Physical Characteristics Some of the images are difficult to read due to the poor condition of the originals, some of which suffer from mould and insect damage, water damage, staining, creasing and tearing. In some images the original material has been obscured during the digitisation process.
Scope and Content This collection comprises digital images of original periodicals held by the al-Aqsa Mosque Library in East Jerusalem. The collection consists of 13 newspapers and 11 magazines published mainly in Palestine, but also in Syria and Turkey, between 1874 and 1955. The publications cover a range of historical and contemporary topics including politics, science, literature, cultural issues, Islam, education and economics.
The periodicals are predominantly written in Arabic although one publication, Tasvir-i efkar, is written in Turkish. French and English do appear occasionally as footnotes, annotations, or part of advertisements.
Due to the political and economic environment in which these periodicals were created, publications were often suspended for short and long periods of time, and in many cases the al-Aqsa Mosque Library does not hold every issue of a publication. This means that scope dates do not always give detailed enough information, and so are often elaborated on within the series description.

Physical Characteristics Some of the images are difficult to read due to the poor condition of the originals which suffer from tearing and possible water damage. These have been indicated at file level.
Scope and Content The series contains digital copies of 8 issues of the quarterly school journal of Kulliyat Rawat al-Ma'rif (The Garden of Knowledge College), named Rawat al-Ma'rif. The issues included here date from 1922-1923; 1932, and 1934.
It was published intermittently in Jerusalem from 1922 to 1924, briefly in 1929, and then resumed in 1932 through 1936. It covered not only school events and activities, but also published articles on Islam, historic figures, and contemporary issues. Occasionally it would reproduce articles from the local press, and Egyptian publications. Although most of the issues consist solely of text, a few later issues contain photographs.
The original periodicals were printed onto paper, and whilst all issues covered here possess a title page bearing an elaborate illustration of the title, only one issue appears to have retained a front cover. The originals measure 22 x 14.5 cm, and 27 x 20 cm.
Each file represents a published issue, and these have been arranged chronologically by date of publication.

Scope and Content The series contains 29 issues of al-Kullyah al'Arabyah, published between 1927 and 1938. An educational and cultural magazine, it was published quarterly by the Arab College of Jerusalem.
One of the first Arabic language magazines established in Palestine during the British Mandate Period, prior to 1927 the magazine was called Majallat Dar al-Mu'allamin, and was published ten times a year.
The original issues were published on paper at sizes of 22.5 x 15.5cm and 24x17cm.

Scope and Content The series contains 31 issues of the Arabic periodical al-uqq ('The Rights') published from 1923 - 1928. The publication focused on literary, legal and scientific issues, reflected in its subtitle 'a judicial, Islamic law, police, scientific and literary magazine'.
Occasionally two issues were published together in one physical copy: for this reason, the 31 issues here are represented by 22 electronic folders. The numbering of pages progressed continually throughout each issue, with the sequence ending on the last issue of the year.
al-Huquq was published in Jaffa by Fahmi al-Husseini, and printed by the Asriyah Press. The originals were printed on paper, and measured either 25 x 17 cm or 23 x 16 cm.

Scope and Content This series contains digital copies of 6 bound volumes of the monthly literary magazine al-Muqtabas, covering 71 issues from 1907-1913.
Prior to deposit with the al-Aqsa Mosque Library the issues were bound into volumes, each containing a years' publications starting with February; these volumes were donated to the Kulliyah al Salahiyah by Muhammad Kurd Ali, and the front page of each volume bears the annotation "Donation to the Kulliyah al-Salahiyah in Jerusalem from the founder of al-Muqtabas", with a date and a signature. The al-Aqsa mosque library holds volumes two to seven, but does not hold any issues for the year 1906.
al-Muqtabas ('Acquired Learning') was established by Muhammad Kurd Ali in 1906, and originally published in Cairo. In 1908 the magazine transferred to Damascus, where publication continued until 1917. The magazine subtitle reflects these changes in location: its subtitle up to 1909 was "A literary, scientific and social magazine published every Arab month in Cairo"; following the move this changed to "It investigates teaching and education, society, economics, literature, history, antiquities, language, home arrangements, books, Arab civilisation and Western civilisation."
The original issues were published individually on paper, measuring 24 x 15 cm
Prior to deposit with the Al-Asqa Mosque Library the monthly issues were bound into volumes, starting with February and covering the period of a year. Each volume contains a table of contents. The page numbers run consecutively through each volume.

