Microbioloympiad Microbiolympiad is the state level unique educational innovation started by the Department of

Microbiology and Biotechnology of R. C. Patel Arts, Commerce and Science College, Shirpur in

2001-02. The department and the college has been able to sustain and popularize this activity

among the students of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Life Sciences in all corners of

Maharashtra. In fact the college is known in the name of the microbiolympiad. More than

20,000 undergraduate students have participated in this activity.

The context

The majority of the students admitted in this College come from the rural, economically

backward background for whom quality education in the highly applied subject like

Microbiology and Biotechnology is still out of reach. On the other hand, there is continuous

demand for the skilled professionals in the subjects of Microbiology and Biotechnology. The

Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology started this activity to impart in-depth subject

knowledge, practical and research, critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills among

the students of this region. Moreover, the success rate of our students in national competitive

examinations such as NET, SET and GATE is not appreciable. It was also our one of the goal to

make our students competent enough to prepare and appear for these examinations. The pattern

of questions, reasoning and logical problems, observation based problems are framed in way like

that of the national competitive examinations in the subject of Life Science.

The objectives of Microbiolympiad:

Enhance competitive alertness among the life science students

Involve budding microbiologists and biotechnologists in relevance and excitement of

Microbiology and Life Sciences

Facilitating students' ability to apply the biological principles to solve the emerging

problems of mankind.

Help to understand and appreciate the nature and function of microbes

Page 13: Perspective/Strategic Plan and Deployment Documents

The Practice

The state level microbiolympiad is conducted in two phases. The first phase consist of a

screening test that consist of 50 multiple choice questions. The test is conducted on 9th January

of every year on the occasion of birth anniversary of great microbiologist-Robert Koch who

formulated Koch‟s postulates. Every year more than 3000 students from around one hundred

different colleges across the Maharashtra participate in this phase. The organizers display the

syllabus, pattern, marking scheme, result etc. to the participating college and the students

through the dedicated website (www.microbiolympiad.com). After completion of the screening

test, the result is displayed on the website. Top ten centres among all the participating colleges

are screened out on the basis of average of marks of the top three students of the centre. Top

three rankers of the selected centres are called for the second phase i.e. Microbioloympiad which

is hosted by our college on 27th Jan. on the occasion of birth anniversary of the most influential

microbiologist of the all times- Louis Pasteur. This event consist of audio-visual quiz that

consist of questions based on logic, reasoning, quantitative aptitude, problem solving ability of

the student. The quiz is conducted in separate sessions for the students of first year, second year

and third year. Expert judges are invited for the evaluation and computing the results. Top three

teams from each classe (FYBSc, SYBSc and TYBSc) are selected and awarded with the cash

prizes, certificate of merit and trophy. The college spends around Rs. One lakh on this activity

every year. This activity is highly appreciated by students, teachers, academicians and scientists.

Student feedback is available on the website (http://www.microbiolympiad.com/event.php).

Evidence of Success: The most convincing proof of success of Microbioloympiad is the

continuous increase in the number of students as well as the centres participating in this event.

The chronological increase in number of participants in Microbioloympiad is available on our

website (http://www.microbiolympiad.com/result.php). Moreover, the national association of

the subject Microbiology-Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI) has also shown a keen

interest to take this activity at the national level. The organizers of Microbioloympiad are

looking forward to take this challenge.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required: Lack of funds is the major constrain to

organize the event like Microbiolympiad. No government support is available to run the

educational innovations like Microbioloympiad. The organizers charge a nominal registration

fees (50 Rs. Per student) to cover the printing, communication, travel expenses. The organizers

also envisage to conduct the first phase (the screening test) in an online mode. However, lack of

Page 14: Perspective/Strategic Plan and Deployment Documents

technical support staff, lack of ICT resources and finance are constrains.

Notes: The similar type of subject related innovations can also be conducted in other colleges in

other subject where the expertise is available.

Blood group detection and hygiene awareness camps

The department of Microbiology and Biotechnology of the college has an active student club-

„Plasmid Club‟. In biological world, plasmid means - a genome coding extra characters to the

organism. Similarly the main objective of this club is also performing various extracurricular

activities. The objectives of this student club are: To get acquaint with good study techniques

and to make available the study resources for preparation of competitive examination. Creating

cooperative environment within students and helping in expression of Students ideas, views,

thoughts & enhance the interaction within students, Students-Teachers and by making

available a Wall magazine - "BIOVISION" and making students aware of Social issues such as

pollution, disease awareness and importance of personal in daily life. Details of the activities of

this club are available at department website: http://www.mbbtshirpur.info/plasmid_club.php

Objectives of the Practice Since the college is working n rural and tribal area of Maharashtra, social and public health

related issues are major problems of the region. Due to lesser literacy rate, the villages in the

interior of Shirpur Taluka do to have access to preliminary health facilities. Several government

residential schools are established in these area offering the primary and secondary education to

tribal students. However, the students from these schools as well as the tribal people of the

villages have no basic understanding of personal hygiene, cleanliness, spreading of diseases and

other sanitary practices.

The context: Microbiology students have basic knowledge of personal and public health

importance, role of microorganisms in diseases and preventive measures to control the diseases.

Moreover, the student have also primary knowledge of human blood groups, detection of blood

groups and Haemoglobin content in the blood.

Page 15: Perspective/Strategic Plan and Deployment Documents

The practice: Taking the advantage of their knowledge and to inculcate social zeal among the

students, the department of microbiology and Biotechnology of the college is undertaking the

blood group detection and hygiene awareness camps in the Ashram Schools of nearby villages

from last fifteen years on 8th August. Blood group of several thousand students and tribals was

checked in this exercise. So far, the camp has been organized at 16 villages. In this activity,

students of the department the blood group of the young children. They also demonstrate

importance of hand washing, bathing, nail clipping etc. Students also prepare the posters

highlighting important communicable diseases, their control and treatment. During the camp,

students present street plays, door to door visit and aware the tribal people regarding various

health issues. This activity has been appreciated media as well as by the management of the

college (http://www.mbbtshirpur.info/plasmid_club.php)

Evidence of success:

The blood group detection and disease awareness camp run by the college has received attention

of various government bodies and media. Government hospital also involves in this drive for

screening of sickle ce ll anaemia and other diseases. Private dentist of the Shirpur city also

voluntarily join this camp and provide important information to tribals and school children

regarding dental and oral hygiene. The details of number of camps, location, total number of

individuals involved in the camp etc. is available at departmental website:

http://www.mbbtshirpur.info/blood_group_camp.php.

Moreover, the faculty and the student proactively worked in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Students organized several rallies, media campaigning, clean campus drive etc. The Department

of Microbiology coordinated the vermicomposting of solid waste in several housing societies

during the Swachat Drive of Shirpur Warwade Municipal Council. The efforts of our students

and faculty are appreciated by media as well as by government bodies.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

This activity is fully run by a student club. It requires little financial support which is provided

by the department from the student registration fees. However, there is tremendous scope to

work on these issues especially in rural and tribal set up. More involvement of government

organization and NGOs is anticipated to reach to wider group of people in remote areas.
