TASK 2: Describe what each methods involves and how the results may be used.

Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire (Trait theorist!!)Questions allow ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer only.Used factor analysis to identify trends; came up with

the two dimensions of personality (introvert/extrovert stable/neurotic)

Results used to place subjects along these continuums to assess personality traits.

Extroverts = need higher stimulation and arousal so are more suited to team orientated activities with gross motor skills.

Introverts = sensitive RAS therefore optimum performance at lower arousal more suited to sport with continuous or precise nature e.g. Running, shooting.

More likely to produce elite performer who has stable characteristics rather than neurotic.

TASK 2: Describe what each methods involves and how the results may be used.

Cattell’s 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (Trait theorist!!)

Argued that personality was more complicated the two or three dimensions.

Measured personality using 16 factors. (see questionnaire).

Believed personality is made up of some common traits (everyone) and some unique (only some people).

Scores used to profile personality but Cattell did accept that a person score may differ each time they did the test depending on situation UNLIKE Eysenck.

Can mood affect performance?

If so, what does this mean for the impact that personality profiling can have on the adoption of HAL and performance?

Lets say the personality traits are enduring and stable and can be measured accurately. These results are used to determine whether performers are suited to certain sports or how they will behave.

WHAT HAPPENS TO PERFORMANCE IF YOU ARRIVE TO TRIANING IN A BAD MOOD OR

HAVE NEGATIVE MOOD PROFILE?

Morgan (1975)Carried out research that compared successful

and unsuccessful athletes. Mood states are temporary opposed to

personality traits which are seen as relatively stable.

Successful athletes displaying a generally more positive mood profile than unsuccessful athletes.

It is inconclusive whether a positive mood state is a result of success or helps to create the success.