Custodial History The originals are held by the al-Aqsa Mosque Library. Prior to this they had been held by the Kulliyah al-Salahiyah (al-Salahiyah College), having been donated by Muhammad Kurd Ali.

Scope and Content This series contains digital images of 23 issues of al-'Arab, a weekly news magazine. The magazine was published between 1932 and 1934. The al-Aqsa Mosque Library holdings start in June 1933, and do not provide total coverage.
The publications for 15 July 1933 and 25 November 1933 actually consist of two issues published as one edition; this is why 23 issues have been represented in 21 electronic folders.
The magazine was considered to be a supporter of the Supreme Islamic Council in Palestine, and served as the periodical of the Arab al-Istiqlal ('Independence') party. Its subtitle was "An illustrated weekly investigating the affairs of the Arab and Islamic worlds", reflecting the fact that the magazine had reporters in several major Arab cities, including Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad.
The originals were printed on paper, measuring 30 x 50cm, and 23 x 50 cm.
Each file represents a published issue, arranged chronologically by date of publication.

Scope and Content The series contains digital images of one bound volume of al-Jinn for the year 1874, containing 24 issues. al-Jinn was an educational, historical and literary magazine, published twice a month in Beirut by Butrus al-Bustani.
Alongside articles concerning Arabic history and literature, the magazine presents summaries of current and historical events in Europe, and sometimes features translations from European press and literature.
Originally published individually, the issues for 1874 have been bound into one volume, and are kept like this at the al-Aqsa Mosque Library. Page numbers run consecutively throughout the volume.

Volume 1 covers the period 20 June 1909 - 20 May 1910

Volume 3 covers the period 20 October 1911 - 20 June 1912
Each volume begins with a table of contents.
al-asn' was established in 1909 by Georges Nicolas Baz, and published in Beirut by Hadiqat al-Akhbar press until 1912. Its French subtitle '(La Belle) Revue Feminine Morale Sociale' translates as 'a women's ethical and social magazine'. Each volume has been signed by Georges Nicolas Baz, and bears a dedication to the al-Aqsa Mosque Library. The magazine was noted for often containing photographs of famous European women.
The original publications were printed on paper, measuring 22 x 15 cm.
Originally published individually, prior to deposit with the al-Aqsa Mosque Library the individual issues were bound into volumes. This catalogue reflects this arrangement, with each volume represented by a file.

Physical Characteristics Some of the images in this series are difficult to read, due to the poor condition of the originals. Problems include faint or faded text, apparent mould and water damage, and staining.
Scope and Content The series contains digital images of 51 issues of the magazine al-Zahrah, covering 1922-1926. al-Zahrah was published twice a month, but due to political and economic contingencies two issues were often published as one; for this reason, the 51 issues are spread across 38 physical publications, and are represented here in 38 electronic folders.
al-Zahrah ('Flower' or 'Venus') was published in Haifa by Jamil al-Bahri, as a "literary, novelistic, ethical, historical and humour magazine." Each issue contains a literary section with stories published in installments. Page numbers for these sections differ from the numbering for the rest of the magazine, allowing readers to easily follow stories as they continued through different issues. Issue numbers are given on the cover of each issue, however there is no discernable pattern to the issue number sequences, and they can return to issue one at seemingly random intervals.
al-Zahrah was published from 1921-1927. The al-Aqsa Mosque library holdings only cover the period May 1922 - March 1926. al-Zahrah developed from Zahrat al-Jamil ('the Flower of the Beautiful') magazine, and in 1927 changed title, to become al-Zuhour ('Flowers').
Issues were originally published on paper, measuring 23 x 15 cm
Although intended to be published twice a month, economic and political circumstances meant that two issues were occasionally published in the same physical edition. This means that 51 issues were published as 35 publications, and this arrangement is reflected in the catalogue.

al-Fajr was 'a weekly magazine for culture and art', published in Jaffa by Iskander Halabi. Arif al'Azuni was the director, and Muhammad Sayf al-Din al-Irani was its chief editor.
The publication often included photographs of famous western actresses, and would put these photographs on the front cover, which was unusual for the Arabic press at the time.
