NATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

“Education in Malaysia is an on- going effort towards further developing the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner, so as to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonic, based on a firm belief in and devotion to God.

Such an effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable and competent, who possess high moral standards and who are responsible and capable of achieving a high level of personal well- being as well as being able to contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation at large.”

IMPLICATIONS

Education is an on- going

effort

Education is a process of acquiring and transferring of knowledge, skills and noble values.

The acquisition and transfer processes are on- going starting from an early age till death.

Early education is important in order to shape the personality of young children from the age of one to six years.

Upon completion of schooling, the individual continues to enhance his knowledge, skills and character;

Continuous education will assist the individual to adapt to various type of changes.

Development of individual potential

Every individual has been blessed by God with hidden talents, potentials, and abilities.

Talents, potentials and abilities will surface through social interaction with others and the environment.

Education should offer the individual opportunities to develop his talents, potentials and abilities.

Holistic and integrated

development of the individual

Talents, potentials and abilities does not develop separately; on the contrary, they are inter- related and coordinated so as not to compete with one another.

Enhancement and development should preferably encompass four aspects, namely intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical.

Balanced and harmonic being

Balance of the four aspects will produce an individual who can live in harmony with himself and others.

Resilience to face all of life’s challenges and problems.

Intellectual element

• Possesses the three basic skills (3R); Reading, writing and arithmetic.

• Always strives to acquire and develop true knowledge;

• Possess creative, critical and reflective thinking skills.• Willing to share knowledge with others and the

environment.

Spiritual element

• Be aware of and believe in God;• Thankful of God’s gift• Possesses good character and upholds moral values.

Emotional element• Matured and stable emotions• Possesses and nurtures love• A feeling of togetherness ( espirit de corps) and unity.

Physical element

• Be aware of the importance of good health• Develop technical, manipulative and social talents

and skills.• Uses physical fitness skills for the benefit of society.

Belief in and obedience to God

• Admit the existence of God and accept Him as the Creator of mankind and the universe

• Be aware that God determines nature’s laws and phenomena.

• Be aware that every individual is fully responsible for his deeds and actions

• Practice all the teachings of the faith professed.

Knowledgeable Malaysian citizens

• Love for knowledge• Strive to foster knowledge and reading culture• Broad and open- minded

Competent Malaysian citizens

• Possess expertise and competencies• Able to execute tasks effectively and efficiently• Far- sighted and has initiative• Foster good dispositions.

Strive for economic progress based on the country’s predetermined policies;

Always maintain nation’s political stability and peace,

1 ) The FPK spells out the aspirations of the government regarding the education system.

- Outlines the educational goals clearly

-The education fraternity ensures the FPK is met

- A constant guide and reference in education sector

2) The education fraternity needs to play an active role in ensuring the realization of FPK.

- Be open-minded to the rapid changes in ICT

- Be ready for new knowledge and skills in classroom teaching-and-learning

- Be courageous and willing enough to implement the innovations

3) All educators should aware that their tasks and responsibilities are not limited only to knowledge and skills delivery.

- Give full attention to the formation of human capital.

- Young generation will develop holistically.

• In today's global economy, a nation's success depends fundamentally on the knowledge, skills and competencies of its people.

• Government has allocated RM38.7 billion to Ministry of Education (MoE) for operating and development expenditure.

• So, National Philosophy of Education plays crucial roles in order to shape our future generation and development of the country.

- To move Malaysian forward to become an advanced, united and just society with high standards of living for all.

Achieving vision 2020 for Malaysia to become a fully developed nation.

The main goals of Vision 2020 is to modernize and develop our country based on its own model and develop that nation economically, politically, socially, spiritually, psychologically and culturally [Somun 148].

To foster the capability of Malaysian in contribution to the nation.

Through proper education and training, people can use their productivity and innovation skills to upgrade the country’s productivities .

Here it does not limited to industrial sector but other as well such as service sector that involves professionals like doctors, lawyers and etc.

Service sector : activities where people offer their knowledge and time to improve productivity, performance, potential, and sustainability

3) To produce global citizen from educational circles

- Acknowledge of their responsibilities both to the country development and to the world development itself

- having the desire and ability to work actively

- value the Earth as precious and unique, and safeguarding the future for those coming after us

CONCLUSION

Education is indisputably the most effective way to shape values, attitudes, behaviors and skills that will equip the people of Malaysia. It will facilitate integration of knowledge based on the holistic approach. By adhering to the FPK, the citizen will be able to contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation at large.
