IdahoShakespeare Festi-val haswon this category forsevenyears running, andwhynot? The summertheater companyoffers oneof themost dynamic experi-ences in the region, produc-ingworld-class theater byWilliamShakespeare andothers, musicals andwackycomedies in its park-likeamphitheater nestled in theBoise Foothills.
Actors, directors, design-ers andother theater artistsconverge onBoise eachsummer, andyear after yearcreate interesting, oftencontemporary twists onclassical plays performed inrepertory.During the heightof the summer, you can seethree different plays in thecourse of aweek.
Under producing artisticdirectorCharlie Fee, thecompanyhas developed abroad, accessible theatrical style thatfits its glorious outdoor setting.
And they’ve taken it on the road tosister companies:Great LakesTheater inCleveland and theLakeTahoeShakespeare Festival in InclineVillage,Nev.Theproductions travelbetween these three venues, keepingthe companyworkingnearly year-round.
But theBoise experience is stillsomething special. Youbring a picnicandwine or buy it atCafe Shake-
speare and enjoy a stellar night oftheater under the stars.

Three years in a row? That’s a trend. It looks like theTreasureValley’s art-house theater is officially king of themoviemountain around these parts.
There’s nodoubt that formerwinnerEdwardsCinemas’multiple locations dowaaaaaaaaymore business than thehumble Flicks. And, yes, the stadiumseating, 3Dglasses and ear-splittingsoundyou find atmainstreammegaplexes is nice.
ButTheFlicks has history. And char-acter. And four auditoriumswith a fond-ness for independent, foreign and artfilms.Oh, andbeer. Beer!Didwemen-tion the beer?
The food anddrink atTheFlicks issomewhat of anunderratedphenome-non.Next timeyouwant to dodinnerand amovie, do it all atTheFlicks. Kickback on the entirely non-smokingpatioandorder somegrub fromRick’sCafeAmericain, which offers salads, burgers, desserts andmore.Heck, youmaynotwant to get up to go into the theater.Eitherway, you’ll understandwhyTheFlicks keeps comingout on top.

Howoftendo arenarockers play 999-capacityclubs?Not often. Butwhentheydo, it’s at theKnit. (Ifthat sounded likeTheMostInterestingMan in theWorld ads, it’s becausewethinkwe sawhim in theVIP room.)
ANYHOO,KidRockperformed at theKnittingFactoryConcertHouse lastDecember.Thatwas huge. And it sumsup the allure ofthisDowntownBoise hotspot, which is thelive-music destinationaroundhere.
Whoelse played theKnit in the past year or so?Skrillex. (Nowarenamas-sive.) Social Distortion.(Sold out in advance.) Infact, if you think of any touring band (OK,with the excep-tion of theEStreet Band), there’s a good chance it hasplayed at theKnit. Theplace booksmusic genres runningthe gamut fromcountry toDJmusic to rock to, like, Scan-dinaviandeathmetal.
Still, wewon’t lie. TheKnit had to eke out this victory. After all, it’s an indoor venue.Nothing beats seeingmusicoutdoors. That’swhy the IdahoBotanicalGarden finisheda very, very, very close secondplace, thanks to itsOutlawField summer concert series (which, by theway, isproducedbyKnitting FactoryEntertainment).

BESTRADIOHOSTS
WhyareMikeandKate perenni-al contenders forthis category? It’ssimple— they’refun and loveinteractingwiththe community.
In his song“WOLD,”HarryChapin sangabout a sunriseDJwith “the brightgood-morningvoicewho’s heardbut never seen.”This dynamic duo is just theopposite of that. You can’tmiss themplaying allthe hits from5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.weekdays orseeing themout and about.
Sure, you canhear “OPP” or “WillieWaffleMovieReview”only throughyour radio, but theyvisit andparticipate inmany events around thearea anduse socialmedia to keep in touchwiththeir listeners.
Kate frequently updates an entertaining blogon theMix 106website andmakes book sugges-tions everymonth, and as the temperature out-side climbs, she continues her crusade againstshort-shorts that are oneor two sizes too small:“... The only attention thesemini-shorts are get-ting you is the head turns frompeople saying,‘Oh,mygosh. She shouldn’t bewearing that!’”

Although the line to geta table is sometimes long, the experience is definitelyworth it. There are plentyof timeswhenyou canwalk right in andbe seated.

Whydo local craftbeer nuts loveBitter-creekAlehouse aboveall other beer bars? Is itbecause the 39 taps al-ways have the best se-lection in town—andabeermenudividedinto no-nonsense stylecategories like Session,Bright,Hoppy,Malt,Roast andFunky? Is itbecauseBittercreek’sdevotion to localmeans having the bestbrew Idahohas tooffer but stillmaintainsthe flex to bring in bar-ley-malt treats fromOregon,WashingtonandCalifornia, with oneunique beer alwayson cask? The ability to get a growler filled? Is it the ultra-relaxedbuturban vibe? The local foodmenu? The see-and-be-seen factor? The excellent patio?
Theold-school credof the tavern itself?
Yes.To all of theabove. Simply put, there is nobetterplace inBoise todrink a craft beer.

