It looks like summer has finally arrived after a number of stops and starts. Who
remembers snow and sleet on May 12!?This issue we are not fighting any
government legislation detrimental to the car hobby. Instead, we are promoting getting your cars out onto the streets and highways for the pure enjoyment of driving or attending events.
WOW what a spring and early summer! It was either too hot, you had no power or it was too wet; those who have cruise nights were getting rained out almost 50% of the time as were the drag race series. It took three tries for the TNT racers to get off one of their events. So we will forget those early months and concentrate on the rest of the season.
No matter what day of the week, you can find a cruise night near you. Get out your favourite specialty car and support the cruises, car events, races and anything else car related.
Here are a few of the dozens of events to go to that have caught our eye. P.I. will be having a seminar on Edelbrock’s E-Force Superchargers on Monday, Sept. 16, get all your questions answered by Edelbrock’s Cary Redmond!

_HISTORY
How is that for a car review? Was the driver experiencing a new Ferrari or the latest exotic sports car?
Nope. In this case, the car was the 1901 Henry Ford Sweepstakes race car, and the driver who gave it that review after driving it recently was none other than NASCAR
superstar Carl Edwards. How can a man who has driven some of
the best race cars in the world, at speeds that most of us can’t imagine, be so fasci-nated with a car that would seem crude and rudimentary to the average car buyer today?
It’s simple, really. Carl, and the lucky
few who have driven Sweepstakes in the last decade, have all been fascinated by the car itself, the innovative technology (for 1901) put together by Mr. Ford and his three assistants, using what they knew, along with what they felt would help make the car competitive in the Grosse Pointe race.
Think about it in terms of a modern race car: it sat lower than the competition, and thus probably more aerodynamic. It was lighter than the competition, and thus competitive with less horsepower. And it used early forms of fuel injection and featured the first use of ceramic-encased spark coils (precursor of the modern spark plug), so it was ahead of its time in engine development.
But Carl and the others also understood Sweepstakes’ place in automotive history: how Mr. Ford had failed in his previous automotive ventures, and was “swinging for the fences” by entering a race against some-one, Alexander Winton, who truly was the greatest racer in America at that time.
What that upset victory on Oct. 10, 1901 meant to Mr. Ford, and eventually the automotive industry itself, cannot be understated.

“The coolest car I have ever driven.”

Photograph by W.D. Benham, Detroit, 1918 “Ten Mile Race between Henry Ford (in No.4) and Alexander Winton at Old Blue Ribbon Race Track, East Jefferson Avenue opposite present site of Hudson Motor Car Company. October 10th 1901. Time 13 minutes, 23 4/5 seconds, 45.33 miles per hour. Ford won. Lee Cuson, mechanic. 999 built 2 years later.” Uncredited in the photo is Spider Huff, his riding mechanic, sitting low on Mr. Ford’s left side.
Ford’s win changed everything for him, and ultimately, the history of the auto indus-try. Several people watching that day came forward with offers of financial support, which set him on the road to establishing Ford Motor Company in June 1903. Ford went on to prove his belief in low-cost pro-duction with the Model T, the car that put the world on wheels.
“To think that this car is what started this whole thing is just amazing.” Edwards reflected. “If it weren’t for this, there might not be a Ford Motor Company, there might not be a Ford Racing, and a lot of people’s, including my own, paths would be very different.”
On a side note, I’ve been lucky to have been there when both Carl and NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett drove the car. These are both men who have won cham-pionships and races at the highest level of the sport. But, after experiencing a drive of Sweepstakes, both men reached one other conclusion: that Mr. Ford was indeed a very
brave man to drive that car, in that race, at that speed.
“It may not look like much standing here, or on video, but I am telling you that is one of the scariest things I have ever done,” said Edwards on the grounds of Greenfield Vil-lage at The Henry Ford. “Coming around that turn back there, there are no brakes. I don’t know how those guys did that because we were only going what, eight miles per hour? They drove this thing near 70 mph back in 1901. That is just insane.”
It’s perhaps why Mr. Ford said “never again” after the race, and hired professionals to drive his race cars from then on. Both Edwards and Jarrett had great respect for Henry Ford, the automotive icon, but they also gained great respect for Henry Ford, the race car driver, and Spider Huff, his riding mechanic, after sitting up high in the seat of Sweepstakes. •

