Basic design
xGear is modular in construction, ensuring that any panel
combination and rating can be applied on a system. In addition, there is no limit to the number of panels that can be used in an installation, as several sections can easily beconnected together. Because the panels can be quickly assembled and connected, flexible commissioning of theswitchgear is an added benefit.

Fully segregated by earthedmetal partitions, with its ownpressure relief channel into thearc chamber, the compart mentprovides all the safety inter -locking mechanisms requiredfor safe and reliable operationof the vacuum circuit breaker.Manual operation buttons allowfor full operation of the vacuumcircuit breaker from the front ofthe switchgear with the doorfully closed. The circuit breakeris mechanically interlocked withthe compartment door so thatthe door cannot be openeduntil the circuit breaker isswitched Off and racked outinto the Test position.

The voltage transformers areavailable in 3 configurations:Fixed, Withdrawable withshutters, and Withdrawablewithout shutters. All options arefitted with withdrawable primaryfuses. The compartment doorcan be interlocked with theearth switch to ensure that thecables are safely earthed beforethe door is opened. The with -drawable option with shutterscan be disconnected from thesupply with the compartmentdoor closed and with cables stilllive. The door can then beopened to remove thetransformers safely.

The earth switch is operatedfrom the front of the switch -gear, with mechanical indicatorsto show the switch position. Awindow allows direct viewing ofthe earth switch position. Theearth switch is mechanicallyinter locked with the circuitbreaker or contactor truck suchthat it can only be closed whentruck is in the Test/Disconnectposition. The circuit earth switchcan be mechanically interlocked
with the cablecompartmentdoor as anadditionalsafetymeasure.

Internal Arc Classification (IAC) of AFLR
While the integrity of the equip -ment to provide continuity ofsupply was a major designconsideration throughout itsdevelopment, the safety of theoperator has also been one ofthe most important criteria, witha number of reassuring featuresbuilt in. Eaton has alwaysemphasised the need to designand create safe switchgear foroperators at all times.
One of the biggest potentialthreats to operators is aninternal arc in the switchgear. The metal-clad design and therobust construction has enabledxGear to success fully passinternal arcing test in accor -dance with IEC 62271-200 in
all three primary compart mentsand provides an IAC rating of 25 kA up to 31.5 kA for 1 second at 17.5 kV and 25 kAfor 1 second at 24 kV.
IEC62271-200 defines the levelof protection to be provided inthe event of an internal arc faultbeing generated within theswitchgear. xGear has beenproven by independent third-party test to provide an IACClassification of IAC = AFLR.A = Protection for personnelF = Protection at the Front of
the switchgearL = Protection at the Lateral
(sides) of the switchgearR = Protection at the Rear of
the switchgear
Proven experience and knowledge gained by Eaton
over many years in the areas of cast-resin technology,
vacuum technology, arc interruption and electrical
field control have been integrated in the design and
development of xGear - ensuring that the switchgear
is safe and has high operational reliability throughout
its lifetime.
IEC62271-200 describes theextent to which the switchgearand control gear are allowed toremain operational in caseaccess to a main compartmentis necessary.
xGear has the highestattainable level of Loss ofService Continuity of LSC2B.
In addition to the IAC and theLSC classifications, IEC62271-200 defines the type ofpartitions required betweeneach panel and between eachfunctional unit within the panel.
xGear employs only earthedmetal partitions and thereforehas the highest level ofpartition classification of PM.

Sustainable and Flexible in Design
xGear is designed to
be environmentally
friendly throughout the
life-cycle: from production,
during service and at the
end-of-life.
One of Eaton's key strategicinitiatives is to provide environ -mentally friendly products. Thisrequires examination of thetotal life-cycle, from design todecommissioning.
The product life-cycle can bedivided into five main blocks. These blocks are
• The design
• Materials used
• The assembly
• The operational phase
• The decommissioning
Eaton's production plants actentirely in accordance with therules and procedures of the ISO 14001 environmentalcertificate during developmentand production processes.

Flexibility in design
Every application of this
type of system is unique,
xGear offers a wide range
of different panel types
and field versions.
If, in due course, additionalcapacity in the form of morepanels is required, the systemcan easily be extended to theright or left with only minimaldisruption to the supply forfinal connection of the busbars.
Customers often have theirown requirements with respectto the use of protection andcontrol components withinswitchgear, so the need forspecific components was takeninto account during productdevelopment and resulted in abasic primary design thatenables customers to integratesecondary protection andcontrol components accordingto their own specificationrequirements.
Range of voltagetransformers
All xGear panels can be fitted with cast-resin insulatedvoltage transformers, of therequested transformer ratioand class, for voltagemeasurement on the cableside, or on the busbar side.
The standard configuration isfor a fixed voltage transformerwith withdrawable fuses -although an option for truck
mounted withdrawable voltagetransformers is also available.
Range of currenttransformers
In order to provide protectionand metering, the cast-resininsulated current transformersare housed in the fixed sectionnear the feeder cable terminals. All common transformer ratios, outputs, rated currents andclasses are possible.
Smart Grids and substationautomation
Equipment for remotecommunication betweenpanels or automation systemscan also be installed in the lowvoltage compartment, makingthe system the perfect solutionfor current and future SmartGrid applications.
Protection and controlequipment
The protection and controlequipment is located in acompletely separate lowvoltage compartment with itsown access door. There isspace on the door for a mimicdiagram and for mountingequipment such as protectionrelays, voltage detectionsystems, meters, etc.
In case additional space isrequired, the low voltagecompartment can be extended.
10
The xGear product range
is very flexible and has a
variety of circuit options
that enable almost all
types of application to
be configured.
The truck design is common for all panel types enabling thereconfiguration of the panelwhile in service.
Flexibility is provided by theEquipped Riser Panel option. In this configuration a With -drawable Voltage Transformertruck can be fitted into theEquipped Riser, offering optionsfor busbar voltage transformer
for measurement/ metering and or control voltage.
A wide range of additionaloptions are also available formounting within the mainprimary compartments. The lowvoltage control and protectioncompartment also offers manyoptions for control, protectionand indication.