There are fiveLosBetos locationsthroughout theTreasureValley, all open24hours aday. The food is the same in thedayandatnight, but it seems to tastebet-ter aftermidnight. It doesn’t getmuchbet-ter thanhaving aburrito, a sideof Spanishrice and refriedbeans and somerefresh-inghorchata. LosBetosdoeshave theop-tion todrive through, but that overlooksone important aspect—the salsabar.
There are plenty of combomeals at LosBetos, like two shreddedbeef burritoswith beans and rice on the side, andmanymore a la carte items to choose from.Nomatterwhat youorder, the foodwill leavea grownhuman full for twodays. If youcan’t inhale all of it, there are plenty ofto-go boxes to save for lunch thenext day.

For the third consecutive year, FiveGuysBurgers andFries has takenhome the titleof best burger.
Why? It could bemany reasons.Let’s startwith the fact that the hamburg-
er patties aremade from 100percent beefand cooked to “juicywell done.”There areno freezers in the restaurant—nothing isever frozen.
Maybe it’s the 15 different toppings, allavailable at no additional cost, whichmeansthere aremore than 225,000ways to order aburger.
Burgers comewith twopatties, unlessyou specify “little,”whichmeans you get asingle patty.
This national chain nowhasmore than1,000 locations in 47 states and sixCanadianprovinces.
Onenote: FiveGuys does use peanut oilin its fryers for french fries, but allergy suf-ferers should feel safe in ordering a burger. The grill is kept away from the fryer. Cookswill pack the burger in a separate bag if youlet themknowabout your allergy.

WestsideDrive-In’s finger steaks tastegreat by themselves, but the atmosphereadds evenmore flavor to the order.
Whether you stay in your car or grab atable on the patio, it’s easy to forget aboutthe present as the finger steaks are beingprepared.Neon signage and thedrive-in’scolor schemeof turquoise, white and cot-ton-candypink fool themind into thinkingthat a cherry-red convertiblewithwhite-walled tireswill pull into a space any sec-ond. “Remember the happydays,” it says onthemenu.

What doyouhave to be getting right to bethe top vote-getter—by awidemargin—again in this category?
Everything.WhenBardenayownerKevin Settles
opened this location in 2004, he pulled off asweet trick.Whenyou’re relaxing on its ex-pansive deck, it’s easy to forget that you’re inthemiddle of a busy commercial district. The soundof the river rushing bymight bethe loudest thing you’ll hear.
“Somanypatios seem tobe in noisyplaces,” Settles says. “Andhere, you’re notsucking up car fumes.”
The expansive drink and foodmenus alsoare big draws.Andwhile it’s trendy to thinklocal, here you candrink local, too.The ginismade at theEagleBardenay, the rumcomes from theBardenay inDowntownBoise and the vodka is produced at theBardenay inCoeur d’Alene.
The attentive staff play a key role in theBardenaypatio experience, too, fromadjust-ing umbrellas for just the right amount of
shade to hooking youupwith sunscreen.“You canhave the best spot in theworld,
but if youdon’t havedecent service, you’renot going to reap the benefits,” Settles says.

BESTPIZZA
If there is such athing as a lock in theBest ofTreasureVal-ley readers poll, it hasto be FlyingPie takingthe crown for the bestpizza in town.
FlyingPie justkeepswinning everyyear—and there’sbeen a lot of newcom-petition lately, whichFlyingPie bats awaylike a pizza versionofFloydMayweather Jr.
Artisan thin-crust pies?New-fangled “extreme” pizzas?Whatever. FlyingPie’s “whirled famous” pizza rolls overthe competition like amassive foil ball namedFlora.
Why is this?Maybe it’s the consistencyof being local before localwas
cool. (FlyingPie turned 34 this year.)It could be the “It’sYourDay” specials— if your name
goes upon themarquee andyou are quick enough to signup (sessions are 2 to 4p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m., and they’re firstcome, first served), you get tomake your own 10-inchpie.
Themost likely answer is you always get an excellenthomegrownpie, whether it’s a simple pepperoni pizza or acomplexmelange of flavors like thePestoPrimavera.

BEST BIKE SHOP
Seven may be lucky when you’re rollingthe dice, but when George’s Cycles & Fit-ness tops this category seven straight years,it’s a whole lot more than luck.
Credit an all-around bike shop (three, actually) that carries everything from akid’s first bike to an Olympic-class racer.
If you prefer to exercise indoors withinsight of a TV, George’s has that covered, too.But cycling is its claim to fame. For morethan 40 years, George’s has been sellingbikes, accessories, repairs and tune-ups, aswell as sponsoring local cycling events.
And lest you think George’s only spon-sors bike events for the peloton crowd, check out its wine rides on July 8 andSept. 23. Both will be 30-mile rides on sce-nic rural roads and include stops at localwineries.
If you’re looking for your first bike or 15th,George’s can help you out with its large se-lection. If you’re looking to upgrade yourexisting bike, the stores have shiny newparts to keep it running smoothly.