_CSCS
The instant the door hit old man winter as he reluctantly trundled on, the event
season began to heat up from Southern Ontario all the way to Quebec. Just --just being relative to your fuel economy of course-- outside of Toronto the sport compact season was ushered in by the fi rst round of the Canadian Sport Compact Series (CSCS) held at Toronto Motorsports Park Cayuga.
Th ere eager drift ers, time attackers, and 1/4 mile junkies could shake the rust off from a particularly long off season slumber and ‘prove it on the track.’
With drag, drift , and time attack getting increasingly more competitive year aft er year drivers were pushing their limits to prove they were the best out and set the correct tone for the season.
Th is lead to several broken track
records in round one and that momentum transferred over into round two where records were more were broken still with competitors jockeying to prove they are number one. Th ese friendly rivalries which carry over from one event to another are what make the Canadian Sport Compact Series very exciting from a spectator’s point of view.
At every CSCS event a stone’s throw away

from the track, show and shine participants get together to showcase their latest modifications and catch up with friends they may not have seen since season end the year before.
Several cars received both visual and mechanical makeovers while some projects were scraped entirely in favor of new ones. As I walked around the vast show fields at both the season opener and second round I
couldn’t help but be thankful that I was just there to take photos and not judge.
As the only local compact car series it’s great to see CSCS continue to do well year after year, and that’s a direct result of the hard work the organizers put in day in and day out.
If you ever get the chance to attend a CSCS event I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. •

Shortly aft er the fi rst round of CSCS Nine-O-Five Rides, a long-standing local car club, had their third annual Truck & Tuner
expo. On the day of the TNT Expo the weatherman called for the worst but aft er a few morning showers the dark clouds parted and by mid aft ernoon those who made the trek to Fireman’s park were rewarded for their resilience with awesome weather.
With its sprawling grassy fi elds dotted with trees Fireman’s park is a great venue to have a car show and a welcome change from the more standard typical parking venue. Event wise the vehicle limbo was easy enough to capture through photos but sadly there’s no way for me to convey through print just how loud the Ford that won the
exhaust contest actually was. He simply blew away the competition, something to be said for the power of an open header.
At three years young it’s impressive how much this show has grown and some have begun to call it the replacement to the much loved, and now deceased, Scrape By Th e Lake.
While I never got a chance to attend Scrape in its infancy I’m told that show started off very similar to TNT. It may be putting the cart a bit ahead of the horse in hoping this show grows to that level but the potential is certainly there.
Only good things can be on the horizon for TNT Expo. •

_Eurokracy
Finally, outside of the city in the land of Poutine
and cheap alcohol, Eurokracy 2013 took place at Naiper Dragway in Montreal. Th is event brought out some of the lowest, fastest and cleanest euros Canada and the surrounding area has to off er, as well as a few notable ‘outcasts’ (that is non European) as well.
Aft er hearing nothing but good things
about Eurokracy for two straight years, I decided 2013 was the year to make the voyage from Toronto to Montreal to check things out fi rst-hand.
Being a terrible navigator, I opted to join the Scraped Crusaders for their cruise down and as the convoy got larger stop aft er stop, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed in the show the following day.
With a turnout large enough to create
a serious impact on highway traffi c, Eurokracy 2013 certainly lived up to its “Canada’s Finest European Automotive Event” moniker. It is easily one of the best and well organized events I’ve ever attended.
A noteworthy stand out attribute of Eurokracy is the fact the owners of the venue were 100% behind everything the organizers had planned and were oft en

the push people needed to go all out in the crowd pleasing burnout competition.
Another big benefit to the Napierville Dragway is that the ¼ mile was viewable from nearly any location in the facility. This meant that if you were looking at a car in the show field and heard something angry revving up you could turn around and catch the tail end of the pass no problem.
This is something I’ve yet to experience at any local GTA venues and it really helped everything feel like one event as opposed to a show and shine event that just happened to be happening at the same time as a drag event.
The underdog story of the day was a small CRX managing to edge out an Audi R8 in the quarter mile proving once again it’s not the size of the dog in the fight that
matters, it’s the size dog the fight in the dog.
With so many cars in attendance I kept telling myself to take more photos in order to somewhat accurately portray the scale of the show but as soon as I got home the first thing I asked myself was “why did I take so many photos?”, funny how that always seems to be the case.

