Pets bring Joy... to residents at

Autumn Leaves

Randall & Elizabeth Hacker with their dog, Brewtus. Mr. Hacker is an original Autumn Leaves resident.

FALL/SUMMER 2014-15

It was only a few years ago that Brent & Trisha Clark had never considered reading an ingredient list on a bag of dog food. Even if they had, they would not have known if it was good or bad. When their young Pug, Bonnie, began licking her paws and chewing her feet, they decided to go one simple step beyond the common practice of frequent shots at the vet. They did their homework and found there was a ton of information available; it just never occurred to them to look for it. What they ultimately discovered was that Bonnie had a severe allergy to grain. Grains like corn & wheat are in just about every brand of dog food at grocery stores and big box stores. With a little research they located a good food and in a couple of weeks all of Bonnie’s symptoms disappeared.

Brent and Trisha's experience inspired them to open A1 Pet Emporium at May & Britton Road in NW OKC and will be celebrating their fifth year in business in February 2015 now with two locations!

Brent & Trisha work closely with local Pet Rescues, and they have spent countless hours learning about pet nutrition. Their primary mission is to help consumers learn about good food choices for dogs and cats. None of their food brands contain any corn, wheat, by-products or artificial colors.

Some consumers have come to consider A1 Pet Emporium to be “Oklahoma’s Authority on Healthy Nutrition for Dogs and Cats”. They have an extensive selection of brands and types of foods that cannot be found at your local grocer. A1 is a specialty store, but that does not mean that they are expensive. They have high quality foods, treats and other items at very reasonable prices. They also offer a “Rewards Program” and free food samples.

If your furry friend is suffering from food related allergies, or even if it's just finicky, visit A1 Pet Emporium today!

People living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may lose many of their abilities. But they don’t lose their love of pets, says Marcie Davis, Director of Sales & Marketing for Autumn Leaves of Edmond.

Most residents aren’t able to care for their own pets, but family members are encouraged to bring them at any time.

“Our residents just light up when pets visit,” said Davis. “Seniors with memory impairment may need to give up some of their independence and some of the activities they once enjoyed. But they do keep their ability to enjoy their pets.”

One resident, Randall, is visited by his wife, Betsy, who brings the couple’s dog almost every day. Another resident, Margie, enjoys time with her dog Lonnie when her son comes for daily visits. The golden retriever takes time to greet each of the community’s residents.

Twice a month, Valir Hospice’s pet therapy team brings two dogs to visit, Troy and Ted. Ted’s service at senior communities recently earned a nomination for the Oklahoma Humane Society’s Hero Award.

Pets can improve quality of life for seniors. One recent study suggested that therapy animals help decrease the symptoms of aggression that affect some Alzheimer’s patients.

“Pets always put a smile on the residents’ faces,” said Jhameca Gildon, Autumn Leaves’ Life Engagement Manager. “The pets remind them of their childhood, or of pets they had earlier.”

“Our pet friendly and family oriented environment is one of the features that set our memory care community apart,” said Davis. “Family members of residents can come and go any time and bring grandkids and pets. That makes the community feel like home. As first-time visitors often say, ‘You can feel the love when you walk through the door.’”

The community also hosts a support group every third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. for anyone affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. A monthly “family night” gathering takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month. One upcoming family night will bring even more animals to the community, when one resident’s family will bring its menagerie of animals, including tortoises and hedgehogs, to meet the residents.

The next evolution in progressive therapy has arrived, and you have to see it to believe it.

Baptist Village Communities (BVC) opened the new, short-term, progressive rehab neighborhoods on the Baptist Village of Oklahoma City campus in July. “We are thrilled to help people recover from surgery and provide the rehab therapies and services they need to return home as quickly as possible,” declares Dr. Bill Pierce, BVC President. “People will enjoy living in this new environment designed specifically for them while they work hard on meeting the challenges of their rehab plan.”

“The thought of what great benefits people will receive from the progressive therapy services that will be offered brings me a great deal of excitement,” attests Wendell Short, Vice President of Planning and Project Management.

The Rehab Neighborhoods at Baptist Village of Oklahoma City contains four individual neighborhoods each with its own kitchen, dining room and living room – just like home. The physical design is also part of the service. The Neighborhoods’ unique, open layout promotes guest interaction with the employees; the “Friends Team.” Every Friends Team member

serves universally, from providing personal assistance to dining services.

Meals are available anytime, also reminiscent of home. Guests get up when they want to and are greeted with a made-to-order breakfast.

But perhaps the most unique feature in the new Rehab Neighborhoods is the HydroWorx® therapy pool. The therapy pool features a vertically moving floor, adjustable by remote control to varying depths of up to six feet. The vertically moving floor and removable support bars will allow our guests easy and safe access to the therapy pool. It also will contain an underwater treadmill with a video monitoring system that will provide feedback and recording capability. Therapy and resistance jets can be used for gentle to deep tissue massage.

