INTRODUCTION
HYDRAULIC FRACTURINGHydraulic fracturing is a process used by drilling companiesto increase the amount of oil and gas that is produced from
h ll F t i i d ft th ll h b d ill deach well. Fracturing is done after the well has been drilledinto the formation.A fluid consisting of water, proppants (either sand orceramic beads), and chemicals is injected into the well atextremely high pressures until eventually the rock, clay, compacted sand or coal fracturescompacted sand, or coal fractures. The fractures generally travel a few hundred feet, althoughfracturing fluids have been known to travel 3,000 feet awayf th ll Th f t th h ld b thfrom the well. These fractures are then held open by thesand or ceramic, enabling the oil & gas to flow more freelyout of the well
HYDRAULIC FRACTURINGAfter the well has been fractured, the oil or gas is extractedfrom the formation.D i th t ti th f t i fl id lDuring the extraction process, the fracturing fluid, alongwith any water present in the rocks before fracturing arepartially removed with the oil and gasSide Effect of HFBecause hydraulic fracturing is highly variable andunpredictable and because drinking water supplies areunpredictable, and because drinking water supplies areextremely precious resources, numerous concerns havebeen raised regarding the potential for hydraulic fracturingt t i t d i ki t lito contaminate drinking water supplies.
HYDRAULIC FRACTURING IN SHALE FORMATIONSHALE FORMATION
Oil and Gas ShaleH d li f t i i t h l d f l fHydraulic fracturing is a proven technology used safely formore than 60 years in more than a million wells. It uses water pressure to create fissures in deepp punderground shale formations that allow oil and natural gasto flow.First used in the U S in 1947 the technology has beenFirst used in the U.S. in 1947, the technology has beencontinuously improved upon since that time.Recent innovations combining this technology withh i t l d illi i h l f ti h l k d thorizontal drilling in shale formations has unlocked vastnew supplies of natural gas, allowing the US to get to theenergy it needs today, and transforming US energy ingy y g gyfuture.
