• The idea of Permaculture, perceivedby Bill Mollison and David Holmgren startedin the 70s. For his concept of ´permanent agriculture´ Bill was awarded with theAlternative Nobelprice.

• ´The legendaryJapanese farmer and philosopher, MasanobuFukuoka inspiredpermaculture gardening.

•Cultural landscapes - Most of the landscapes with high biodiversity are „rurallandscapes“• Nature conservation becomesmore and more an importantform of land-utilization• On the other hand agricultureis retreating – and in simeregions Nature Conservationreplaces agriculture• Therefore our main objective isto present projects of integratedland utilization and models of a ´learning region´. •http://www.iale.sk/download/kvarda/2008.pdf

The city of Vienna has presently a big chance for creating the city of the future in a partici-patory process. The Institute of Soil Science will start a Permaculture Design Project.

TARGET GROUPS• First cycle: community gardens,

permaculture patterns, creatingedible landscape, aquaculture, roof gardens, etc.

• Second cycle: Ellaborate concepts for a network of openspaces, related to themasterplan (see page 7)

• Third cycle: Establishingconcepts for solidarity economyon regenerative systems in thesocial fabric

Permaculture is a way of life. It shows howto make the most of our resources bymini-mising waste and maximisingpotential.

Permaculture is possible under any

culture, any climate, by people with any

skills.

Ecological waste water treatmentin Berlin www.atelier-loidl.de/

Within an ecological design

process a wide range of sciences

are integrated, but in a compre-

hensive way, where every partici-

pant is empowered to join the

project about a particular problem.

The ideal urban form for particular

locale will depend to some extend

on the nature of the energy-supply

options: Higher densities make

most efficient use of district heating

PATTERNS

• A pattern language is a system which

allows its users to create an infinite

variety of those three dimensional

combinations of patterns, which we call

open spaces (roof gardens), buildings

(architecture) and cultural landscapes

• Ecological Design respects and nurturestraditional knowledge of place and localmaterials and technologies

4. PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSEPermaculture Principle – solutions grow from place & organic order

4. PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSEPermaculture principle – solutions grow from space

A pattern is a general planning

principle, which states a clear

problem that may occur

repeatedly in the environment,

and gives the general features

required by all buildings or plans

which solve this problem.

building in the 7th district in

Three principles of knowledge integration

• verstehen (understanding), knowing the

problems and perceiving the details and

patterns of a place helps for the design

process

• begreifen (conceptualizing) at the second

level is the conceptual model of the real world

• erklären (explaining), the third level is the

causal explanation based on arguments

arranged according to propositional logic.