Artist and designer Gerry Judah has created a gravity-defying sculpture that holds three iconic Porsche sports cars 35 metres high in the sky. The sculpture was the
centrepiece at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England.
Judah was commissioned by Porsche GB to create the sculp-ture as a celebration of 50 years of the Porsche 911. The sculpture has three futuristic white, steel “arrows” that race upwards, each with an example of the 911 at its apex. The models incorporated in the sculpture are: the 1963 Original 911, the 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and the 2013 911.
Weighing over 22 tonnes, each leg of the sculpture is a monocoque made of steel plate welded together with no internal structure. It balances on points at the base that are extremely narrow. The sculpture is finished in a clean white coating, giving it an elegant simplicity.
Gerry Judah said: “I had to create a sculpture that personifies the energy and excitement not only of these beautiful cars, but also the Festival of Speed. The 911 is a fantastic shape that can’t be deconstructed or embellished, so in this context, the sculpture had to provide the right platform for the car to soar up and shine in the sky.”
“The concept was that each car is shooting into the sky, sup-porting one another, racing each other, captured in a perfect moment. Like the cars it displays, the sculpture is superbly engineered, lightweight and reflective of the Porsche 911 itself: simple, pure and built for the job.” •

Legendary Canadian artist Jeff Norwell, that’s who. If you read any of the current Hot Rod magazines,
you have seen Jeff’s work, If you are involved in the advertising business, you have also seen his work. Jeff creates story boards for film companies, advertising renderings for agencies representing brands like Oh Henry, Coca Cola, and many others. Jeff’s work is in demand from all over North America.
So, when it was time to celebrate his milestone, Jeff did it like he does everything, “TO THE MAX.”
Invitations were sent out to join him at his home on June 29 for “The Palookaville 50.” Rockabilly band “The Millwinders” were hired and caterers brought in. Jeff’s goal was to fill his property with interesting hot rods and lots of friends. Goal achieved.
Happy Birthday, Jeff, keep up the good work! •

Diggers, Funnies, Gassers and Altereds Author: Bob McClurg • 204 So bound pages
• 200 Colour and 150 B/W photos • SACT521 • $29.95
Just in time to coincide with our story on the ONDR, Car Tech has released their book about the golden age of drag racing in paperback
Featuring a forward by the legendary John Force. Th ere was a time in drag racing when creativity ran rampant, and innovation was the name of the game. Every class had its own rules, every car had its own look, every team had its own agenda, and every driver had his own style.
From the 1960s through the 1970s, the sport grew and changed dramatically, and it all happened in front of Bob McClurg’s camera.
McClurg is an accomplished magazine writer and photographer, but he’s best known for his drag racing images of the 1960s and 1970s. His lens captured all of the exciting action of the Roadsters, Gassers, Altereds, Top Fuel, Funny Cars, Pro Stocks, and even the modern age of nostalgia drag racing.
Follow each of the classes as they evolve, each year bringing more speed and lower elapsed times. Follow the exciting careers of “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, “TV Tommy” Ivo, “Big John” Mazmanian, and many more.
Now available in paperback for the fi rst time, McClurg’s best drag racing photos are brought together in one volume—a book that is a necessary addition to any drag racing fan’s library.•

Maxim Lemoine, 21, likes to ride BMX bikes and skateboards. Like any other young man his
age looking to find his identity in this world of high expectations, he might not care now, but these days he’s a big deal. As 2012 Drift Mania (DMCC) Pro-Am Champ, Maxim is well on his way to having a successful 2013 PRO season. He would probably like you to know that he is still the same kid who likes to ride bikes and go around with a huge smile on his face. Lately, he’s taken to having his hair cut in a mullet, to which his English-
speaking friends stated, “Business in the front/Party in the back,” just like his Chevy S10 pickup truck.
Pickup trucks have always been man’s best vehicular companion. Everyone knows how useful and how enjoyable it can be to drive a pickup and customize it to suit particular needs. From lifted monster trucks to slammed-down mini-trucks, pickups have saved some of the automakers from going completely bankrupt. As the most accessorized vehicles out there today, they keep our performance aftermarket industry thriving.
A product of great parenting, Maxim’s parents took him to racing events such as drag racing, mud drags, stock car racing, Grand Prix Trois-Rivieres, and boat racing at Valleyfield Regatta. All of which had shaped the young man to become a tire-slayer at just 21 years old.
Although not a competitive extreme sportsman, Maxim is an avid skateboarder and BMX rider, all of which give him an adrenaline-fed natural instinct for winning. In 2012, he captured the DMCC Pro-Am Championship title, and at this time of writing, he is the current points

