Kingdom of Tonga Philatelic Bureau

In 1923, a War Memorial commemorating the men from Tonga who had served in the Great War was erected at Pangai Si i, in Nuku`alofa. The names were collected by the Returned Servicemens Association of Tonga. Not all the men from Tonga were included, only those whose names had been submitted to the organizing committee. Queen Salote unveiled the Memorial on Armistice Day 1923. It has now had names from later wars engraved upon it, and is used every Anzac Day as the centre of commemoration in Nuku`alofa.

This issue marks the second summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), which is aimed at increasing relations between several Pacific Island nations and India. (The design for this issue incorporated prominent animal species of India, along with depicting Mahatma Gandhi as an important historical aspect of the country’s his-tory.) Both the national flower of the Kingdom of Tonga and India are also shown.

These stamps commemo-rate the 75th and 100th Anniversaries of WWII and WWI, respectively. The WWI issue depicts the War Memorial that stands at Pangai Si`i, in Nuku`alofa (Tonga). During times of Governmental disrupt Tonga Post had relied on previous issue surplus for overprinting and revaluing. Recently Tonga Post had discovered that a small quantity of these issues remained unused and they are now being offered. There are incredibly low quantities of these that were found at Tonga Post, quantities are as low as ten on some items. Please note that these issues were held at Tonga Post for many years and do show some imperfections as expected with tropical air (all items are unused).
