    Objective

    Conduct five (5) dynamic sled tests for evaluation of dog, vehicle harnesses.

    Test Methodology

    The testing for this series was conducted on the deceleration sled at the Kettering University Crash Safety

    Center. The test device used was the 75 lb Canine Test Device (CTD) supplied by the Center for Pet Safety

    (CPS). A standard Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213 child seat bench was utilized (Figure

    1). The attachment method included lap/shoulder belt attachment points (Figure 2). The tests were conducted

    utilizing the FMVSS213 standard frontal impact deceleration pulse corridor and a 30 mile per hour (mph) (48

    kilometers per hour (kph)) impact speed (Figure 3).

    A piece of standard seatbelt webbing with ample slack was attached to the CTD to contain it if the dog harness

    disengaged. The webbing was placed such that it would not interfere with the dynamics of the harness test.

    Test Matrix

    Five (5) test configurations were supplied by Canadian Broadcast Company (CBC) and listed in Table 1. Each

    test utilized CTD of 75 lbs. The CTD as well as all dog seatbelt/harness hardware (with installation

    instructions) was supplied by CBC.

    Instrumentation/Data Collection

    The fixture instrumentation included two (2) channels of acceleration on the deceleration sled.

    Photo and Video Setup

    Four (4) high speed color, off-board digital video cameras (1000 fps) were utilized. One camera was overhead,

    one camera recorded a frontal view, and two cameras recorded perpendicular to the bench seat.

    Still photos were taken of the overall fixture, CTD, and hardware set-up pre- and post-test.

    Results

    Appendices A through E contains the acceleration histories and still photographs for the five (5) tests. High-

    speed videos for these tests accompany this report. A summary of the test data is reported in Table 3 and

    observational comments in Table 4.

    01 During the test, there was harness hardware separation at the stitching between

    the harness assembly and the seat belt attachment tether.

    02 During the test, there was harness hardware separation at the plastic side clip.

    three point side attachment plate.

    There were multiple options for harness installment on the CTD. Option 5 was utilized. This attachment method is regarded as the safest, which provides the least range of motion, is to pass the shoulder and lap seatbelt sections through

    the twin harness loops before buckling the seat belt. Note this method does not

    use the tether.

    During the test, there was harness hardware separation at the webbing stitched attachment to the top padding material.

    There were two options for harness installment on the CTD. The Handle Looping attachment option was utilized. The seat belt tether may be used by looping the handle around the seat belt and passing back through its self.

    During the test, there was harness hardware separation at the stitching of the seat belt attachment handle.
