Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

On a recent beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon I, Paul, and our hounds, gathered with others from the village - and their hounds! - to scatter poppy seeds.

100 years since the beginning of the first World War, we sowed these seeds, hoping that in due course they will become Perton’s Living Memorial - a field of these distinctive, poignant, beautiful flowers, by the small lake, greeting those who pass it as they come onto Perton. A Living Memorial is such a profound and yet simple idea. As we know, poppies were the only sign of life amongst the horrors of first world war battlefields. A delicate, yet incredibly strong flower, the poppy offered a glimmer of life amongst so much death.100 years’ later, a field of poppies… lest we forget, and giving thanks for the life we enjoy. A Living Memorial is at the same time both a memorial, and also a symbol of hope, of life. It reminds me of the Living Memorial enacted in churches across the world. It has many names, but essentially involves sharing bread and wine as a Living Memorial of Jesus. A Living Memorial of bread and wine - lest we forget the incredible sacrifice Jesus made, giving his life; and a symbol of hope and life, as in this place of death, new life emerged, Jesus’ resurrected life, proving his message of God’s love for all - love stronger even than death - and offering hope, even in death.

Perton is Important to Festival Success!March was an exciting month in and around local villages as yet another successful Codsall Community Arts Festival took place. A new initiative was the introduction of Community Day. The centre of Codsall buzzed as people of all ages dashed between activities which included African drumming, poetry and craft stalls. The

main Festival began a few days later. Such was the appeal of the programme that no fewer than six events were complete sell-outs. Emails from several of the artistes state that Codsall was an extremely welcoming place to perform. ‘The Reel Note Band’ wrote that Codsall was ‘one of our best gigs in our 13 year history’ and Colin Wright, whose amazing mathematical juggling stunned the audience, said that he would love to return. And who could have failed to have been won over by the charismatic charm of both Ken Livingston and the renowned international pianist, Cyprien Katsaris?Perton proved to be a popular venue. The children’s author, Jeremy Strong, delighted his young audience while the quality of Mike Lovell’s Six-in-a-Bar classic jazz band could not have failed to please the even most informed of jazz enthusiasts. Currently the committee is busy analysing and evaluating but soon the enormous task of planning the 2016 festival will begin. Ideas from anybody who has thoughts on either of these issues are most welcome, via the website. Members of the committee for the Codsall Community Arts Festival would like to express their thanks for the outstanding support which was given, not only by Codsall residents and businesses but also by the communities of surrounding towns and villages. Without the help of individuals and groups, in a whole host of ways, the festival would not continue to thrive and develop in such a strong and positive way. Committee members are local volunteers and are always on the look out for more help. Some members have good computer skills, others prefer to work with data, finance, writing or organising but there are a whole load of other tasks - and those people with new ideas are always vital. The hard work is fulfilling and worthwhile, especially when yet another festival begins. So if you think you might like to find out more, without any obligation, please contact us via the website. www.codsallartsfestival.org.uk

