Parks and Trails will be on the ballot this November 5......and so is green space maintenance, water quality management, nature-based education programming, and memorable experiences for you, friends, and family. In the 2019 election, Stark Parks will appear on the ballot seeking a 1.2 mill, 8 year property tax. With this funding, Stark Parks will continue to make connections that will create destination experiences for users, add more programs for health and wellness, improve accessibility within and between parks, and continue the buildout of the Stark County Trail and Greenway Master Plan. The proposal for the replacement and addition will be listed on the ballot as one item.
Who we are + our missionStark Parks manages 15 parks, 4 lakes, and 120+ miles of hiking, biking, and horsebacking trails for Stark County to enjoy. Our mission is to preserve, manage, and connect natural areas to serve the community through recreation, conservation and education.
The Past 5 Years In the previous 5 years, Stark Parks has added 40 miles of trails and opened 3 new parks, including the Pioneer Trail in Canton, the Iron Horse Trail expansion in Alliance, the Nickel Plate Trail in Minerva, the Sandy Valley Trail in Waynesburg, the Sippo Valley Trail in Massillon, Quail Hollow Park in Lake Township, Fry Family Park in Pike Township, and Tam O’Shanter Park in Jackson Township.
The Future of ParksThe new Five Year Plan emphasizes increased connectivity, as well as supports upgrades to shelters and trailheads that include full restroom facilities. Individual park master plans for larger parks call for the creation of visitor centers and nature play spaces, upgraded park and trail signage, habitat restoration, providing more education programs and information, and increased security.

Fry Family Park (Magnolia)Indoor renovation work at the Fry Family Park Visitor Center has been completed. Site work will now begin on the parking
lot to provide access for visitors. Work is anticipated to run through the winter of 2019. The water line connection currently underway will allow for water service at the shelter.
Tam O’Shanter Park (Jackson Township)The Master Plan for the park is complete and available at StarkParks.com. As the developers begin working at the site later this summer, grading work will be done to create the wetland on the Stark Parks portion of the property. Visitors will begin to see earth work being done, and once water levels have
stabilized, park staff will plant appropriate wetland plants in the area. The great lawn area will continue to be mowed as called for in the plan to provide space for playing frisbee or picnicking, and the 3 trail loops will continue to be mowed-in as long as the habitat restoration process allows. Signage will be installed along these 3 trail areas to describe what the future plans in those areas are and what they will look like. The shelter has been cleaned and is now available to rent at StarkParks.com. Portable toilet facilities are available at the site as well as electricity. We continue to appreciate your patience as the park is developed and hope you enjoy seeing the transformation first-hand.
Iron Horse Trail (Alliance)Work continues on the Iron Horse Trail and is expected to be complete in late fall. A community clean-up will be held on Sept. 28. Stay tuned for grand opening details!
Market Avenue Tunnel (North Canton) ODOT has turned the Market Tunnel management over to Stark Parks, and residential development continues on the east side of the tunnel toward the Middle Branch Trail. We are working closely with the developers on a plan to continue the trail when the area is safe for public access. Until that portion of the trail is ready, this section of the trail will be closed due to the construction.

Meet Jasper! Introducing Jasper, our new red fox wildlife ambassador! Jasper came to us after he was found starving and barely alive in a ditch. It was obvious he had been raised around people based on his demeanor and was unable to survive in the wild. You’re probably thinking - if he is a red fox, why is he white?! Sometimes, animals are born with slightly different pigment patterns, such as albinism (no pigment),
melanism (extra dark pigment), or leucism (a loss of one or more pigments). Jasper’s type of
coloration is selected for and commonly bred in fur farms and the exotic pet trade. Foxes do not make good pets due to their skunk-like smell, and wild, destructive habits. You can visit Jasper at the Wildlife Conservation Center at the
west entrance of Sippo Lake Park!
Friends of Stark Parks invites you to celebrate the accomplishments of the Joseph J. & Helen M. Sommer
Wildlife Conservation Center with the changing season. Enjoy dinner, drinks, music, and stunning
views of Sippo Lake Park as the colors turn.