leader in the Pro DMCC Championship. Impressing peers and fans alike, he
cites Patrick Cyr as a great influence to his program, the two competitors are #teamfriendship, often seen hanging out and sharing laughs both in and outside the racetrack. The senior Pat Cyr found instant rapport and took well to the then-unknown Maxim Lemoine in 2011 when Max had cut his teeth in competition and took several podiums on his run to a Pro-Am championship.
Why would anyone ever decide to use a pickup truck as a competition vehicle? To Maxim, he didn’t really have a choice at the time, as this Chevy S10 was his only automobile. Early on, he worked in a
cramped garage with barely enough room to work on one side at a time. Through hard work and perseverance he earned enough money by working at a speed shop in Quebec City where he hashed out a plan to put in the best motor available – a LSX 454 from GM Performance. For those who don’t know, this is essentially a modern 21st century 454, utilizing a tall-deck LSX Bowtie Block and occupying the same space of a LS motor. With a forged rotating assembly and six bolt heads that hold down over 600 ponies, you cannot miss hearing this engine. The custom 5-inch exhaust terminates right behind the cab just below ear-level. To say this truck is loud is like saying all the heavy metal bands in the
world playing at the same time with like 600 amplifiers in the same venue would be loud. To those who are easily afraid, we like to say, – hide your kids and cover their ears.
What you don’t see is the development that Maxim and his best pal, JP have put into the fabrication of this seriously competitive S10 Pickup. From the custom fabricated dashboard with AutoMeter gauges, fuse panel and switches, to the roll cage and the custom-welded frame, this truck is a monster on its own. Putting the power to the pavement is achieved with QA1 Proma Star coilovers from strengthened and boxed suspension pickup points. When more traction is needed, Maxim uses weights to ballast the rear

suspension for more traction. Contrary to what most people think, drifting is as much traction as it is losing traction. You must go sideways, but you must also propel forward and leave your competitor in a huge plume of tire smoke to win. This humble truck subtly hides a few secrets up its sleeve and often leaves losing competitors in its wake, wondering where they can gain on Maxim and his trusty Chevy.
For every normal enthusiast, there’s always a rare outlier – someone who has to go completely against the grain. For Drift Mania Drifting Championship (DMCC) driver, Maxim Lemoine, he couldn’t have picked a better ride. In a sea of imports – some of which are running modern domestic V8 power, Maxim’s truck definitely sticks out and makes a bold statement, while obliterating rubber in a very dramatic way. Really, what’s not to like? •

_ONDR
If you have been around drag racing in Southern Ontario for a while, you
experienced it during what is now referred to as the golden years. Years when, if you went to the track, you never knew just what you might see. No matter if you were at Cayuga, St. Thomas, or Niagara, the numbers and types of cars were amazing.
Racers from that era built their cars to suit themselves, as well as the rule book. Those were the days before big
money sponsors and cloned cars. In those days, all cars did not look alike, with the only difference being the colour and the lettering. NHRA referred to that era as “Ingenuity in Action.”
If those days appeal to you, you can relive them right here at St. Thomas Raceway in Sparta, Ontario. St. Thomas was opened over 50 years ago by Bob and Helen Harvey and was for years run by the family. Unfortunately, the Harveys have passed
away, but the track is still operating. There have been a few name changes
originally St. Thomas Dragway then London Motorsports Park, and now St. Thomas Raceway, but the venue remains one of the nicest places to see races. The track features pits with grass, trees and a wonderful family attitude, plus good food at the concessions. Racing today closely matches those days in the 60s especially when the ONDR show is in town.
• Performance in Motion • 25
The ONDR (Ontario Nostalgia Drag Racers) was started in 2002 by Rick Proctor who, while sitting in the stands at St. Thomas, wondered why all the old style cars in the area were running against all the new cars. Rick felt there were enough cars from 1974 back that would make a fun oriented nostalgia drag club. Shortly after that, the ONDR was born. Rules were created and classes set.
However, the first and most important rule was to have fun. Eleven years later, there are 300+ members all having fun, while reliving the golden days of drag racing.
Look over Jim Madigan’s photos from their last event at St. Thomas and check the web site for their next outing. What a fun variety of cars, who says you can’t go back? •