Wild About Perton in MaySeeing a squashed hedgehog in the road used to be a frequent sight but now rarely seen because of the hedgehogs’ dramatic decline. So the presence of Cellie at Wild About Perton’s Spring Festival gave an all too rare opportunity for people to get up close to a live hedgehog. Wild hedgehogs roll into a prickly ball of spines when threatened, but not Cellie, who is relaxed in human company, with his 6,000 spines soft to the touch. Cellie was found starving and brought back to life by West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue. He now represents his species at public events and hopefully encourages us to make our gardens more wildlife friendly, avoiding the use of dangerous chemicals which are such a threat to hedgehogs. Badgers were represented at the Festival by the Staffordshire Badger Conservation Group and there was a lively debate around the Groups’ display about the recent badger cull. Our M.P. supported the cull, believing that cattle should be protected against the spread of TB, whereas the Badger Group was against believing that badgers should be inoculated against this debilitating disease which hits cattle and badgers alike. Not much agreement but an indication that Government had learnt that culls were not the complete answer to the problem. Over the past two years Wild About Perton has been keeping an eye on a rare native orchid, the broad leafed helleborine, in Perton. We have been looking out for the plant because like the hedgehog it’s fast disappearing but not as a result of dangerous chemicals but by a human hand. All the helleborine we found two years ago has been dug up and taken away. Digging up wild plants is a crime and this offence has been reported and recorded by the Police. With wildlife and the environment facing enormous pressures, the last thing it needs are such selfish acts of vandalism which not only destroy our environment, but steals the chance for others to see these beautiful plants. Why not join us for one of our monthly wildlife walk which leaves Perton Library at 2PM on the first Saturday of every month. A Word From Your MPAs an MP, you rarely have time to indulge your hobbies. This certainly holds true in the case of my ongoing passion for vintage cars. I have long had the dream of buying a classic car and fixing it up over a period of several years. I may lack the time, the money and, let’s be honest, the skill, but still the dream lives on.It is partly this love of cars that makes me so proud to live in South Staffordshire, home of the new Jaguar Land Rover engine plant. And, it was this love of cars that recently heightened my joy at discovering I had secured a Westminster Hall debate on the UK’s automotive sector. It also helped that the subject covered one of my other core interests: British manufacturing.British manufacturing was consistently underfunded during the past Government and when we took over, in 2010, many British people feared that the proud age of British production had undergone a tragic, long foreseen and irreversible demise. Over the past few years, I think we have successfully proven this is very much not the case and nowhere is this truer than in the automotive sector. Over 1.5 million cars were built in the UK in 2013, the highest level since 2007. Forecasts suggest that two million cars could be built in the UK by 2017, the highest number ever. This would not have happened without the £7 billion of investment has been committed to the UK automotive industry since 2010. However, we cannot afford to be complacent. Indeed, in my debate, I spoke about the need to focus on areas such as research and development, the supply chain and essential skills, as Britain’s auto industry continues its exponential growth. Jaguar Land Rover is one example of a change that is happening throughout the country and we need to support this evolution. In South Staffordshire, we have much to be proud of. Opportunities for employment are on the up, crime is down and business is booming. However, as much as Government support may help contribute towards these developments, the true recognition needs to go to the people of South Staffordshire themselves. We are living in an incredible part of the country, in an area where I can honestly say a community spirit continues to thrive. Only last month, I was visiting the Perton Springwatch Festival. The free annual event was the eighth edition of the Festival, which is hosted each year by Wild About Perton and the Perton Library, and supported by various wildlife and environmental organisations. The event was extremely popular and attracted around 2,000 visitors, which I am reliably informed is a new record. I, myself, had a wonderful time and greatly enjoyed meeting Celly the hedgehog and my new greyhound friend. It is events such as this which make all the difference to local communities, providing a venue and opportunity for people to meet and socialise with their neighbours. It is only by keeping these community bonds strong that South Staffordshire will continue to prosper in the years ahead. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

There is never a bad time to work on your short game. One of the best practice sessions you may ever have with wedges is

to use hula hoops.Sounds like a good time right? Well, after practicing with these you will really get a sense of your distance control and how you can drastically begin to make more birdies and save more pars. It’s really quite easy – bring 3 hula hoops to the practice area and lay them out at 20, 30 & 40 yards. Now hit 10 balls into each. You’ll quickly notice what adjustments you needed to make to get the ball into each hoop. You can start moving the hoops as far back as you would like, but after just a few short sessions with these practice aids you’ll see huge improvements. Now when you need to hit a wedge shot that lands 30 yards you can just visualize the hula hoops and remember how it felt to fly the ball 30 yards. If you’re having trouble controlling your distances give me a call, I’d be happy to come out and see what technical adjustments may need to be made to better improve the control.

Good Luck and get practicing. For Lessons call 07976 894363.
