MUSICAL MAPS OF MEANING I: THE “HERO’S JOURNEY”Sat., January 25, 2020 • 10 am • Jennifer N. Campbell The origins of musical sonata form are born of an innate sense of adventure within the genetics of human nature. From Mozart to Liszt and beyond, we will explore how Sonata form can and does often portray the archetypal shape of the “Hero’s Journey.”

EXPRESSIONS OF CULTURE IN CLASSICAL MUSIC Saturday, February 15, 2020 • 10 am • Holly Roadfeldt In this session, we will explore how traditional dances influenced the works of Brahms (Hungarian Dances) and Bartók (Romanian Folk Dances). Additionally, we will see how the vibrant characteristics of dances such as the tarantella, the mazurka, the polonaise, and the Ländler are preserved (or lost) in classical music from the 19th and 20th centuries.

AT LAST... SPRING!Saturday, March 21, 2020 • 10 am • Holly Roadfeldt If any season inspires dance, it is spring! On 2020’s second day of spring, we will celebrate with two inspirational works: Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Copland’s Appalachian Spring! We will discover how these tremendous ballets also succeed in the concert halls and make everyone’s outlook brighter!

MUSICAL MAPS OF MEANING II: MUSIC AS ILLUSTRATION Saturday, April 25, 2020 • 10 am • Jennifer N. Campbell Many works of music have their origins and inspirations from stories, poems, or visual artworks. Whether Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suites, Schubert’s Erlkönig, or Saint-Saëns’ Dance Macabre, we will explore how the composers create musical illustrations of these other art forms.

BIRDSONG IN MUSICSaturday, May 16, 2020 • 10 am • Tiffany Lu Birdsong is one of the earliest natural musical inspirations and has been imitated throughout Western musical history. We will explore works throughout the canon, including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Respighi’s The Birds, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques, and more.
