CUSCOAREA MACHU PICCHU (1 DAY) A bus transfer takes you to the train station where you take the early morning train to Machu Picchu. The journey follows the impressive Urubamba River to the base of Machu Picchu itself. Your English-speaking guide escorts you for the short bus ride direct to the ruins. Once there, you can enjoy an extensive walking tour of the ruins and full explanation of this fascinating site. If time permits you can explore further to the Inca bridge, Watchman’s hut or try the strenuous climb to the sun gate – Inti Punku. Alternatively you may prefer to just relax and take it all in. After a full day to explore the site, you descend to the waiting train to enjoy one of the great train journeys of the world back along the Sacred Valley. Included: English-speaking guide, transport, train ticket, entrance fees, bus ticket, Machu Picchu entrance Guide price: £360 WHITE WATER RAFTING (1 DAY) Anyone looking for a fun day of alternative adventure should try this rafting trip, which takes you down a beautiful section of the Urubamba river.

The section we run is usually the class III-IV Chuquicahuana section located above Cusco, where the river is cleaner and more fun. It takes one and a half hours to drive to the river and on arrival we inflate the rafts and provide a full safety briefing and instruction in the art of white-water rafting. We then set off for approximately two hours of fun rafting, making the most of the gentle start to practice our technique. The river then flows through a beautiful canyon, filled with fun rapids, torrent ducks and views of the surrounding peaks. Finally we reach our take out point and enjoy a full picnic lunch before returning to your hotel mid to late afternoon. Included: transport, lunch, all white-water & safety equipment Guide price: £440 (2 people). Price will be less if more people take part. MOUNTAIN BIKING (1 DAY) Fantastic views, fast descents and fascinating insights into local culture make this a day you will remember. Do not worry; you do not have to be an ace racer to enjoy it. Your expert guide will show you all you need to know and with the help of the latest full suspension bikes you will be cruising the trails in no time.

A short drive takes you to the start point amongst the fields of the Chinchero plateau. Potatoes, beans, corn, kiwicha and quinoa combine their colours to lend a patchwork effect to this very traditional agricultural area. With a constant backdrop of the snow capped Urubamba range this is a photographer’s dream. The riding starts gently on mainly flat trails. Soon a few small uphills punctuate the route to Moray where you jump off the bikes and visit these unique Inca ruins. Very different to anything else you will see, the concentric circle terracing is thought to have been used as an early agricultural laboratory. The different depths and aspects allowed by the circular terracing helped the Incas predict what crops might grow where. When you finish your tour of the site lunch will be set up and waiting for you. After lunch it is all downhill. 750 metres or 2500 feet of

fantastic single track. While some parts are a bit tricky for beginners, with the help and encouragement of your guides you will arrive at the salt pans of Maras. Still mined by hand you could even buy some to take home as a great souvenir. Included: English-speaking guide, transport, equipment, bike, helmet, gloves, lunch, entrance fees Guide price: £140 (2 people). Price will be less if more people take part. HORSE RIDING (½ DAY) This lovely half day of gentle horse riding is a superb introduction to the Inca heritage of Peru. At 3650 - 3900m, this is also a perfect acclimatisation ride to prepare you for your onward travels at altitude. No experience is required. Leaving Cusco either in the morning or the afternoon, we transfer by car to the outskirts of Cusco. Here we meet our local mountain horses and after an instruction in the art of riding, we start gently on a mix of dirt roads and horse trails. We then head far from the standard tourist route, up in the hills where we can enjoy beautiful scenery and great views down the Cusco valley. The traditional farming methods and highly adapted Andean crops are a treat to see still functioning. There is also an opportunity to visit some rarely visited Inca sites along the way, if you so desire. This ride is highly flexible and we will tailor make it to the abilities and desires of each individual group. A support vehicle is on hand at times to take any non-riders, weary riders or spare kit. After a couple of hours of fun surrounded by beautiful scenery, we return you to your hotel for your ongoing travels. Included: horses, helmet & gloves, English-speaking guide, transport, snacks & water Guide price: £75 (2 people). Price will be less if more people take part.

