At the midway point we pause for respite. Although many may see the 34km P è L e r i n a g e as a recovery day, it’s what we think cycling in the Alps is all about; a chance to take in the views, stop and reflect, whilst climbing one of the most stunning roads of the region.Be excited if you like hairpins and half days!

And so it begins. With over one hundred miles of constant climbing or decending and four categorised climbs over one thousand metres, L e G r a n d D é p a r t will soon decide who is ready. This first stage is a beautiful ride over lesser known tarmac and, although not the steepest nor the altitude of later stages, it will certainly challenge and inspire.

This daunting classic route takes on the fabled trinity of the c o l d u T é l é g r a p h e ( c at 1 ) , the c o l d u G a l i b i e r ( h c ) and the iconic A l p e D ’ h u e z ( h c ) . Test yourself on the stage where many a Tour narrative has been set and several winners crowned. The V o i e C l a s s i q u e at 134km may provide the toughest test in terms of climbing but be warned; at this early point in the P è L e r i n a g e don’t burn all your matches. After the stage we will celebrate with a meal out before we return with tired legs to the chalet for some well earned rest. The longest and the toughest stage means an early start for all and lights on bikes. As we follow the cars down into the valley from Navette we prepare for another assualt on the c o l d e l a m a d e l e i n e , this time on the classic route from the north. We aim to reach the summit at sunrise and a chance to experience the view over a second breakfast. The final challenge really begins as we continue on the soon to be legendary 214km stage of the P è L e r i n a g e . The route continues to roll upwards as we climb the C O L D E L’ i s e r a n the highest paved mountain pass (2770m) in the Alps and our final summit. After a quick celebratory coffee we roll down to Bourg Saint Maurice and to the finish. Pilgrimage complete. P é l e r i n a g e f i n !

Congratulations on accepting the challenge to participate in the inaugural ‘Pèlerinage’, which takes place from the 2nd to the 9th of August 2014.

‘Pèlerinage’ is being brought to you by the nice people of the EnMasse cycling club. Our aim has always been to create a true test, both physical and mental, that could be tackled within an enjoyable, social and safe environment. With ‘Pèlerinage’ we have designed a parcour that will challenge any rider, but has a flexible support system that allows the majority to join in. It enables cycling fans to play on the same roads as Le Tour, taking in some of bike racing’s most iconic Alpine climbs. But this is not about pretending you are a pro rider! ‘Pèlerinage’ is about group cycling EnMasse. Swapping stories, sharing the wind and helping your fellow participants to conquer the terrain. If you are looking to smash your PB this may not be the trip for you, as EnMasse rides by the ethos of the ‘grupetto’.

Alongside the punishing climbs, stunning vistas and fast long descents we want this to be a truly pleasurable journey. This means good wholesome food, consumed for both joy and energy, central accommodation to reduce stress and the occasional glass of wine or beer on the sun terrace.

We look forward to welcoming you to France in August and hope this adventure will be as fulfilling as it is challenging.

Bonne chance!

Perched high on the mountainside above the valley road, chalet Navette provides stunning views across the Savoie region of the Rhone Alps between the towns of Albertville and Moutier. It will be our base for the entire week of ‘Pèlerinage’ providing a relaxing and tranquil home for all cyclists and guests.

Your stay includes seven nights bed and breakfast in the ecologically renovated 1640 farmhouse and you will share accommodation with a fellow cyclist, with all rooms benefitting from en suite facilities. The house itself boasts a private pool and jacuzzi to rest your weary legs, a sun terrace with views across the Alps to enjoy a glass of local wine and central lounge and dining room with an open fire.

Being based in a single location allows all cyclists to truly recuperate when off the bike without the constant stress of packing and unpacking each day. All you have to worry about is cycling, resting and enjoying yourself. We look forward to welcoming you to chalet Navette and are sure you will find it as relaxing as we do.

Whilst on the bike you will never be on your own. With every eight participating cyclists there will be two guide riders who will navigate, keep you informed about any upcoming obstacles or issues, support you during mechanical problems and occasionally take the wind.

Accompanying the grupetto at all times will be two support vehicles who will always be reachable for food, spares and water. In the main van each cyclist will be allowed to carry a small bag of personal items, to include extra apparel for changes in weather, your favourite energy products or any bike specific items you may require but don’t wish to carry. Our support staff won’t only be driving you around, they will also be refilling bottles, taking photos, procuring lunch and spurring you on. So if you see them with a camera aside the road be sure to smile. If you are having a bad day the comfort and respite of the van will never be far away.

Off the bike, as well as preparing your evening meals, support staff will present the parcours for the next days riding and will be happy to answer any questions or worries you have about the stage. There will also be mechanical support with a basic level of servicing available. Bike stands and standard tools will be at your disposal but if you require any specific tools for your bike you must bring them along. For any major issues there are several bike shops close to chalet Navette and en route.
