate with their easy grace, their athletic prowess, their strength ofcharacter and their quiet dignity.
The dance recital takes place at the Bax-ter Theatre on Thursday 12 and Friday 13April. Tickets are available at Computick-et and cost R120.
ACCLAIMED actor, playwright and directorSam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Bur-ied Child, translated into Afrikaans as Dood-snikke, debuted at the ABSA Klein Karoo Na-tional Arts Festival in Oudshoorn, and willbe followed by a season at the Baxter TheatreCentre’s Flipside from 12 April to 5 May at19:00 nightly.
Director Janice Honey-man has assembled a formi-dable cast and team of thea-tre blue-bloods to bring tolife this explosive familydrama, which combinesdark humour and horror, and is translated and adapt-ed by Saartjie Botha.
Performed two-thirds inAfrikaans and a third inEnglish, the play will havesubtitles at the Baxter.
Gys de Villiers, Anna-Mart van der Merwe, OscarPetersen and Ivan Abra-hams are joined by up-and-coming young tal-ents Albert Pretorius, Travis Snyders andThenjiwe Stemela to make up the power-house ensemble. Joining the creative teamis award-winning lighting designer MannieManim, set designer Patrick Curtis and cos-tume designer Birrie le Roux. Since it wasfirst performed in 1978, the play has beenwidely regarded as Shepard’s best play. Ithas been universally acclaimed as a work ofextraordinary vision and force and has beendescribed as brilliant and powerful.
The production has been taken out of itsoriginal Midwestern American setting andplaced locally in the Northern Cape in the’90s, as a desperate and dysfunctional farm-ing family spirals out of control as they tryto conceal an unimaginable secret.
In a context of disappointment and disillu-sionment with the Rainbow Nation dream, they wrestle with the disintegration of tradi-tional family structures and values in an en-vironment that is loaded with deep-seated
unhappiness and suppressed violence.“As compelling and eccentric as it is, it is
also very funny in a dark way,” says Honey-man. There are elements of the thriller in theway the play unfolds – it’s sort of Twin Peaksmeets Blue Velvet, Pleasantville and Days ofHeaven combined, but with a real local fla-
vour. I also get a chance towork with some of the dar-lings of South African thea-tre.”
“The parallels betweenMidwest America in the ’70s(where and when the play isoriginally set) and parts ofSouth Africa in the ’90s werestriking. “There were strongreverberations for the storyto work in our country soonafter it became a democra-cy,” adds Botha.
Considered one of Ameri-ca’s most influential and cele-brated playwrights of the
20th century, Shepard is also an accom-plished screenwriter and musician. By 1980,he was the most produced playwright inAmerica after Tennessee Williams. In thepast 40 years, he has written over 45 plays,11 of which have won Obie Awards.
As an actor, Shepard is well-known for hisroles in several box-office-hit movies such asSafe House (currently on circuit), Fair Game, and Black Hawk Down.

FORoldermembersofCapeTown’s soccerfraternity the name Battswood FootballClub brings back memories of the glorydays of the ’80s when the team was one ofthe best in Cape Town.
The side is still fondly remembered fortheir exploits on the soccer field, the trophiesthey won and for producing some of the mosttalented footballers to come from the city.
Unfortunately, the success did not last toolong into the professional era of local footballand in recent times Battswood teams havefailed to emulate the successes of their prede-cessors. Despite this, the club seems to havemade a lasting impact on some of its finest
products and success could soon return toBattswood.
Adeed Abrahams, who was the team’s first-choice goalkeeper during their halcyon daysof the ’80s, is one of many players who havepassed through the doors of this famous club.
Apart from the success he achieved withthe team, Abrahams also won several indi-vidual awards – including Western ProvinceFootball Board Player of the Year in 1982 and1986, South African Council on Sport (Sacos)Sportsman of the Year in 1986, and the SouthAfrican Soccer Federation Professional Foot-baller of the Year award in 1986.
Abrahams believes that the values helearned at the club is what helped him toachieve this and he has now returned toBattswood, along with a group of other
former stars, in an attempt to help restore theclub to its former glory.
“We thought that when we moved on, theyounger generation would come through, like we did when we played and we took overand we started becoming the chairman andthe treasurer,” says Abrahams.
“But nobody came through to the extentthat there was progression. So we decidedthat we are going to come back and try andrevive or put back into the club and get to apoint where at least there is going to be somestructure when you get to a coaching ses-sion.”
Other Battswood legends who are back atthe club are Trevor Rossouw – who was theteam’s coach during the ’80s – Ian Southgateand Vincent Barnes, the former Proteas as-
sistant coach. The group have been back atthe club for just over two months and havebeen working on improving the coachingstructures at junior levels. Although thegroup hopes that Battswood will once againplay alongside the best clubs in South Africa,Abrahams said that the immediate goal is tomake the club attractive to young players.
“I think that’s the overall picture. We needto start here with the kids. We need to makeBattswood an attraction to make childrenwant to come and play for the club,” said Ab-rahams.
“Because we can’t compete with Ajax andSantos because of their infrastructure, wehave to make do with what we have. We areprepared to do that because we have done itbefore.”

A SPONSORSHIP worth morethan R50 000 has been se-
cured by Westridge FootballClub, which is based at theStephan Reagan sports complex.
Jeffrey Adams, a spokespersonfor the team, says the kit for all oftheir teams will be sponsored bySwift Human Resources. This is amassive boost because they usuallystruggle to find kit sponsors. “Itmeans a lot because we have beenseeking sponsorship for quite awhile. And for Swift Human Re-sources to come on board like thisis a major stepping stone,” says Ad-ams. “At least now we can manageto kit out our entire club. We cannow go out there and show theworld that Westridge is a team to bereckoned with.”
Adams added that in the past allof the club’s age group teams wouldbe sponsored by different compa-nies or members of the community.“The managers used to go and ac-quire individual sponsors per team.Having one major sponsor coveringour entire club is really phenome-nal. Especially in this day and agewhen trying to find sponsorship isvery difficult” Apart from payingfor the kit, the sponsors will also as-
sist the club with improving itsplaying facilities and have new sig-nage erected at the ground.
Arashaad Obaray, a director atSwift Human Resources, says thatthe sponsorship came about after
share and plough back into the com-munity, and to see the youngsters, and also the senior players, benefitfrom our success.” This is the firsttime that the companyhasprovideda sponsorship of this size.
