Automation Treasure! Expo, Power Conference,ISA Training, Standards Meetings in Las Vegas
I would like to begin by saying Thank You to all the Orange County members for supporting thelocal Orange County Section and myself over the last two years. I have been fortunate to be the ISA
Orange County Section President from 2008 thru 2010.I began my term in 2008 while our economy and industry were strong and prosperous, and our
local ISA Orange County section was following a string of superb leaders. This made my first year(2008-2009) a breeze, with an excellent board and a section running on autopilot. My second term(2009-2010) faced the turmoil of our economic depression and harsh influences upon our industry.Although a few invaluable veteran board members had left at the end of the 2009 term, an influx ofnew invigorated board members and returning board members formed an enthusiastic and devotedboard. As many know, we were able to organize the first ISA Orange County Section Tabletop show

(Automation OC) in manyyears with the help of BisMitra and John Prince. In myopinion Automation OC was agreat success and an eventwhich will continue to groweach year.
Looking back over thelast two years I hope youwould agree the board hasdone an amazing job. With aresume of impressive events
and educational opportunities, I cannot help but beproud of what teamwork has accomplished. FredMcEachen (Program Chair), and Mike Parvizi(Program Co-Chair) made one of the most difficulttasks on the board look easy. Theyplanned events and speakers for months in advanceand information was broadcast to members withmonthly e-mail “Gentle reminders” thanks to SergeiSeleznev (Publicity Chair) and Bob Harrison’s(Webmaster) up-to-date website. Bis Mitra’s(Arrangements Chair) broad network supplied ourmeetings with three to four sponsors on average,
allowing us to enjoy delicious appetizers, and helpedfund the section. In addition, the meticulous eye ofour Treasurer, Rafael Agrazsanchez, ensured thesection stayed on track financially and in accordancewith insurance and tax regulations.
There were many more individuals on the boardthat made this last year fruitful, and although roughtimes slowed our economy our section set a positivepace and I am sure Jesus Moncayo (your incomingPresident) will do an incredible job of continuing thegrowth. I would like to sincerely thank the entireboard for all their help, insight, and dedication forthe past couple years. I leave my role as Presidentwith many new experiences and friends, whichwould not have been available without the privilegeto assume this role.
As a final remark, don’t forget to attend thefinal meeting of this fiscal year on PerimeterMicrowave Security Systems in our Irvine locationJune 9, 2010. Thank you.

ISA Long Beach Staterobotics team competesby Walter Martinez, Cal State Long Beach Advisor
The Cal State Long Beach Student Committeewill be competing in the Robotics Society of SouthernCalifornia competition at California State UniversityFullerton on Saturday, Aug 14 beginning at 1pm.
The team developed their own circuit board anddrivers for each of the sensors for a GPS-guidedvehicle project which had all the hardware in place asof early May and was nearing completion. All thatwas left to do was the difficult task of fusing all these
sensors in a smart algorithm that will allow the vehicle to know itsinitial coordinates position and navigate to is final destination withoutbumping into obstacles. Photo on page 11.
After this project we will investigate creating an electric bicycleas an alternative fuel vehicle with our focus being on its electroniccontrols, possibly converting it to a hybrid later on.
The CSULB Committee has grown significantly this year. As ofMay 12, eighteen new Long Beach State students had joined ISA thisyear, and twelve more had submitted applications.
Walter Martinez is Lead Information Systems Analyst atCalifornia State University, Long Beach, and can be reached at thePhysical Planning & Facilities Management office at (562) 985-5669or [email protected].

GFC300 can be ordered as a single, two independent or a dual flow computer. It canvery accurately measure volume, compensated volume and mass of liquids and gases.Or volume and mass of steam, saturated or superheated, in a very large ranges ofpressures and temperatures. GFC300 calculates density and compressibility factors witha very high accuracy.
Each channel has one flow input that accepts pulses with 24VDC / 20 mA power forthe pulse sensor and 4-20 mA loop power flow signal.
30 points linearization for each pulse input can significantly improve the flow metersperformances. Flow meter calibration tables can be entered there.
Each channel has one 4-20 mA loop power input for temperature or density and onefor pressure with a typical error of 0.01% full scale for each.
The isolated analog output of each channel can be ordered as 4-20 mA loop power,0-5V or 0-10V. It can be programmed to represent rate, rate A+B, pressure ortemperature.
The isolated pulse output of each channel is sinking open drain 100V / 100 mA andcan represent total, total A–B or total A+B, producing pulses of frequencies up to 10kHz.
Each channel has also one relay for 250VAC / 5 A with programmable hysteresis forrate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature
Both flow rates are seven digit, totals are eight digit. There are separate units for flowrate and total for each channel. Many volume and mass units are listed in specialmenus. Flow rate and total for each channel have independent programmable decimalplaces. GFC300 has many preset liquids, gases and temperature transmitters whichsimplifies its programming.
Power can be ordered as 85-250 VAC, or 12VDC or 24 VDC, all with high isolation, surge, reverse polarity, under-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection. GFC300has a bright transmissive color graphic display with a white back-light and easy to usescroll drop list menus. Fully compliant, programmable RS485, 1/8 load, MODBUS RTUfor baud rates up to 115 200 makes GFC300 highly network-able. Multilevel menus, thefirst of which can be locked make programming easy, simple and protected.
Size is DIN 72 x144 mm panel mount, weight is 0.45 kg (1.0 lb).All software options can be enabled on the field with passwords.

Automation Treasure!™ Expo - Friday, June 11Measuring BTU/Energy Usage Using Non-Invasive Flow & Temperature Sensors
This presentation will present the use ofprecision ultrasonic flow and thermal energymeters for the district energy industry. Theability to accurately and reliably measure theflow rates of liquids and gas from outside thepipe (non-intrusively) has long been the hopeof process engineers, and the promise ofultrasonic technology. Recent advances inclamp-on ultrasonic flow metering have madethis a practical and affordable reality for theDistrict Energy industry. Today’s mostadvanced Transit-Time flow meters are veryaccurate, highly versatile over a wide
application range (extremely large turn-down),exhibit excellent stability (even in small pipeand elevated temperature applications) andhave the ability to operate reliably in the mostdifficult “real world” (limited straight run ofpiping and high levels of aeration)environments. Their use is increasing at arapid rate in the industry as a result of therecent advances in technology which haveresulted in dramatic improvements inperformance, ease of use/installation and longterm reliability.