Skilled nursing also will be available. “Skilled nursing is such a vital part of the ministry at Baptist Village,” insists Michelle Billings, Director of T.B. Lackey Health Center on the Oklahoma City campus. “Our current building was adapted to offer skilled nursing services, but the new Rehab Neighborhoods is intentionally designed for the ultimate rehab experience.”

“Our rehab guests will still benefit from Baptist Village’s Christ-centered mission and values, but they will also experience the finest in progressive wellness and therapy technologies to build functional life skills and bring them to their ultimate goal - home.”

In addition to the Rehab Neighborhoods, the Baptist Village of Oklahoma City campus is a BVC L.I.F.E. Network® community. We offer all service levels, including residential living, assistance in living, home health and personalized services, and memory support to name a few.

Baptist Village of Oklahoma City is a pet-friendly community! It is common to see residents strolling around campus with their beloved canine. It is therapeutic for many residents. Speaking of therapy, we also feature pet therapy services for residents to help improve social, emotional and cognitive functions.

BVC shapes the future of aging services every day throughout Oklahoma, and the Rehab Neighborhoods will serve to enhance more lives. Let us serve you today - call the Village at (405) 721-2466.

services for residents to help improve

functions.

What would you do to make your pet feel better? Most pet owners will do whatever is within their ability to bring their pet comfort and care. One innovative, new choice pet owners have is Class IV Laser Therapy. This low-level non-invasive treatment is proving to be a fantastic new pain management tool and healing therapy for pets. Laser Therapy treats conditions such as acute inflammation, chronic arthritis, joint pain, wound healing, and many more. It is an alternative to drugs and proving to be more effective than traditional treatments.

Family Pet Hospital is one of the few to have this new technology, and have been using it for about a year now. The veterinary clinic and animal hospital is run by Dr. Wendy Bray, who is a licensed, experienced Edmond veterinarian. Dr. Wendy Bray can say first-hand she has seen amazing results in her pet patients. Dr. Bray and her associates, Dr. Cooper and Dr. Casey, care for many patients at the Family Pet Hospital. The business moved into their current location upon completion of construction in 2005. The facility is equipped with an on-site lab, three exams rooms and is a fully-functioning pet hospital. It is also has a surgery suite, on-site radiology, boarding lodges and

they handle all routine needs like vaccines. However, the facility is far from the clinical atmosphere of most vet offices, instead it is warm and inviting geared to make patients and their owners feel at home. The first thing you see when you walk through the door is the counter with photo tiles of patients, current and past, to greet you.

Dr. Bray has practiced veterinary medicine for over 13 years and is a member of the OK Vet Med Association. In 2013, Dr. Bray was awarded the 2013 Companion Animal Practitioner of the Year Award in honor of outstanding contribution and service in veterinary medicine. If you are needing experienced care for your four-legged loved one, visit Dr. Bray and her associates. Or if you just have questions, call today. You can also visit their website to learn about Class IV Laser Therapy.

Handymen R’ Us (we do almost everything) can be your one source for all your handyman and remodeling needs. We’re starting our 22nd year in business and feel blessed and thankful for all of our wonderful customers.

Vic Vickers, Founder, pictured with his latest adopted girl, Penny, keeps up to date with continuing education (CE) training and has completed the courses for: • CAPS - Certified Aging in Place and • UD&B - Universal Design and Build offered by the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association of which Handymen R’ Us is a member

Visit our website www.handymanokc.com to read some of our testimonial letters from some of our valued customers. One testimony tells how one lady prayed that Handymen R’ Us would be able to build a ramp (when others couldn’t) for her husband coming home the very next day and how that prayer was answered.

Vic says that “people are living longer these days and want to stay in their own home as long as they can. We can adapt their homes to allow them to “AGE IN PLACE”.

One of the more common remodels that Handymen does is building a roll-in shower complete with bench seat. The shower floor is slightly below the Bathroom floor so that wheelchair access is easy and the individual can then transfer to the bench seat.

Handymen R’ Us can also install a stair chair lift to go from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor and for safety, you don’t have to transfer from one seat to another; you ride it all the way!

The 24-inch wide door leading to a lot of bathrooms will not allow a wheelchair to pass through, so Handymen R’ Us widens the doorway so that it will.

HosPets is Valir Hospice’s pet therapy program. This paw-warming program began in 2005 and continues to grow in popularity. Since its inception, Valir Hospice patients have received thousands of visits and tail wags from HosPets volunteers and their guardians, including trained therapy dogs and miniature horses.Well-behaved animals, of many breeds and sizes, that lend a calming presence are welcome to participate in HosPets. However, each dog must first successfully pass the Canine Good Citizen examination and the Therapy Dog International (TDI) test, which includes skills needed to interact with hospice patients such as maneuvering around walkers, staying at the bedside, and not jumping up. Additionally, the owner must also complete sixteen hours of Valir Hospice volunteer training.

Patients often benefit from pet therapy in these ways: • Experience a sense of comfort, warmth,

and normalcy. • Relax and release feelings of anxiety and

depression. • Focus on something other than their illness. • Respond to a living touch. • Feel motivated to complete tasks. • Perhaps most important of all, look forward