For the last 33 years, the Antique and Classic Boat Society - Toronto has held
one of the largest boat shows in Canada. Each year, there is a feature boat builder with as many of that particular genre on display as possible. Over time famous builders such as Ditchburn, Greavette, Seabird, Chris Craft, and many others have all been recognized.
For the last 21 years, the show has been held at the Muskoka Wharf in scenic Gravenhurst, Ontario. This is home port for the Muskoka Steamship Fleet consisting of the RMS Segwun, the SS
Wenonah ll and the SS Wanda lll. This year’s event, held on July 6 took
a different turn, billed as “The Greatest Race Boat Show in Canadian History.” The 2013 event featured a wide variety of racing water craft. Everything from genuine antique wooden racers, to modern fibreglass versions with a nice mix of unlimited hydroplanes and sea fleas were all on display.
The docks were filled with all types of speed boats with a great turnout of “Gentlemans Racers.” Certainly one of the highlights was the freshly restored 64-year-
old Miss Canada lV, the varnish was barely dry when it hit the water. Miss Canada lV is powered by a 3,000 HP Rolls Royce Griffin engine. At 34-feett-long, we are talking impressive.
One of the other interesting parts of the day was to watch these great boats demonstrating their prowess on the water on a closed course set up in front of the boat docks, the sounds of power would make your heart pound.
All in all, it was a great day. Hats off to the ACBS for putting on an amazing show. I can’t wait till next year. •

The 42’ Team Apache, owned by Lorne Libel, was powered by not one, but two Entec 3151 blown big block engines.
One highlight of the show was the unveiling of Bob Genovese’s freshly restored 1948 Miss Canada IV Greavette, powered with a 12-cylinder Rolls Royce engine.

After so many journeys down the road, drivers and passengers alike develop a unique way of communicating. Some refer to it as The Code, which is only shared with those who know
the secret handshake, while others treat it like a trip to Vegas—what happens in the garage, stays in the garage.
Whether broadcast at full volume or as quietly as a group of angry mimes, a driver or passenger’s message won’t mean anything if you can’t crack the code. We’ve eliminated the need to call in MacGyver, interpretive dancers or the dudes from Counting Cars by creating this handy decoder.
“I’ll be done in ten minutes.”This is when many people discover that their loved one is a time lord. What the speaker thinks is only ten minutes can turn out to be hours or days. Unfortunately, those not inside the TARDIS (or the garage or the walk-in closet) know exactly how much time has passed and must use a bullhorn or cut the power supply to get said time lord’s attention.
“It was on sale.”If you have yet to understand the importance of reacting to this statement with praise and admiration instead of suspicion, you have a dark and lonely future ahead of you.
“It came that way.”This sentence—usually uttered at a cruise night or other vehicle-
gawking event by a chap who claims the Mustang engine in his Honda Civic is stock—should not be taken as an invitation to share your knowledge of how a particular make and model left the factory floor.
For some car nuts, all they have left is their belief. What you can do is point them in the right direction if they need parts or service for their unique-yet-stock automobile.
“It only needs a bit of work.”If this is said while a driver is acting like a young owner of an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle, you have a lost cause on your hands. If, by chance, you are able to inspect the vehicle before purchase, take a magnet with you to help determine how much of the ride’s body is still metal.
“Think of it as an investment.”And this last statement is the one that rings true for most of us. The time spent fixing up, souping up or simply driving around in the cars we love is an investment that pays off. Maybe it won’t be in copious amounts of cash, but it will be in overall enjoyment. There’s something magical that happens when the engine purrs, the road beckons and there’s still fuel in the tank.
Heck, if I had a nickel for every time I heard a driver proudly and excitedly explain how he or she fixed that faulty whatchamacallit or grinding doohickey, I’d have that beach house in Belize.
In the meantime, we can use our road-worthy common sense whenever those “code phrases” are uttered.
Enjoy the ride •