BEST BOOKSTORE
There aren’t many places in the TreasureValley where you can sit down for a cup ofcoffee with John Steinbeck, Miley Cyrus,Michael Corleone, Cosmo Kramer andMaya Angelou.
Barnes and Noble is one.Books, magazines, movies, TV shows,
music and other media are available fornearly every interest, all situated around acoffee shop with food and drinks.
The store also hosts discussions with au-thors and artists, book clubs, game nightsand children’s readings, so it is much morethan a collection of books. The social aspectgives customers a place to meet friendswhile maintaining the choice of diving nose-first into a story.
Whether you have a specific title in mindor you’re just looking for something that
catches the eye, it’s easy to lose track of timewandering the aisles, inspecting the insideof book jackets, listening to music samples, reading a chapter or judging books by theircovers. When it is finally time to leave, usu-ally with a padded wish list, the same vowwill pop into numerous heads: “I really needto read more.”

The upscale resale boutique buysfrom more than 6,000 Southwest Idahowomen, adding more than 1,000 piecesa week to satisfy fashionistas on thehunt for a deal.
The store may have won shoppers’hearts with its shrinking prices. Itemsare full price for 40 days, then half-off for aweek, starting Tuesdays. If they don’t sell, they move to a $3 rack for a week. Prices arethen slashed to $1 on Mondays.
A once-a-season $3 inventory clearance is“one of our biggest attractions,” says ownerAmy La Jocies.
The store’s artful displays include basicssuch as leather clutches and classic heels, and statement pieces such as beaded pursesand colorful cowgirl boots.
Consigners get 40 percent of the sellingprice. If something doesn’t sell, it becomesAgain Consignment’s property and can bedonated to the Idaho Youth Ranch, giving ita second chance at being sold secondhand.

Garnette Edwards tookover EdwardsGreenhouse30 years ago fromher father, who received it fromhisfather, the founder.
“Youdo it because you love it,working the sameground as your father andyour grandfather,” she says.“In an environmentwhere things don’t seem to last,we’veworked really hard to get this to last.”
Nowa fourth generation—Edwards’ daughter ErinMonnie— is transitioning into leadership to carry onthe 82-year-old legacy. Edwards says shewill continue toworkbut relinquish responsibilities asMonnie takesthemon.
Afterweathering the recession, Edwards says, businessexploded this seasonas customers returned togardening.
Amajor changeEdwards has seen in the past 30 yearsis the explosion in plant varieties.
Edwards’ perennial varieties numberedup to about30 then, but now they range from3,000 to 5,000, she says.
And “organic gardeningwas something that just asmall facet of the public did, but nowa sustainable, or-ganic gardenhas becomeawayof life,” Edwards says.

Itmakes youwonder if voting for this cat-egory happenedbefore this year’s race, whichwas rununder ridiculously hot tem-peratures and sun thatwiltedmost of the2,400 competitors.
Thedon’t-know-what-to-expect-weatheris just one of themanyvariables thatmakesthis 35-year-old race oneof the “bucket list”items for people in theTreasureValley.
The annual half-marathon takes place onthe third Saturday ofApril, meaning youcould get temperatures from the 30s to the80s, depending on the year. Most runnersandwalkerswould prefer dry, coolweatheras they tacklewhat is billed as “the toughesthalf-marathon in theNorthwest.”
Whatmakes it tough is a grueling, steadyclimb fromFort Boise Park, upReserveStreet, to ShawMountainRoad toRockyCanyonRoad. The latter is a dirt road thatwinds up a canyon and eventually crossestheAldape Summit, some4,797 feet abovesea level.
Thewaydown is just as difficult. Thesteepportions are a test to the quads and
toes of all participants, who can’twait forthe finish andparty atRobieCreekPark.
In addition to being tough to endure, it’seven tougher to get registered. This year, therace numbers sold out in less than 10min-utes. The race is for a good cause— localcharities receivedmore than $50,000 fromtheRace toRobieCreek.

From its opening as the IdahoTerritorialPenitentiary in 1872 to its closing as an activeprison in 1973, no onewanted to benear theOld IdahoPenitentiary. Now it’s an extreme-ly interesting place to check out.
Inside thewalls is a foreignworld.Thecrampedquarterswhere inmates lived ineach cell house tweaks your perception ofreality. It fees like the higher the security, thedarker the cells—especially in dismal soli-tary confinement knownas “Siberia,”whereonly slivers of light enter.
All the concrete andmetal bars in eachhouse enclose visitors in a cold, strange feel-ing.The gates separating the house entrancefrom the cells force you to lower your headas youpass through the threshold, almostdemanding a humbled, sullen state ofmindevenbefore seeing prisoners’ quarters. Eachcell is unique, flavoredby the souls once en-closed inside.Ondeath row, a calendar nev-
er appeared so ominous. You can almosthear the inmate in Siberia snickerwhenhewrote, “Iwas here, and youwere gone.Nowyou are here, and I amgone!”
