INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AND OPINION Phannacist consultations can improve patients'health If patients taking prescription medications, especially high-risk* drugs, consult with their pharmacist when getting prescriptions filled, they are less likely to be hospitalised for an urgent or emergency event. This was the main finding of a US study conducted jointly by the Kaiser Permanente (KP) Medical Care Program and the University of Southern California (USC). The KPIUSC Patient Consultation Study compared 2 models of pharmacy care with a control model in > 6000 patients. In the 'State model', which reflects current Californian legal requirements, pharmacists were required to counsel all patients presenting with new prescriptions. In the 'KP model', pharmacists counselled and monitored all recipients of high-risk drugs on an ongoing basis. Both models reduced hospital use and improved patient satisfaction with pharmacy services, compared with the control model. Moreover, patients were willing to wait for a consultation.