FURTHERAFIELD RAINFOREST EXTENSION These vast tracks of virgin rainforest virtually surround the Puerto Maldonado area make it probably the best place in the world for anybody who wishes to experience the Amazon Jungle at its best. Puerto Maldonado is at the confluence of two of the major tributaries of the Amazon River itself. The River Tambopata flows down from the National Reserve and the Bahuaja National park, with the Madre de Dios flowing down from the Manu National Park. Along the banks of these rivers are many different lodges with different attributes, styles and qualities. After working with various lodges from our experience we have picked the following as they fit into our philosophy and provide a great quality of service. Guide Itinerary Day 1 A short flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado deep in the Amazon rainforest where you will be met by your expert resident guide and taken to the docks to board a motorized dugout canoe for the trip to your jungle lodge. You will be able to leave any excess luggage at their offices in Puerto Maldonado. On arrival at the lodge you can choose from a number of activities, from jungle hikes to canoe trips or simply take a siesta and enjoy the sounds of the jungle from your hammock. (BLD) Days 2 & 3 A variety of options to choose from, the jungle is usually alive very early in the morning so if you can get out pre-dawn and explore it is your best chance to see wildlife. Monkeys, birds, giant otters, ants galore and a chance to learn about the rainforest from your expert resident guides either on foot or by dugout canoe. There is plenty of time to have a siesta to avoid the hottest part of the day then take a canoe trip on a lake or explore more trails and catch a beautiful sunset over the Amazon basin. The evening can be free to relax or head out on foot in search of nocturnal mammals or by canoe in the hope of glimpsing the rare Black caimans that inhabit the lake. (BLD) Day 4 After a dawn breakfast we return to Puerto Maldonado to catch the flight to Cusco or Lima and onto to your international connection. (B) LAKE TITICACA EXTENSION Lake Titicaca is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world sitting at 3810m above sea level. It is famous for the various different communities that live on different islands from Taquile and Amantani islands to the famous floating islands of Uros. The city of Puno sits on Lake Titicaca shores and the hub for most of the tourist activities that occur in this area. Guide Itinerary Day 1 An early morning transfer from your hotel to the nearby train station where we board the luxury all-day train from Cusco across the high plains to Puno. This is one of the “Great Train journeys of the World”. The waiter

service and entertainment is everything you expect of the ‘Orient Express’ service. On arrival in Puno, you are met at the train station and transferred to a modern, well-equipped 3* Hotel conveniently located in the centre of Puno. This evening you are free to explore Puno (L) Day 2 We board a shared fast boat for a cruise on Lake Titicaca. Our own private guide fully explains the local history, traditions and agricultural methods as we visit the amazing floating reed islands of Uros and onto Amantani Island for lunch. Here we are allocated our family home-shares and once settled in, if you wish, we can attempt a tough climb to the top of the Island to be rewarded by spectacular views of Lake Titicaca and an amazing sunset, before returning to our families for dinner. Whilst the accommodation is fairly basic the experience of staying with a family is truly amazing and a great chance for a unique cultural exchange. (B LD)

Day 3 From Amantani we take our boat across to Taquile Island, famous for its beautiful weavings and friendly people and a chance for a hike to explore this beautiful island. We have lunch in a typical restaurant before returning to Puno and transferring back to your hotel (BL) Day 4 Flight time dependant, we can visit the circular Pre-Inca burial towers of Silustani, before travelling onto Juliaca airport for your ongoing travel.(B) COLCA CANYON EXTENSION The beautiful “White City” of Arequipa and the nearby Colca Canyon is the perfect place to start or finish a trip to Peru and is ideal for acclimatising oneself to the rarefied air of the Andes or for relaxing in Hot-springs following your Amazonas Explorer adventure. The road from Puno to the Colca canyon has now improved sufficiently to make the overland journey from Puno and Lake Titicaca a viable alternative to going via Arequipa, thus saving hours of travel. Guide Itinerary Day 1 Arriving in Arequipa, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your centrally located hotel. Arequipa is known locally as “The White City" and is a beautiful city to explore. It boasts a magnificent marble Plaza de Armas with a stunning view of El Misti mountain in the background. Your guide will take you on an afternoon orientation walk and to the picturesque Santa

Catalina Monastery. First opened to the public in 1970, the convent is a maze of intricate architecture and a photographer's paradise. You may also consider visiting the Andean Sanctuary Museum, whose collection of frozen mummies sacrificed on the nearby mountain tops includes the famous ice maiden ‘Juanita’. The evening is free for some sightseeing and shopping. Alpaca and Vicuña wool are Arequipa’s finest export and there are plenty of opportunities for treating yourself to some stunning textiles here. You can also enjoy Arequipa’s nightlife and fine dining. (B)

Day 2 Driving out of Arequipa we enjoy spectacular views of the mountains surrounding the city before climbing high into the Andes and descending into the amazing Colca canyon. The Colca canyon is one of the world’s deepest canyons and is home to condors and a fascinating local culture, completely different from any other place you will visit on this trip. We stay overnight in the charming Colca lodge. Soaking in the world class hot springs is the prime activity here, closely followed by exploring the lodge’s restaurant, bar or games room. Horse riding, hiking to local ruins, mountain biking and fishing can all be arranged locally through the in-house adventure company. (BLD)

Day 3 The private guide and minibus are at your disposal for the day. An early morning drive to Cruz del Condor is recommended in search of one of the world’s largest birds, the condor, which nests in the cliffs of one of the world’s deepest canyons (approx. 3,400m deep). Hopefully we will see the condors soaring in the thermals created by the deep gorge. From here we return to the lodge including several stops to visit local towns and make the most of the many beautiful photo opportunities on the way. After lunch we can either hike to the nearby pre-Inca ruins, explore the Yanque Museum or have a tour of the unique native culture and weavings in the area. You could also take advantage of the many activities available through the lodge, or make the most of the fantastic spa facilities. The hot rock massage is recommended. (BD) Day 4 Today we drive back to Arequipa. Depending on flight connections, there is time to enjoy a final dip in the hot springs before departure and a picnic lunch can be taken en route. The lovely conical mountain of ’El Misti’ welcomes us back to Arequipa and so straight to the airport in time for your connecting flight out. (BL)
